CASHBOXTHE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC/COIN MACHINE/HOME ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
COVER STORY
Luther VandrossThere are certain artists that become standard bearers; people
whose style transcends mere entertainment, mere striving to maintain
a career. Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Otis Redding; this is
the level at which Luther Vandross resides. His music has created a
sound, an emotional connection to his audience that is indeed rare. His
multi-platinum successes with landmark records starting with Glow Of
Love to Never Too Much through last year’s Give Me A Reason haveall contained that spark, that thing that we cynical types in this industryare still suckers for - magic.
The magic is back again. Luther Vandross’ new single “Any Love”from his new album of the same name is indeed a stunning achieve-ment; his silky vocals are laced with tears and joy, his performance has
that understated power that signifies musical genius. Included in the
album are sensational new upbeat tracks like “She Won't Talk To Me,”“Come Back,” and “I Wonder.” To support the record, Vandross will beembarking this fall on a tour called “The Heat.” His co-star will be the
fabulous Anita Baker. What a show!
We congratulate Epic and Luther Vandross on the new single and theAny Love album.

to BMG's expansion, by joining CliveDavis and the Arista family at aperiod of increased commitment toR&B and unprecedented dominanceof crossover artists."

LONE SONGSTRESS - Rumors arecirculating that Lone Justice havedisbanded and that lead vocalist Maria
McKee is embarking on a solo career.(Photo by Brian Chalmers)
SPLIT DECISION - A flyer adver-tising upcoming shows at L.A.'sMcCabe's Guitar Shop included an up-
coming solo performance by Maria
McKee on September 23 - in the listing,McKee was referred to as "Geffenrecording artist and former lead singer
of the critically acclaimed group Lone
Justice.” The key word here is"former”... Sources at (McKee'smanager) Jimmy Iovine's office tell usthat there is a likelihood that the next
album will be a solo outing for McKee,
yet will most likely feature appearan-
ces from select members of the most
recent incarnation of the band.
SO YOU WANNA SEE A ROCK N'ROLL STAR? - Some suggestions:Billy Preston at Trancas on 9/16; Jules
Shear's Reckless Sleepers at the Club
Lingerie on 9/16-17; Marti Jones &Friends (!!!) at the Palace on September
18 - (the "friends" in question will in-
clude Don Dixon, John Hiatt, RichardBarone and Janis Ian); Red Kross and
Phranc at the John Anson Ford Theatre
on 9/23; Firehose at Scream on 9/24;
Stiff Little Fingers at the Variety Arts
Center on 9/25; Ziggy Marley AndThe Melody Makers at the Universal
Amphitheatre on 9/27; Fishbone at the
John Anson Ford Theatre on 9/30; Billy
Bragg and Michelle Shocked at the
Wiltem on 10/1; and Dave Alvin &The Allnighters at the Music Machine
on 10/1.
HIGH BIAS - The Balancing Act'supcoming Curtains LP is one of themost refreshing albums we've heard all
year - we predict this album to becomesomewhat of a sleeper hit that will
firmly establish this band nationwide.
Given the proper exposure, the first
single "Can You Get To That," could
create a major buzz at radio. Stay
tuned...
THIS MAN WILL BLOW YOURMIND - Ben Vaughn is back, and thename of his newly issued Restless Recordsrelease is Ben Vaughn Blows YourMind. Listen for yourself and decide...
(Note: Both the compact disc and cassette
configurations will feature bonus tracks)
THE SECRET IZ OUT -A couple ofour "on the field" reporters caught lo-
cals The Secret during the band's sold-
out set at the Sunset Strip's Whiskey AGo-Go last week and were sufficiently
impressed. We have been told that thegroup is currently gamering quite a bit
of major label interest, and local radio
station KLOS-FM is reportedly playingthe band's new independent EP Iz Out.
The Secret will perform at The Roxy on
October 1
.
Until next week...
Tom De SaviaLos Angeles
BONEDADDYS - Long hypedas innovative, genre busting,
and generally brilliant. Fish-
bone have never quite been
the melt-down throw-down ska-rock
genii they were supposed to be. Their
concept - a black band that rocked,
rolled, reggae-ed, and funked with no
regard for industry or societal precon-
ceptions of what was 'black' music and
what wasn't - and their concerts were
always better than their records, where
(at least to these ears) they've always
sounded a little too much like thePolice. Until now.
