Mrs Bell Andrew to introduce staff and hand over to the Nursery Teacher Miss Dooley to talk about the EYFS Curriculum.4What is the Early Years Foundation Stage?

It is based on the recognition that children learn best through play and active learning. 5So, What is the Early Years Foundation Stage? Otherwise known as the EYFS.

It is the national stage of education for children from early as birth to the end of the Reception year and it describes how your child is kept safe and cared for.

Importantly, it is based on the recognition that children develop and learn best through play and active learning.

The EYFS has 4 key principles of practice to ensure that your child receives the best education and support possible.

They are that every child is unique and individual

That children develop based on a their own relationships with adults. So it is important to develop positive and secure relationships with adults at school like those loving relationships they have at home with you.

The third principle is that we as practitioners need to provide an enabling environment full of opportunities for children to explore, interact and learn.

And importantly we need to think about learning and development . Remembering that all children develop and learn in different ways, and at different rates. 6Areas of LearningPrime AreasPersonal, Social and Emotional DevelopmentPhysical DevelopmentCommunication and LanguageSpecific AreasLiteracyMathematicsUnderstanding the WorldExpressive Arts and DesignThe EYFS has 7 areas of learning. They are broken into 2 sections.

The first being the Prime Areas of Learning. These are Personal Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Communication and Language.

The second being the Specific Areas of Learning. These include Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

All 7 areas are important and interconnected. For example to develop in Literacy your child FIRST needs to be able to have the listening and attention skills to hear a story being read, they would need to FIRST have the confidence and language to talk about what happened in the story and they would need to develop the physical skills to FIRST hold books correctly and to begin to use tools for mark making.

The 3 Prime areas of learning are in RED because they are essential to your childs development throughout their school careers. The understanding of the EYFS curriculum is that in order for your child to be able to learn effectively in the Specific areas of learning they must be capable in the 3 Prime areas first. Although all 7 are important, the prime areas are the MOST important at this stage of your childs development.7What will your child be learning about in each Area of Learning? Each area of learning is broken down into different aspects. So I will now go through each area in full and give you some examples of what your child will be learning about!8Personal, Social and Emotional DevelopmentSelf-Confidence and Self-AwarenessManaging Feelings and BehaviourMaking Relationships

Personal, Social and Emotional Development is broken down into 3 aspects.

Self-confidence and self awareness, Managing feelings and behaviour and Making relationships.

This area of learning is really important for your child when they start Nursery and go through that big transition from where they are now to new surroundings, new routines, new adults and of course lots of new children.

So in this area your child will be learning about becomingself confident,

how to make friends,

Developing those important social skills like sharing and taking turns,

Learning about how to express their feelings and understand the feelings of others.

And also becoming aware of rules and telling the difference between right and wrong.

9Physical DevelopmentMoving and HandlingHealth and Self-Care

Physical Development is broken down into 2 aspects. Moving and Handling and Health and Self-care.

In this area your child will be learning about what their own needs are,

going to the toilet independently, washing hands, dry themselves when they are wet from play

how to dress and undress by themselves.

They will be learning to move more confidently

Developing and strengthening muscles in their hands to learn how to use one-handed tools and equipment like scissors, tweezers and pencils.10Communication and LanguageListening and AttentionUnderstandingSpeaking

11Communication and Language is broken down into 3 aspects. Listening and Attention, Understanding and Speaking.

In this area of learning your child will be learning to:

To Initiate communication and talk to others.

Listen and join in with stories

Understand and follow simple instructions

To understand prepositions such as under next to behind

To speak in sentences to link thoughts

To learn new words and vocabulary, beginning to ask questions!LiteracyReadingWriting

12Literacy is broken down into 2 aspects. Reading and Writing.

Your child will be learning to:

Join in rhyming and rhythmic activities such as action rhymes and early phonics activities to do with sounds and listening to the sounds around us.

To develop an interest in books, pictures and words around them.

Our school HOME READING booklets will be introduced in January and this is where your child will be select a book to take home each week to share and talk about with you

As I touched upon earlier it is really important that before writing your child is ready to write and that they have develop those fine motor skills to use one handed writing tools like crayons and chalk.

At this stage of development we will be helping your child to develop in EMERGENT WRITING which is about mark making for a purpose and being able to ascribe meaning to their marks.

For example to be able to about a picture which may look like two circles to us but to your child it might be 2 pizzas which they are making for tea in the home corner, one with sweetcorn and one with chocolate for pudding! MathematicsNumbersShape, Space and Measure

Maths is broken down into 2 aspects. Numbers and Shape, Space and Measure.

Your child will be learning to

Develop an understanding of counting from stories, songs, games and imaginative play

To become comfortable with numbers and concepts such as bigger shorter and heavier lightest

To sort objects into groups

Explore shapes and patterns

13Understanding the WorldPeople and CommunitiesThe WorldTechnology

Understanding the World is broken down into 3 aspects. People and Communities, The World and Technology.

In this area your child will :

Celebrate some different festivals to become aware of different ways of life, cultures and beliefs

Have opportunities to talk about past events and what is happening now in their lives and their families lives.

Explore and find out about the world around them

Learn about technology from CD players, to the computer!

14Expressive Arts and DesignExploring and Using Media and MaterialsBeing Imaginative

Finally, Expressive Arts and Design has 2 aspects. Exploring and Using Media and Materials, and Being Imaginative.

This is about your childs own response to the world around them through art, craft, role play, dance and music.

Your child will be learning to:

Explore a wide range of media

Explore and respond to music and musical instruments

Play imaginatively in the role play area acting out their own stories based on the world around them.

15Characteristics of Effective LearningPlaying and Exploring - Having a go!

Active Learning- Being motivated to achieve!

Creating and Thinking Critically- Problem solving! The EYFS Curriculum believes that the best approach to learning is through these 3 characteristics.

So we are thinking about what your child is learning about but also thinking about HOW they are learning about it.

Playing and Exploring about Engagement

- Wanting them to having a go, playing with things they know but also trying things that are new!

2) Active learning about Motivation

to keep trying even when difficult and enjoying finishing what they set out to do!

3) Creating and Thinking Critically about thinking

- Having their own ideas, and beginning to solve problems!

So in Nursery when observing your child we will use how they learn to provide specific play opportunities to help them progress through these characteristics.

16Parent Partnership

Education is a partnership between school and home17We strongly believe that Education is a partnership between school and home.

Every child is unique and you know your child best!

Please do share things with us!

Tell us if you had a special event in the family, share pictures and let us know about any special days out. If there are changes in routines like moving house or having new family members over to stay do tell us so we can help your child manage their feelings and support them.

But also please share your childs interests our planning is based on the childrens interests and their play so any information is really useful! So if since visiting Butterfly World your child is constantly looking out for minibeasts, let us know and we can add activities and opportunities using butterflies and ladybirds in the maths area or put out books about Butterflies in the book corner!

It is through their interests that we can motivate children to play and learn!
