MIP Radio, one of the newest sec-tions of Bernard Chevry's annualMidem music industry marketplace, is also the fastest growing, according to the final attendancefigures released by the Midem Or-ganisation. Last year 149 compa-nies took part, this year the numberwas up to 233, representing majorbroadcast organisations in 24countri..

Prominent among them wereAustria's national channel OE,Canada's CBC, Danmarks Radio,Finland's Oy Yleisradio, Hungarian

RTE,and Magyar Radio, Ireland's

RTE, Radio Tele Luxembourg,Holland's AVRO and Veronica, Pol-ish radio and tv, Sveriges Radiofrom Sweden, the BBC, PiccadillyProductions and US syndicatorWestwood One. French participa-tion was, of course, particularlystrong, with Radio France alone

taking up several pages in the Mid -em guide and with FM stations alsowell represented.

Overall, attendance at this 21stMidem was marginally up on lastyear's event, the number of profes-sionals attending being set at 7.602compared with 7.519 last year, andthe number of participating compa-nies at 1.987 compared with 1.986the year before. The number ofcompanies with stands was 825,well ahead of last year's 726,although this large increase is partlyexplained by the growing number ofjoint stands putting together a largenumber of companies who couldnot afford to exhibit alone.

CD was without question thekey theme of the event, with manymanufacturers touting for customand licences for CD product eager-ly sought.

was fantastic. We had l®%response from all over Europe.Everyone was over the moon aboutthe programming and the schedulesespecially the European toucheslike the Dutch Van Der Valk series, the European 'What The PapersSay' (produced by Granada TV) andthe review programme about -Dutchan. The launch 'nog... withMs Thatcher went down very welltoo. We did have some teethingproblems and lost the signal forabout an hour on Sunday morningbut on the whole the technology hasbeen very exciting. And our firstlive broadcast, the Dennis Tay-lor/Alex Higgins snooker game, went faultlessly."

The opening package wasviewed almost entirely in house-holds connected to cable systemsand the initial audience was inherit-ed from the old Music Box au-dience. Since the news that MusicBrix would change to Super Chan-

nel, it's estimated that the audiencehas gone from 4.5 million to almost7 million.

"Our success depends, ofcourse, on cable uptake but we havealready added Austria, Ireland andNorway to the countries that couldreceive Music Box, but our biggestmarkets are Holland with 2.5 mil-lion and Germ. with 1.5 million.Naturally we are concerned aboutthe language problem but we com-pensate for this by choosing specificsort of material, for example, 'TheOrchestra shown on our firstweekend was one -and -a -half hoursof mime comedy. We concentrateon visual tv."

Hooper is of course confident ofSuper Channel's success and seeslittle to stand in its way, includingthe introduction of America's MTVin a few months: "I don't thinkMTV will be any significant com-petition for us, they still have a lot tolearn. They don't have cable orsatellite and have to start fromscratch. Good luck to them."

Controversy Around NewItalian Video Law

by Vittorio CastelliThe Indian government bas passedtwo laws relating to video cassettes, the first concerning piracy and the

miIn av attempt m eradicate piracy,

the government has decreed that allpre-recorded video cassettes mustbear the stamp of the Italian SocietyOf Authors & Publishers (SIAE).Any cassette not bearing the stampwill automatically be considered apirate and therefore subject to exist-ing anti -piracy regulations. Thosefound guilty of making or sellingpirate videos can be fined between600.000 and six million lire, andcould face imprisonment of up tothree years.

The second law is somewhatmore controversial. A circular fromthe Ministry of the Interior hasmade it clear that the sale and rentof pre-recorded videos are subjectto the same censorship laws as filmsshown in cinemas. It also meanshome video dealers must obtain apolice licence and keep specialhook -keeping accounts for all cas-senes sold.

President of Univideo, the tradeassociation of home producers anddealers, Umberto Virri, has spokenout angrily against the ruling claim-ing it is unfair, "I feel that since tv

statMns are not subject to censor-ship rules it's discriminating againstvideo users. We will never acceptthis. We're going to fight it all theway. We believe it's against ourconstitution."

