How It Works The Veeam Backup & Replication Plug-in relies on the native LabTech architecture. The plug-in allows you to include the following endpoints in the LabTech management scope:

Veeam backup servers: physical or virtual machines running Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager

VMware and Hyper-V VMs protected with Veeam Backup & Replication Veeam backup servers and protected VMs are monitored with the help of LabTech agents. Each agent collects information from the hosting machine and communicates it to the LabTech server. The Veeam Backup & Replication Plug-in on the LabTech server translates collected data into the dashboards, dataviews, reports, alerts and tickets.

Backup Data Collection The Veeam Backup & Replication Plug-in uses a specialized Backup - Veeam Backup servers search to discover agent-enabled machines that run Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager. Discovered backup servers are automatically included in the Veeam Backup group.

By default, the following Veeam Backup & Replication Plug-in objects are assigned to the Veeam Backup group:

Scheduled PowerShell script Collect backup data A set of Veeam monitors

The Collect backup data script gathers configuration data from Veeam backup servers. This data includes backup infrastructure inventory details, information about configured jobs and job sessions. Additionally, the Collect backup data script gathers connection state details from the Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager server.

Data from backup servers is collected via WMI, archived and sent to the LabTech server. On the LabTech server, data is unpacked and stored on the LabTech database. The Veeam Backup & Replication Plug-in uses the collected configuration data for:

Dashboards, dataviews and reports Monitors that can trigger alerts and create tickets

Virtual Infrastructure Data Collection To discover VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V VMs, the Veeam Backup & Replication Plug-in uses LabTech agents deployed inside these machines. Information collected from VMs is compared to information collected from backup servers to detect protected and unprotected machines within the managed virtual environment.

APPENDIX B. AUTOMATIC LICENSE UPDATE You can instruct Veeam Backup & Replication to automatically update the license installed on the backup server or Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager server. With the automatic update option enabled, Veeam Backup & Replication proactively communicates with the Veeam licensing server to obtain and install a new license before the current license expires. Automatic license update removes the need to download and install the license manually each time when you purchase the license extension.

Requirements and Limitations for Automatic License Update 1. Automatic license update is available in all editions of Veeam Backup & Replication operating

in the full functionality mode.

2. Only licenses with Support ID can be updated automatically.

3. Automatic license update is not supported for licenses with merged Support IDs.

If you manage backup servers with Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager, all license management tasks are performed via Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager. Automatic update settings in Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager override automatic update settings configured in Veeam Backup & Replication.

For example, if the automatic update option is enabled in Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager but disabled in Veeam Backup & Replication, automatic update will be performed anyway. For more information, see Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager User Guide.

How License Auto-Update Works

To update installed licenses automatically, Veeam Backup & Replication performs the following actions:

1. After you enable automatic license update, Veeam Backup & Replication starts sending requests to the Veeam license server on the web and checks if a new license key is available.

2. Requests are sent once a week. Communication with the portal is performed over the HTTPS protocol.

3. Seven days before the expiration date of the current license, Veeam Backup & Replication starts sending requests once a day.

4. When a new license key becomes available on the Veeam license server, Veeam Backup & Replication automatically downloads it and installs it on the backup server or Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager server.

Automatic Update Retries If Veeam Backup & Replication fails to update the license, it displays a notification in the session report and sends an email notification to users specified in the global email settings (if global email settings are configured on the backup server). You can resolve the issue, while Veeam Backup & Replication will keep retrying to update the license.

Veeam Backup & Replication retries to update the license key in the following way:

If a connection to the Veeam license management portal cannot be established, retry takes place every 60 min.

If a connection can be established but you are receiving the 'General license key generation error has occurred' message, the retry takes place every 24 hours.

The retry period ends in one month after the expiration date of the current license. The retry period is calculated as the number of days in the month of license expiration. For example, if the license expires in January, the retry period will be 31 day; if the license expires in April, the retry period will be 30 days.

If the retry period is over but the new license has not been installed, the automatic update feature is automatically disabled.

For more information about error cases, see Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager User Guide.

Grace Period Veeam Backup & Replication provides a grace period after the license expiration date. The duration of the grace period depends on the type of license:

Veeam Backup & Replication 7 and 8: 14 days

Veeam Backup & Replication 9: 30 days for subscription license, and 2 months for rental license

Trial and NFR licenses do not have a grace period.

During the grace period, you can perform all types of data protection and disaster recovery operations. However, the license status in the License Information window will appear as Expired (<number> days of grace period remaining). Veeam Backup & Replication will also display a warning message 'License key has expired, <number> days of grace period remaining' in properties of jobs that are available only in the paid version of Veeam Backup & Replication, for example: backup job, replication job, VM copy job and so on.

If you do not install a new license by the end of the grace period, Veeam Backup & Replication will automatically switch to the free functionality mode.
