We thought you would find it useful to have information about some of the work that your child will be
doing in Nursery this term. Your child may have already covered some of these outcomes at their
previous settings, however it is very important to us to establish a clear starting point which we will
use to adequately plan provision that your child needs for their ongoing development.
The context for learning this term will be ‘Getting to Know Each Other’. Please see the Nursery
external door each week for further curriculum information and key reminders.
PERSONAL, SOCIAL
& EMOTIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
We will be learning to:
separate from our families and come into nursery independently;
play alongside others and form relationships;
independently explore the new learning environment;
seek support or guidance from adults and others around us; and
learn about our rules, routines and expectations in Nursery.
PHYSICAL
DEVELOPMENT
We will be learning to:
use a range of equipment to develop gross motor skills such as, kicking a
large ball or using jugs to pour;
using the outdoor space to practice balancing and climbing;
hold mark making equipment so we can begin to write our name;
become independent with our self-care (eg: toileting independently, helping
with dressing).
COMMUNICATION &
LANGUAGE
We will be learning to:
listen to and join in with various stories and rhymes;
recognise and respond to familiar sounds;
use language to share our thoughts, feelings and experiences.

In Reception we do not follow specific topics; we find out what the interests of the children are and
arrange our curriculum around those interests. For example, space, pirates, superheroes, etc. We
understand that every child is a unique child and therefore, our learning intentions match the needs of
the children; the activities to meet those learning intentions match the interests.

Weekly reading and books to share with your child.
After Half Term your child will receive phonics cards, spellings, numbers 1 to 20 and a reading book.

How you can help your child at home
Please help your child to learn how to put on and fasten their own coat.
Please encourage your child to get dressed and undressed independently. This will prepare them for
getting changed independently, after half-term, for P.E.
Please talk about rules that you may have and why they are important.
It would be great if you could encourage your children to talk in conversation. For example, noticing
things on the way to school, discussing stories and events, listening and describing sounds.
Please ensure that library books and shared reading books are in book bags every day. (Reading Logs
and Books will be sent home after half-term.)
Read and enjoy a wide range of books – visit the library.
Visit places of local interest e.g. the park, museums and shops.
Please make sure that ALL your child’s clothing is named.
Coats and water bottles should be sent in everyday!