Their new Columbia LP, Truth AndSoul, is a big step forward, a pop, rock,
and funk triumph. That's to say they
make it sound like there's nothing theycan't do and do well. They come onwith the stylistic diversity and general
musical smarts of Prince and the in-yo-
face aggressive power of PublicEnemy. The guitars roar, the skarhythms and JB guitars are show noneof the previous new-wave affectation,
and the general party-out-of-bounds
fervor (check out "Bonin' In The
Boneyard") has the convulsive in-
clusiveness of George Clinton's best
jams. Not to mention an admirable
political perspective that makesFishbone's a conscious party. Howabout that? A band that's grown togreatness and a record label that's sup-
ported their effort to do so for the last
three years. Not bad.
So what now? AOR radio stationsshould play the crunching, hard-rock-
ing remake of Curtis Mayfield's"Freddy's Dead" (they won't, but they
should), and lord knows if the likes of
Billy Joel or Huey Lewis came up withhook happy ska-pop songs like "MaAnd Pa" and "Mighty Long Way"they'd be all over Cl IR ("Ma And Pa,"tho igh it has a tough lyric about the
dissolution of family life, really doesn't
sound all that different from Joel's
"Second Wind," which had a not-so-
tough lyric about teen suicide). And themoody, slow, guitar drone of "One
Day" is perfect for DOR outlets. It'd besoul affirming if this release got the at-
tention it deserved.
COLD LAMPIN' WITH STEVIE -Flavor Flav (l) and Chuck D (r) of PublicEnemy are pictured with Stevie Wonder
after joining Wonder onstage during his
sold-out Radio City Music Hall stand to
rock the house with their single "Don't
Believe The Hype."

Storybook Iceland:Home of Lava,Sugarcubes
By Cap'n Joe Williams
Nation: Iceland.
Capitol: Reykjavik.
Location: North Atlantic ocean -
the middle of nowhere.Exports: Lava, lava cakes, lava
jelly, lava cola, Sugarcubes.
History and Culture: Iceland's his-tory is as long as the shadows thatstretch across its fields of volcanic
ash. A one-time truck-stop for Vikingmarauders and long a possession of
Denmark, picturesque Iceland wasgranted its independence in 1944.
Today Iceland is noteworthy for itshigh literacy rate, its high incidence
of alcoholism (in Iceland, it is con-
sidered rude to leave a bottle un-
finished), its female president and itsexciting music scene.
Icelandic culture is heavily in-
fluenced by European thought -
links with Scandinavia are stillstrong, and because of its location be-tween North America and Europe,Iceland is a melting pot of Western
ideas - but of equal significance inIcelandic life is the native belief in
magic. An isolated, barren land,Iceland inspires an otherworldy con-
sciousness in its people. Runic anddruid beliefs are strong, intermixed
with modernism to produce acosmpolitan eccentricity, a wry andmystical spirit. That spirit is best ex-
emplified by the music of the Sugar-cubes.
Native Sounds: The Icelandicmusical underground, as docu-mented on the recent Enig-ma/Gramm compilation Geyser, is ahybrid of Nordic chanting, Eurosynth-pop, American roots musicand elements of performance art. Al-though the tiny island nation canboast several dozen provocativebands, none has achieved the widerrecognition of the Sugarcubes. TheSugarcubes (or "Sykurmolar" asthey are known in Icelandic)emerged from the anonymity of theReykjavik scene in 1987 with"Birthday," a single on the Britishindie Ten Little Indians label. Thesoaring, neo-psychedelic tune wasavailable in both an Icelandic and
English version and quickly shot tothe top of the English indie charts.
The single was followed by twoothers, "ColdSweat" and "Deus,"the latter entering the Britishmainstream charts as well. With the
release of Life's Too Good, their Elektra
debut album, the Sugarcubes'reputation has become as solid as theglaciers that surround theirstorybook homeland. The album is
SYKURMOLAR ('THE SUGARCUBES")
number one on American collegeradio charts and a solid performer onthe Cash Box Top 100.