Having sold one and a half mil-lion copies of 'Picture Book' in Eu-rope alone, their second album'Men And Women' is expected tobecome an immediate bestseller.Ten new tracks produced by AlexSadkin (Duran Duran, Joe Cockerand recently Robbie Nevil) con-tinue Simply Red's distinctivebrand of soul, dance pop and r&b.The first single from the band's newalbum is called, 'The Wight Thing',(the B-side 'There's A Light' is noton the album) and is out this weekfollowed by the album on March 2.The album features two tracks writ-ten by the group's front man, MickHucknell and Lamont Do/ ler, one

The band'sreputation as a live act is firmly es-tablished and the forthcoming Eu-ropean tour is sure to meet up withlots of consumer reaction.

That was way back in 1982,today the band is seen by many asthe sole purveyors of true pop, aband that could change the ratherfossilized outlook of the hit parade.Big words and big hype maybe, butapparently evoked by the sheerstrength of their songs.

Originally signed through theindependent label Kitchenware

(Prefab Sprout's label), Hurrah!released their debut single 'The SunShines Here/I'll Be Your Surprise'in the summer of 1982 at the tenderage of 17. Four more singles follow-ed which were later compiled on aKitchenware album, 'Boxed: LongShot Pomes From Broke Players'.Arista signed them up in 1986 andthe first single under the new con-tract was entitled 'Sweet Sanity'.

Beatby Paul bruin

The Euro American Beat focuses on European acts that arehitting big in the American charts. Its author is PAULGREIN who writes the popular Chartbeat column inBillboard. Grein, who reports regularly on pop musk forBillboard and Los Angeles Times, Roes in Studio City,California.

Duran Duran have extended theirenviable string of US hits with thesingle and album, 'Notorious. Thetine track on the group's fifth albumeffortlessly became the band'sseventh top five single at the end oflast year making Duran Duran thelong-distance champs of the manyBritish acts that emerged from the

1983 British Invasion. CultureClub, the group's chief chart rivalsat the time, earned four top five hitsin just over a year 0983-84), buthasn't made it back to the top fivesince.

Duran Duran first cracked thetop five in March 1983 with 'Hun-gry Like The Wolf, a song from

their second album, 'Rio'. Theymade it back to the whaler's circletwice that year. They scored in Julywith, 'Is There Something I ShouldKnowr, a track from their firstalbum, and in December with 'Un-ion Of The Snake, a hit from theirthird album, 'Seven And The Rag-ged Tiger.

The group landed its first no. 1

single in lune 1984 with 'TheReflex' and nearly repeated the featsix months later when 'The WildBoys' peaked at no. 2. They made itback to no. 1 in July 1985 with 'AView 'lb A Kill'. And now they havemade it to no. 2 with 'Notorious.

The ease with which Duran Du-ran chalks up top five hits is re-markable, especially consideringthat neither of the group's offshootsin '85 was able to crack the top five:Power Station's 'Some Like It Hot'and Arcadia's 'Election Day' bothpeaked at no. 6.

Duran Duran's albums have alsodone well °tithe US charts, if not aswell as their singles. Their first fouralbums all cracked the top 10, andtheir fifth, 'Notorious', was bulletedat no. 14 in mid -January. But onlyone of their releases the live album,'Arena', cracked the top five. It

peaked at no. 4 in January, 1985.The 'Power Station' album

reached no. 6 in August 1985, andArcadia's 'So Red The Rose madethe top 15 in early 1986. Both al-bums also went platinum.

Duran Duran isn't the only Brit-ish group to land a no. 2 hit on theAmerican char. in recent weeks.Wang Chung's 'Everybody HaveFun Tonight' peaked in the mu -wrap spot in the last week of De-cember, kept out of the top spot bythe Bangles"Walk Like An Egypti-an', which also blocked 'Notorious'.

Wang Chung first cracked AlUS top 40 in February, 1984 with'Don't Let Go'. They landed theirfirst top 20 hit a few months laterwith 'Dance Hall Days'.

The clue to both of WangChung's hits was their strong dancebase. 'Dance Hall Days' reachedno. 1.00 the dance/disco chart, and'Everybody Have Fun lbnight' wasa top five dance hit.

While the lack of new album releases is appar-ent, a situation troubling the poor reviewer forsome weeks now, there are plenty of good sin-gles around.

