This Week’s Main School News

The AHS Journey

Year 9 - Understanding yourself and others Year 9 is a year that we hope will build both subject specific skills and a deeper understanding of the subjects they will be studying at GCSE. This is a pivotal year: students are now in the middle of their AHS journey and we take substantial time during Year 9 to allow students to reflect and understand themselves and others. Time is taken throughout this period of transition to reflect upon what they have achieved and secure foundations for the challenges future years will bring. As well as this staggered start to GCSE subjects, Year 9 are also benefiting from new Character and Culture lessons as well as PSHCE and IT lessons for all students. We have also planned a number of additional enrichment opportunities. One such opportunity took place last week when Year 9 students were off timetable on Friday Period 5 to explore the concept of ‘Understanding myself, understanding others: Out of Africa’ through an hour long talk by David Taylor and Natasha McCreesh. This was a fascinating talk which gave students lots to think about. Students were provided with an insight into Liberian culture. They were also given opportunities to consider bigger concepts about themselves, such as what is my motivation? and what can I do to make a difference? This is just one of many examples where Year 9 have the opportunity to step back from their day-to-day curriculum and consider their values within the world.

Message from Head of Year 9Welcome to Mr Stevens who joins the Year 9 pastoral team and has already improved students’ social time with the acquisition of footballs, aerobies, cricket equipment and the like for them to use at lunchtimes in order to expend some energy. The last thirteen weeks have been busy as Year 9 settle into the routine of GCSE learning, learnt the lie of the land in terms of expectations, target grades and can now clearly see the road to travel in order to achieve. The Year 9 tutors would like to give a ‘shout out’ to the students who support them in form time with the news, thought for the day and by being polite. It is fantastic to see so many Year 9s involved in numeracy mentoring, refereeing for primary sports festivals, belonging to school teams, taking part in the school show and showing an interest in the Minster service at the end of term. This busy term leads into a busy time of year, a time to think about others and reflect on the Christmas they might have. Wednesday 4 December is the Year 9 Compassion Gift Day when we would ask all Year 9 students to bring in a coin to form a whole year group collection ~ any denomination will be gratefully received. Donations will help another family to have a nicer Christmas than they would have done. Thank you to everyone who provided prizes for the Christmas Fayre raffle which is next Friday, 29 November. The school is looking forward to welcoming all parents and carers to the Year 9 Parent’s Evening on Wednesday 4 December, 3.45–7.15pm; thank you to those who have politely let us know they are unable to attend on the evening, Mrs Chappell, Mr Stevens or Miss Turvey will be telephoning you to make an alternative appointment. Year 9 reports have been sent home so that you can plan for Parents’ Evening in terms of who to see and ask questions of; if you haven’t received your child’s report please contact school for a copy. The Meadowhall reward trip at then end of term will round this section of the academic year off very nicely and as always if there are any problems, celebrations or issues please do get in touch. Miss Turvey

Science RevisionScience Period 6 revision continues this week in preparation for the Pre-public Exams (w/c 25 November). We would like as many students as possible, please!! The lessons will be bespoke to each pupils’ tier of entry and will address the key concepts to be examined in the paper so please do encourage your child to attend. Students should check the rooming notice in Science for their course (Trilogy/Triple) and their tier of entry (Foundation/Higher) as well as the notices each Wednesday morning. The schedule is as follows:

History Film ClubSo much of the history we share and learn is communicated through storytelling. Come, watch and discuss Hidden Figures, based on Margaret Lee Shetterly’s book of the same name. Support Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson as they work tirelessly for NASA to end the space race. Starting Thursday 28 November, at lunchtimes, we will ask ourselves what is the truth behind this movie and why have they chosen to show it this way?

Cape Town Crew Walk to raise money for AfricaBlisters, mud slides, laughter and smiles were the order of the day as the weather held off the usual torrential rain to provide a beautiful wintery sunshine day ~ perfect for walking. The Year 10 Cape Town Crew successfully completed their 12 mile sponsored walk from Ravenscar to Boggle Hole via Robin Hoods Bay and High Hawsker via the Cinder Path and Cliff Edge.A huge thank you to Jan for organising, Anita, Emma and Mark for being the back-up drivers and popping up with hot chocolate and flapjack, and to Nic, Christine and Rosie (the dog) for walking the way with the students. The leg muscles may be sore, but the hearts are grateful to all who have sponsored this event and we look forward to spending this hard earned money on community projects across Cape Town In April 2020. The justgiving page (link below) is still open for the next couple for donations. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ahs-year10-capetown2020?utm_medium=email&utm_source=ExactTarget&utm_campaign=20191119_114718Well done to the walkers: Aimee, Becca, Peter, Fenton, Jocelin, Abbey, Orla, George, Dan, Fran and Emma. The Cape Town Crew will also be Bag Packing in Morrisons on Monday 9 December from 4.30–9.00pm ~ so it you needed more reasons to shop at Morrisons then having your bag packed perfectly and being able to help out the fundraising would be great. Thank you.

The KS3 Student Council are working hard on their year long “climate” focus. They have met, along with a group of Prefects, to start fact finding about what the school can do to reduce waste and the impact on climate change. They have started exploring the following areas: • The introduction of litter picks around school• Alternatives to purchasing plastic drink bottles • How to raise students’ awareness of the impact they have on the environment • Simple ways to save energy • The introduction of a new “climate award”All these ideas, and the developing plans, are led by the students and their forms. The Student Council Reps meet, bi-weekly, to update on their actions and to bring feedback and contributions from their forms. These student actions aim to make the school a happier and better place for all! More to come in future weeks.