The Sugarcubes sound is charac-terized by jittery arrangements thatborrow from rockabilly, punk andavant-garde rock, augmented bykeyboards, horns and the sweeping,wide-eyed vocal style of Bjork Gud-mundsdottir. Her lyrics are slightlyskewed and overtly sexual, and theywork well with friend EinarBeneditksson's spoken-word wit-ticisms. The Sugarcubes aren't afraidto tackle themes of life and death, theexistence of God, the primacy ofsexual experience, and they aren'tafraid to express their ideas with anirreverent twist. In "Deus" they dis-avow the reality of God,, then sug-gest that if he does exist, they wouldsay "Hi" and take a bath with him."Motor Crash" recounts a bloody caraccident from an near-comicperspective. Unblinking, theycelebrate both good and evil asnatural forces, as natural as the
winds that sweep across the fjords.
Although the Sugarcubes album isperformed in English, the bandrefuses to yield its Icelandic identity.
When, last year, they were courted in
Reykjavikby representatives of a halfdozen record companies, the bandperformed a showcase gig full ofyelping, Icelandic tunes that sent the
executives scurrying for the airport.
Their deal with Elektra Recordsguarantees their complete artisticfreedom, and they have vowed toremain in fairy-tale Reykjavik ratherthan move to a more accesible,media-wise city. Typical of the band,
their recent American tour wascharacterized by Einar's constantbadgering of the public, and at onepoint in their itinerary they abruptly
cancelled all subsequent publicitysessions. But rather thantroublemakers, the Sugarcubes areplayfully fierce individualists. Theyhave started their own record label.Bad Taste Records, to support Icelan-dic bands of their choosing. The firsttwo signings were the Lovebabiesand the Pink Bastards. Next in theirscheme for ultimate world conquestis the formation of the Bad Tastepolitical party, which will spread theSugarcubes doctrine to every cornerof the globe.
Weather Cold, like the hearts ofthose who would turn away from theSugarcubes and their message oflove.

GREEK THEATRE, LOS AN-GELES - Bruce Hornsby piaying liveas a headliner is truly caught be-
tween a rock and a hard place. Onone hand he's got a wealth of power-ful, subtle songs that are an originalAmerican synthesis of rock, jazz andcountry. On the other hand, because1
of a sound that leans on his some-times miraculous piano playing, there is a sonic washout that occS*:^at a large outdoor venue like theGreek. The songs all sounded thesame, even though they are substa^tially different in emotional effefct
when heard on record.
The static nature of the show\
further exacerbated by Hornsby hinr|
self, who is an incredibly affablechap, but is by necessity chained tohis piano. Keyboard oriented per^formers like Elton John and Billy Toelare masterful at varying their jxisi-
tion on stage around a variety ofkeyboards, they are more hyperac-tive on stage. Their music demandsit. Hornsby is a different animai.’lrwas a relief when he stood up to playthe accordion, especially visually. There's no way to get around it,pay your money to see a show, andunless there's some kind of sonic hidvisual contrast, you get bored.
There were some beautiful mo-ments, including his rendition of hissong covered by Huey Lew,\s"Jacob's Ladder." A few sparks wefegenerated on a smoking jam thatpreceded "The Way It Is," Hornsby'sbiggest hit. Here Hornsby displayeda virtuosity that has heart and pow cr,an ability to turn a musical phrasethat rivals some of the strongestrock/jazz players ever. The Range
f
did the best they could to play h^rd
without stepping on the complexitiesof Hornsby piano jamming. Espe^Lri-ly outstanding was lead guitaristGeorge Marinelli, whose roughhewn sound bridged the gap be-tween the musical murals of rockfjazz and country.
There's no doubt that Hornsbyought to perform live, but he oughtto select smaller venues, and plavmore shows. If he does play a largerhall, be sure to sit in the first ten row's;close your eyes and enjoy. Anythingelse is a compromise. *

we,Vixen: The Girls Are Back
In TownBy Brad Buchsbaum
LOS ANGELES - Ill-tempered,u r^ewish and malicious are just a few
;
of the words the dictionary uses to' describe a vixen. This may hold trueslai&the world of Shakespeare, but inT d*e world of rock 'n' roll, the four
*we>Snen who are collectively knownas Vixen may be better defined as
jfsSj^ehted, experienced and shrewd, but definitely not shrewish.