Worldparty, the band fronted by ex -Water -boys Karl %Ringer, have just released their se-cond single, Ship Of Fools through En-sign/Chrysalis. It's a compelling blues basedtrack taken from their highly under estimated(also by M&M) debut album 'Private Revolu-tion'. Apart from the obligatory 12" format,Chrysalis is also releasing the track on a specialcompact disc single, containing two extratracks, Private Revolution and Trouble DownHere. It marks the Ems time that Chrysalis isreleasing a CD single.

After a shun stint at London Records, ex-Shalamar female vocalist Jody Walley is nowhoping for a glorious come -back along the linesof lanes Jackson last year. On her self titled solodebut Watley teams up with Prince bass playerAndre Cymone, David Z. (from that otherMinneapolis band MaRarati), Bernard Ed-wards, Pat Leonard (Madonna) and even Ge-orge Michael crops up in a duet. With the al-bum coming out soon, MCA issues the firstsingle, looking For A New love, a very slick, tight and solid tune with a persuasive beat, moulded much like land Jackson's 'What HaveYou Done For Me Lately.

Ex -Men At Work singer Colin James Haytries for something new on his debut solo singleHold Me. Produced by Robin Millar (Sade andthe like), his wry vocals are backed by a hyp-notic African choir and a hectic horn section. Not the easiest one to programme, so we staytuned in for his forthcoming album Looking ForJack.

We love the new single by the UK trio ViewHUM The Hill; maybe not the sheer brillianceof their debut 'No Conversation', but again astirring and polished classic soul ballad.Produced by Stuart Levine (who was behindthe knobs for albums from Culture Club andSimply Red), the track is from a forthcomingdebut album on EMI.

If you like your pop to be fresh, listen toKitchenware act Hurrah!. The band is featured

in an to Spotlight on page 7 and we urge youto check out the band's knack for writing pure, simple but effective pop songs.

So much for the New Tale., there is alsonew superstar product from Spandau Ballet(who continue their epic and dramatic stylewith How Many Lies), Tina Turner's rockingWhat You Get Is What You See (only the Dutchmarket deviates with another single: the Bowiepenned 'Girls'), the new Level 42 single Blin-n* In The Family (another winner after theirworldwide success with 'Lessons In Love'),Dunn Duran's Skin 7h2de (very moody andsung in Prince -like style) and Bananarama(the girls who am always so dependant onproduction), with Thek Of the Night.

In The European Airplay Top 50 RobbieNevil's C'est Las Vie tops for the third consecu-tive week and shooting up in the top 10 areAretha & George with their ultra smooth IKnew You Wire %king, Mel & Kim's ShowingOut and Gregory Abbott's Shake Era Down. The latter is currently on a heavy promotiontrip across Europe which you can read all aboutit in next week's Spotlight.

The hottest record is Europe is SimplyRed's The Right Thing, the single is this week'shighest entry in the Airplay Top 50 at 28 (seethis week's Spotlight).

A new no. 1 in the Ha 100 Singles is AlisonMoyet's is This Love replacing she eight weeks'chad topper The Final Countdown.

BACK CATALOGUEAs mentioned earlier in this issue, the lack ofsuperstar product carries on, even in February. The major labels especially seem to be concen-trating on their back catalogue, especially in re-lation to CD. Good examples include the eager-ly anticipated CDs from The Beatles, Mleasedby EMI February 26, and Atlantic's superb ar-chive compilations, the Atlantic Rhythm &Blues Box (14 LPs, recently available in CDformat) followed this month by Atlantic Blues(eight albums) and Atlantic Jazz (15 albums). ACD release Mr the latter two is anticipated inthe US, although plans thr Europe are stillunknown. Another label concentrating on illvaults is Motown which is releasing TwoOriginal Albums On 1 CD compilation fromits own rich musical heritage, featuring TheSupremos, Smokey Robinson, The Tempta-tions etc.

Talking about CDs, A&M has releasedsome interesting remixes, on CD only, ofisoetJackson's 'Control', entitled Control - TheRemixes. Containing eight tracks, the CD fea-tures 'The Video ma' (very popular amongstsoul/disco dj's for its bard hitting beats) and 'ACapella Version' of Control as well as differentmixes of the hits Nasty (check out the 'CoolSummer Mix'), What Have You Done For MeLately, When I Mink Of Ifm and Let's Ifhit AWhile.