Rewards and Recognition

PLEASE SHARE: If you would like to share students’ achievements and events in the community, please email [email protected]. It’s always nice to celebrate our school community.

Sixth Form SupportThe Sixth Form Support timetable is now underway. Students are expected to attend the subject support as part of their personal study plan to allow them to further consolidate skills and knowledge. With Year 13 PPEs very soon, BTEC external assessments straight after Christmas and Year 12 PPEs mid-January, there is no excuse to miss these invaluable opportunities to gain more support and guidance.

School Captain InterviewsMr Daly and Mrs De Lashley will be interviewing applicants for School Captains on Friday. We have a strong field and are thoroughly looking forward to their presentations.

UCAS DeadlineOur UCAS deadline for Year 13 applying to University is the end of November. This is an important deadline as it means that students can move on and focus on their studies rather than their comprehensive applications. This also means that they can receive offers on those courses that have limited numbers. A large number of offers have been coming in for those that have already applied. An exciting time!

Year 11 IAG meetingsIndividual Pathway meetings are still underway and missed appointments will be rescheduled after the PPEs have finished. It’s been great meeting Year 11 students!

Accelerated ReaderTop Quizzers of the WeekYear 7 Top Form: Looks like Mr Thompson’s class is back in the game! Well done all.

Dear Parents/Carers of Year 9 studentsAs you can see, each week I publish quizzing data from our Accelerated Reader programme. For the last few weeks, Year 9 results have been incredibly low. What this suggests is that students are not engaging with their reading books outside of school and few of them are quizzing on completed books. I cannot stress enough just how important reading for pleasure is to a child’s academic success and their life chances. Please could you strongly encourage students to read their books and quiz once completed within 48 hours. Students have their login details., but should see their teacher if they have lost or forgotten them. The website to log in is: https://ukhosted83.renlearn.co.uk/1893564.Finally, this quote reinforces why we so strongly encourage our students to read: “Developing a love of reading can be more important for a child’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic background.” (OECD, 2002)

Holiday Christmas CompassionIt is the season to shop, spend money, be creative, visit family, enjoy time with friends and to eat, drink and be thankful; it is also the time to think of others ~ those who we are unable to see during the festive season and those who might not experience the same type of Christmas or holiday season as we do.

Thank you for the contributions to the Children in Need non-uniform day - we raised nearly £1000; this will go towards funding projects such as Lollipop, based in York, which supports deaf and hearing impaired children. Thank you also for the food bank donations; with 1 in 5 people in the UK now living in poverty it is essential that those who are able, continue to support those within our communities who are struggling. The school Foodbank is, as always, open to receive tins, packets and cartons.

Our next non-uniform day will be on Thursday 19 December, those who have them already are encouraged to wear their Christmas jumpers again or wear the ‘colours of Christmas’ - red, green, gold etc. Monies raised will go to the Fikelela AIDS Foundation who work on preventing the spread of HIV through an education programme, as well as supporting those who are HIV positive. (This is the same day as the Meadowhall reward trip.)

The Christmas Fayre, on Friday 29 November, will be a fantastic event and a lovely start to getting into the festive spirit; however, spare a thought for the Sixth Form students who will that night be sleeping out in the Spiritual Garden for Carecent. The idea being to highlight the reality of homelessness as well as raise some money.

Our final Christmas based compassionate act is the Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal. Please bring unwrapped presents to school on, or by, Thursday 12 December and pass to form tutors. We believe every child deserves a new gift at Christmas so we are unable to take used or secondhand items for the Christmas Present Appeal (https://www.salvationarmy.org.uk/christmas-present-appeal).

Well done to all the ladies that took part. Excellent play and team work by all students involved. Star players Libby Anderson and Rosie Davies.

Extra-Curricular ProgrammePlease take a look at the new extra-curricular programme. There are many new clubs this half-term as well as some familiar ones. All are welcome!

School PE KitAs we return from half-term we would like to remind parents that all PE kit should be clearly named. If a student misplaces any PE kit, this makes it easier to return items to their rightful owner.

OF THE WEEK

Hegemony: The dominant value set in a culture, group, community or organisation. In media studies, hegemony refers to the ways in which the media encourage people to consent to status quo power structures.

@BewerleyPark: Group 4 from Archbishop Holgate down the mine this afternoon @AHSYork #mine #nyols #bewerleypark #ukgreatestoutdoorclassroom

FootballThe Year 8 team headed to Sherburn last week in what turned out to be terrible weather conditions - strong rain and wind compounded with freezing temperatures. Despite the conditions, the team managed to play a perfect away performance; countering quickly and putting the opposition under pressure. The side went on to win the game 2-0. Player of the match went to Will Flatt who’s brilliant off the ball runs and great finishing made the difference. Well done to all that played. The Year 10 football team who comprehensively overcame George Pindar School, Scarborough, 15-0 in the third round of the County Cup. In a simply excellent team performance the goal

getters were: Charlie Petch (3), Bobby Mortimer (2), Dimitri Georgiou (2), Yonese Lazrak (2), Adam Wong, Harrison Cain, Jonathan Dash, George Pye, Benji Sellers and Reg Rogerson.

Frisbee ClubMr McBride started to run the successful Ultimate Frisbee Club at the end of last year and numbers have swelled to 20 plus most weeks. The long term aim of the group is to enter the National Outdoor tournament in June of 2020! Here is a photo of our coach (Ben) practising with our players. The discs were bought using a donation from the Archbishop Holgate’s School Association which has allowed us to expand our game play and practise capacity. If anyone in Year 7 and 8 is keen to join – we meet on Thursdays, at lunchtime, in the Sports Hall. All you need are trainers!