' Jan Kuehnemund was given an' acoustic guitar when she was still ayoung girl, but she quickly traded it
i in JLr an electric model. By the time
lshe was in junior high, she had al-ready assembled her first rock band,
rJ
which consisted primarily of7 sMldhood friends. Jan kept updating
rthe band and it eventually developed
^ into what is now called Vixen.I2.i
. ^According to vocalist JanetGardner, "Jan started the band in
. ML nesota, and she moved that band“ to Los Angeles. It was then that I metWY and joined the band about five
m years ago. We saw Roxy [Petrucci]fl playing drums with Madame X andiv asked her to come check us out. Weshagged Roxy, and then Jan saw
ftSh^re [Pedersen, bassist] play. Share
sb\just happened to call Jan the day after
l^yrbass player left."
oi,,
Singer Janet was, at one time, a
^ cohort of Nia Peeples in the traveling„j.( vocal group The Young Americansjjplqjid claims that she was the un-,^di£puted "rocker" of the group. "If
jxjlthey needed to add a little meat to the^tua^e they gave it to me," Janetjurcoasted. 'It was great because I got,
ollito travel to just about everywhere in
iplthe world."
(flB*Bassist Share Pedersen attended
The Berklee College of Music in Bos-ton, where she tackled the elements
jmioLonusic theory and concentrated ondik^faying jazz. The majority of her
i pfrlends told her that if she wanted toilaim.tke it in the music business, shenroftvould have to pack her belongings
lyth'land head out to California. By coin-rid ence. Share gave Jan a ring the dayaft ar Vixen's original bassist left the
5and.
'At the time I thought I wanted to)e a session player, so I moved to Los
Angeles, where I eventually gothooked up with Helen Reddy," sharesaid with a chuckle. "I just did a tonof hired gigs. After two years of play-ing music that I didn't really care for,I gave Jan a call. I had met her earlier, and was just interested in seeingVixen play. The rest is history. Itworked out great because I wasdying to be in a band. And boy, thiswas the right band. I feel lucky tohave found it."
Janet and Share both have playedin various jazz bands over the yearsand both agree that the jazz audien-ces they were playing for were toostuffy for their likes. Janet said she
felt like yelling, "Let's get a little
rowdy here. Come on loosen up."Share confided that when she com-
pares the time when she began play-ing jazz, which was at 1 7 years old, tothe person she is now, she sees a hugechange in her personality. "When Iwas 1 7 1 acted like I was 40, and whenI joined Vixen it was like I was 13again. The rocker side of my per-sonality definitely kept emerging."
Drummer Roxy Petrucci, whorounds out the band, is a study incontrasts. Born and raised in Detroit, she is a conservatory trainedclarinetist, who played drums as ahobby. Roxy played clarinet with thesymphony during the day, and everynight she'd change into her leather, tease up her hair, and play drums ina rock band. Roxy migrated to L.A.,and had some success with the glam-rock band Madame X before teamingup with Vixen. On their self-titled debut LP, Vixen
proves that women can rock and rockhard. Produced by the creme de lacreme of rock producers - David Cole(Bob Seger, Richard Marx), RickNeigher (Tonio K.), and SpencerProffer (Quiet Riot, Heart) - Vixenfeatures ten songs, including thedebut single, "Edge Of A BrokenHeart," which was co-written byrock sensation Richard Marx and theTubes' Fee Waybill.
The guys better beware becausethe girls are back in town.
Big MouthBy Joe Levy
NEW YORK - "The idea behind itis we're here having fun and you'reinvited to our party." That's B.S. (Bob
Sullivan), the lead mouth of metal-coated rap group Big Mouth, on whatthe band is all about. Fun. "We'rehaving fun. Are you capable ofhaving fun? If you want to have fun, come to the party listen to the album, get into it. If not, hey. I'm sorry 1
bothered you. Go listen to somethingelse that makes you have fun. Be-cause that's the name of the game."
