The heart of the whole system of the Clock is acomplex set of gears placed inside a big cross-shaped metallic structure located in the middleof the Tower. The system is composed by five dif-

San Zaccaria, situated a few steps from St. Mark’s square, is one of the most outstandingchurches of Venice. When it was founded back in the IX century, the Emperor of theEast is said to have donated the relics of the saint, father of Giovanni Battista, to the cityfor his body to be buried in the church dedicated to him. A legend has it that Salvatoreappeared to the bishop of Oderzo surrounded by supernatural clouds and he asked foreight churches to be erected. During the vision not only did he affirm which churcheshad to be erected but also the place were they were to stand. The church of SanZaccaria is characterised by various styles of decorations dating back to the IX andXVIII centuries and it preserves some of the most ancient pieces of art of the city, likethe mosaic pavement dating back to the IX century, at around 50 metres of depth, andthe suggestive crypt (X c.) with low cross vaults held up by plain small columns reflec-ted on the water which often invades them. It also contains the marvellous“Conversazione” by Giovanni Bellini placed in the fifteenth century altar in a perfect fic-titious perspective and the frescos by Andrea del Castagno (dating back to 1442), rareexample of Tuscan art in Venice.

Quality is a goal to be achieved day by day. In 100 years of activity, the passion forcuisine, the attention to detail, the affection for customers have guided three gene-rations of the Rossi family in the fond running of the ristorante “Al Brindisi”. Froman “osteria” specialized in wines from the Puglia region (with its ancient name“Osteria al Brindisi”) to a restaurant offering a rethought Venetian cuisine. The tworooms of the restaurant are characterized by a welcoming and suggestive atmosphe-re with works of art by contemporary artists on its walls and an elegant forecourtlooking onto Campo San Geremia. The Chef Bruno Bagnolo reinterprets in aninnovative way the great traditional cuisine that has its roots in the recipes of theSerenissima of the “cicheti” and creates dishes that follow the course of seasons andexalt the original quality of the ingredients. The canteen, with its tradition, is alsorenewed and constantly expanded in order to acquire the finest wines of Italy.

The major ambition for all Venetian fishers, amateurs andexperts, has always been the catch of a fine sea-bass exem-plar. The reasons underlying this hope are various: starting
from the high commercial value of this fish – exception made forthe “valley” species – whose exquisite flesh is characterized by itshigh density, whiteness and savour. Being the sea-bass availableall year round, at dusk, fishers equipped with fishing lines can beseen from the Venice lagoon to the Lido seashores awaiting inmeditative silence the marvellous prey. As for all high value spe-cies, the past thirty years have seen an increase in the number ofsea-bass valley farms. There are two types of farms: “on theground” using large containment fish-ponds and “in the sea” withlarge delimitation cages. The best method is the latter one sincethe fish lives as if it were in its natural habitat. The farm sea-bassdiffers from the wild one in the colour: darker on the back and bri-ghter on the sides. No need to mention the complete difference inthe taste and density of the exemplars caught in their natural habi-tat. Certain Venetian restaurants, in constant contact with expertfishers, do still offer the latter type of sea-bass.