Although several exciting album releaseswere expected this month, some of them havebeen delayed; Whitney Houston's second al-bum is now scheduled for the last week ofMarch, while the release date of Michael Jack-son's follow up to 'Thriller' is as yet unknown.

Other new albums expected for the spring in-clude David Bowie, U2, Go West, Simply Red,The Scorpions, Simple Minds and Def

LePP.ThMemajor release this week is the new

Style Council album Die Cost Of Loving. It isthe band's third album (excluding last year'slive LP) and its range of different musical stylesis striking. Side one features funky tunes andside two concentrates on softer and mom sen-sual tracks. With the help of the ValentineBrothers ('Money's Too Tight To Mention') andCurtis Mayfield, Paul Weller's songwriting ta-lent gets good exposure. However, his vocalscould have been jacked up a bit as they soundrather droll. Tracks worth checking include thesparsely arranged The Cost Of Loving withDee. C. L. taking the lead vocals, the militantrap Right To Go (very much George Clinton -like) and the moody Angel (done earlier by An-ita Baker).

Real American rock comes from John Ed -die's self tided debut album on CBS. Althoughdefinitely not mere imitation, his music is in-fluenced by Springsteen as Eddie is the first toadmit. With help from Springsteen musicianslike Max Weinberg and Nils Lofgren, his rock

mil style is convincing and auspicious.Tracks that stand out include the country tingedBuster, the sweeping anthem Jungle Boy (verymuch influenced by Eddy Cochran) and theemotional Hide Out.

The highest album entry is Erasure's debutHimderland, coming in at no. 33. The duo'ssuccess first started in France with 'Oh(Amour' but real a.lain came with their'Sometimes' single.

Highlights

Top 10 Best Selling SinglesThis week, Music & Media presents the Top 10 Best Selling Singles of 1986from selected European markets in place of our usual Highlights.

The most successful single last year in terms of the amount of countriescharted, was Madonna's Papa Don't Preach, the winner of M&M's Hot 100Year End 1986. Strangely enough, the single never tops any of the lists be-low, but is featured in six European countries including the IX, Holland,Belgium, Italy, Norway and Denmark.

There are often complaints that national product is faced more and morewith incr.sed competition from Anglo-Saxon music; France however is nottroubled by such problems, apart from Cock Robin's The Promise IbitMade, their Top 10 Best Selling Singles is solely national product with Im-ages' Les Demons De Minna topping the list. Another country where localproduct is well represented is Austria with seven German/Austrian produc-tions faring well. Austria is followed by Denmark with five local produc-tions in the Top 10 Best Selling Singles.

Lars Muhl- Big Boys Are Hungry (Genlyd) DenmarkFor all info contact Jesper Mardahl at Genlyd, tel. 6-149700, tlx 68673.Self-assured vocals on this epic rock theme where lead guitars and hems contend for mastery. Composedby the Danish singer/songwriter Muhl, it is taken from an album with the Odiously long tit], 'The GloriousArt Of Breaking Little Girls' Hearts And Blowing Big lags' Brains', made with the help of 20 session musi-cians. Stay tuned in for that note.

MPH- Rock Lady (New firlents Agency) SwitzerlandFor all info contact Andre Simile on tel. 22-323202/313191.Spicy solid hard rock with the musicians being room interesting than the rather corny chorus. Swiss triocombines some basic pop ingredients with the usual hard rock stuff. Available to all countries, release inSwitzerland this month.

Chafi- A Cheque Fois (Jonathan) FranceFor all info contact Martine Moscoviu at Atoll Music, tel. 143666922; tlx. 215795.Since the days of Gainsbourg & Birkin's panting experiment that shocked and swept across the world, muchhas changed in France. The French aro particularly keen and clever at combining suggestive vocals with adisco beat md this one is yet another example of this. Judging by the vocals on this poppy disco bubble gum,one oenainlY would not believe theY belonged to a woman of 25, they are more like the early orgasmicscreams of a toddler! Nevertheless it's unrelenting catchy and banally commercial.

