    S ix of the seven chapte rs in The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible began a sthe Speake r ' s Lec ture s a t Oxfo rd Un ive rs i ty , de l ive red dur ing the f i r s ttwo weeks o f May 2009. For the pu b l i s hed fo rm o f th e l ec tu re s , I havechanged the f i r s t pe r son addre ss o f the speeches to the th i rd pe r son , en t e r e d m a n y m i n o r a lt e r a t i o n s i n t o t h e t e x t s , a n d su p p o r t e d t h e s t a t e m e n t sin the t ex t s w i th foo tno te s .

    I am gra te ful to John Bar ton of Or ie l Col lege for the invi ta t ion to be theSpeaker ' s Lec turer .