For Big Mouth the fun startedabout two years ago, when B.S. raninto guitarist Johnny Milian in the
elevator of a building in New YorkCity that rented out practice rooms tomusicians. At the time B.S. was work-ing in a duo, doing rap versions of
cover songs with a beatbox, drummachine and a guitarist. Johnny, bas-
sist Victor Murgatroyd, and drum-mer Kevin Hupp were playing in ametal band, Rockaway. Rapper B.S.
and rocker Johnny Milian got to talk-ing, and Big Mouth was born.
According to B.S. and Johnny, the
raw, guitar heavy metal-rap you hearon their Atlantic debut. Quite NotRight, is the very same music theycame up with two years ago. Before, might they add, Run-DMC's cover of"Walk This Way" and the BeastieBoys's Licensed To III went skyrocket-ing to the top of the charts. Rap isn'tpart of a get rich quick scheme forthese guys. In some sense, it's part oftheir heritage - like the cartoons,Honeymooners episodes, and 70'smetal bands that were part of their
youth (and also influences on their
music). "I grew up in the Bronx, andrap was everywhere," explainsMilian. "I remember when I was 12years old Grandmaster Hash was inthe park. I'd go into the park to climb
the monkey bars and there would beguys jamming out and all that stuff. Ithought it was pretty cool.""On the other hand," says B.S. "I
never heard of it [rap] until Blondie
did 'Rapture.' I was watchingtelevision, and late at night, which is
when I'd watch TV - I'd stay up allnight long and watch TV, there's notmuch else you can do in New Jersey- and you see Blondie come on. Andtwo weeks later you see a program:'Blondie's song rapture comes fromstreet music from back in '72.' Andthen they did in depth interviewswith street rappers, and that's how Igot interested in it. A whole otherform of music, before Run-DMC evercame out with 'Rock Box.' "
Big Mouth takes rap 'n' roll in ahard rock direction (they even in-
clude a cover of Bachman TurnerOverdrive's "Takin' Care OfBusiness"). Their music is loud, young, brash, aggressive anddefinitely comic. "My main influen-ces are Fred Flintstone, Ralph Cram-den, and Va-Voom," says B.S. "Eversee that guy Va-Voom? He blew thesemountains apart on some old cartoonshow. I don't remember the show. But I also gotta say Kiss, Led Zep-pelin. What's in my record collec-tion? I got Ramones in there. I wasnot into any deep stuff. I was alwaysinto, 'Oh, wow, "Jack U Off" byPrince? I like that!' Up stuff. I like upsongs. I think our album is an upalbum."
Racous and up, sure, but politicaltoo. 'The album, it's really to tellpeople to have a big mouth," saysMilian. "Speak out when you don'tthink something's right." So the lead
off track, "You Need I.D.," is kinda acall for a youth revolution in thestreets to lower the drinking age?
Kinda. And, explains B.S., "
'Foodfight' is like, don't throwbombs - give food to other nationsand help the benevolence of societyas a whole."
"Everyone wants to tell me what todo," concludes B.S., eyes sparkling,
voice rising to Fred Flintstone decibel
level. "Since I was five. That's whatthe whole album is about. People tell-ing us what to do. When we finallyget the freedom, we're gonna takethis label by storm. Then theWORLD."

BOY MEETS GIRL - Reel Life - RCA (8414-1-R) - Producers: A. Marden, G.Merrill
They wrote "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" for Whitney Houston, and
|rBtnow they debut as performers with a powerful package of dance tunes anduptempo pop. Definitely at the front of the pack, this deserves to be heard,
i], loudly.
KARYN WHITE - Karyn White - Warner Bros. (9 25637-1) - Variousproducers
With the fingerprints of L.A. and Babyface all over it, this looks hitbound.it helps that Karyn White is photgenicand possessed of a strong, breathy vocalstyle.
MARLEY MARL - In Control, Volume 1 - Cold Chillin'/Warner Bros. (925783-1) - Producer: M. MarlMore like a compilation than a solo album, this record gathers several of
the wholesome, positive Cold Chillin' performers under produccr/mixerMarley Marl's umbrella.RHYME SYNDICATE - Cornin' Through - Warner Bros. (9 25774-1) -Various producers
A rap compilation from the lce-T/ Afrika Islam family of fine products, thisone features some deliriously def - dare we say dope? - rhymin,' with Marl'sstate-of-art production.