First Patrol- The Streets Of Miami (Zyx) GermanyFor all info contact Zyx Records on tel. 6436-4052; dx. 4821614.Insistent rap vocals over an ordinary disco base, shamelessly exploiting Falco's 'The Sound Of Musik' withJan Hammer's 'Miami Vice Theme. Nothing new but who's complaining when the single is already top 50in Gennany7

Taboo- Sexy Girl (mane.. Records) SwitzerlandPubl. and master owner: contact Victor Waldburger/Carlos Peron on tel. 71-255666New five -strong Swiss band that picked up considerable attention on German radio stations with this single.Signed to Bellaphon for GAS countries, this catchy pop single with driving and powerful rhythms combinedwith a fresh chorus has strong chances to cross over to other European territories. The single is culled fromthe album 'Ten Hundred Thousand', also available in CD format.

Alice- Park Hotel (LP) (EMI) ItalyFor all info contact EMI on tel. 2-9650701; tlx. 312679.With the help of renowned session musicians (Jerry Marotta on drums, Tony Levin on bass, Phil Manzaneraon guitars and Michele Fedrigmti on keyboards), Italian singer Alice comes up with an ambitious sixth al-bum. Two years ago she charted in some European countries with the Italian entry for the Eurovision SongFestival, Treni Di Tozeurl a dun with Franco Battu.. This new album offers enough single candidates(the intimate 'Cit. Chiusal the medium paced 'Nuvole Bosse' and the ballad 'II Sense Dei Desideri') andher sultry, mature vocals have a very distinctive touch. Backed up by . excellent and efficient band, thistalented singer and songwriter (a superstar in her own country) is sure to win the hearts of many.

Off- Electrica Salsa (Baba Baba) (Zyx) GermanyFor all info contact Zyx Records on tel. 49-64364052.Yet .other hit for Zyx Records, already top 10 in Germany and about to break in the Benelux. As so oftenin these cases, one simple idea is pushed forward to its extremes and in the end becomes either a novelty orsimply boring. This record has both qualities and exploits the musical mncepts of ICniftwerk and Trio. Withits danceable claim beat and the computer/vocal gimmicks, a definite Euro cross -over hit.

CirCUI0 ViCIOSO- Mierileg (WEA) SpainFor all info contact Retina Bose at WEA, 01. 1-40503111.Young Spanish band from Seville who were spotted in this section with their debut single Tonere De Noche'(also the title of their debut album) last year (see issue no. 14). This is their third single from that album andfeatures brooding guitars aver a driving beat. Not highly original but certainly a band io watch out for.

NEW TALENT UPDATEThis column will give a weekly update en theprogression of MAIM New Talent Tips In Fuumpe

Luna Parker

Slightly oriental melody lines, a stomping beatand a good hook, these form the ingredients oflam. Parker's Tes Etats Mme ... Eric, theFrench duo that were spotted in this section lastyear (November 29). The Barclay signed duo,Eric Tabuchi and Dominique Dubois, am tar-ing very well in the French charts, their singleis currently at no. 11 and also gets heavy playson both the FM and the AM stations. Checkthis record out as it is not the usual disco stuffbut has, just Idle Rita Mitsouko's 'Mamma Bai-ls', that artful touch that makes such produc-tions worthwhile. Apart from the French lyricsthere should be no excuse for any European DInot to play, or at least consider, this track.

German independent label Zyx Recordscurrently has three successful records in theGerman top 75. The label specialises in thetypically weird and one-off disco singles andOff's Elearica Salsa, a shrewd mix of Kraft-werk .d Trio, is currently no. 4 in the Germancharts, 27 in Belgium and about to break inHolland. The label is also successful with FirstPatrol's The Streets Of Miami (this week's NewTalent tip), currently no. 50, Kots's Jandah(licensed from Italian Memory Records), andwith the halo Boot Mir (a disco mix containinglabdahl Eddy Huntington's USSR and someothers), still top 30. The label is also successhdin having the rights for the German market ofHeide Wilson's Peet Petite.

Record companies, publishers and pro-ductions companies wishing to submitmaterial to this section should send theirrecords, biographies and photo materialto: M&M, The Editor, P.O. Box 50558,1007 DD Amsterdam, Holland.