IAN GILLAN, ROGER GLOVER - Accidentally On Purpose - Virgin (790953-1) - Producers: I. Gillan, R. GloverTwo alumni of Deep Purple, Gillan and Glover offer a few surprises on this
fun new album - very little metal, a bouquet of blues, a Little Richard coverand a Carribean flavored winner called "She Took My Breath Away."JULIA FORDHAM - Julia Fordham - Virgin (7 90955-1 ) - Producers: B. Pad-ley, G. Mitchell, J. FordhamA remarkable voice and a formidable new talent, Julia Fordham mixes tex-
tured ballads, spritely dance material, lounge jazz and insightful lyrics on this
new album. The single is the political/percussive "Happy Ever After."MATT BIANCO - Indigo - Atlantic (7 81878-1) - Producers: M. Reilly, M.Fisher
Matt Bianco doesn't exist, but the band that bears the name is a long, cooltropical cocktail of dance pop, sprinkled with horns and a liberal dose of fun.

SNAKEBITE - David Coverdale’sWhitesnake - United Artists UA-LA915-H - Producers: MartinBirch and Roger Glover- List: 7.98
Snakebite is a compilation of two
LPs of Coverdale’s which were pre-viously only available as imports.
This is a great package of hot tracks
not unlike Sweet’s Desolation Blvd.
in regards to the “best of” feeling
generated. Initial AOR response isvery favorable toward this "solo” of-
fering by the last (but not the least) of
Deep Purple’s lead singers. The self-penned excitement of “Come On,”“Steal Away,” and "Breakdown”make Coverdale and band strongAOR and live concert contenders.
LIVE AND MORE - Donna Summer- Casablanca NBLP 7119 -Producers: Giorgio Moroder andPeter Bellottee - List: 12.98
Mostly recorded live during her
recent engagement at the UniversalAmphitheatre in Hollywood, this two-
record set is a well designed pack-
age which serves both as a finegreatest hits collection and as an
entertaining document of Summer’sonstage presentation. Highlighted by
such hits as “I Feel Love,” “Last
Dance” and "Love To Love YouBaby,” this LP also includes the 17-
minute “MacArthur Park Suite,”which was recorded in the studio, from which the single “MacArthur
Park” is taken.
The CountryColumn
If anyone out of Nashville is gettingmore press coverage these daysthan Warner Bros.’ Carlene Carter, itwould be interesting to know who itis. Carlene, in the short space of amonth or two, has graced the pagesof People magazine, Rolling Stone,
Time, Newsweek, Country MusicMagazine and assorted other musicpublications. People are making abig fuss because she is a country girlout of music city who has recorded apop album. Fact is, this is happeningmore and more around here. Carleneis on the road most of the time now,but she was seen last week workingon some demos at Combine’s“Rathole" studio.
It had to happen sometime. In themail this week comes a printout ofPlayboy’s October cover with Dolly
Parton on the front dressed in amodified bunny outfit. The Octoberissue will feature a full-length, no-
holds barred interview with RCA’scountry lass.

Lynda Carter“I see no conflict in combining
music and acting careers,” saidLynda Carter, whose angelic altovoice is featured on “Portrait,” her
Epic Records debut. “Years ago,Ginger Rogers sang, acted, anddanced. Doris Day did that too. Andlook at John Travolta! He’s the per-
fect example of a contemporary per-
former that’s doing it all - albums,
i T
movies and a television series. Nowit’s the time for a contemporarywoman to do the same.”
Carter, who plays the title roletW'the television series “WonderWoman,” is already branching outinto other areas of show business. ATage 25, the former Miss World U.S.A.wants it all - to excel as an actress,a recording star, a nightclub per-
former and a songwriter. She t6d*her first step in that direction during
July when she made her Las Vegasnightclub debut at Caesar’s Palace.
“ ‘Wonder Woman’ has been reahly good to me,” she explained as s6eprepared to tape an episode for theprogram’s fall series. “Because-nfthe visibility the show has given me,I’m able to sing as honestly as I canwithout having to worry about im-pressing someone. As restricted a$the character or the show mightseem, it’s really given me the oppor-tunity to get into something I lo^dearly.”
