Introduction

• If you are on your last day….like most have realized three majors things that really mattered:

What matters most…

• Faith – your relationship with God• Family – was I a good son/daughter;

mother/father; sister/brother; cousin; grandchild; etc?

• Friends – what kind of friend have you become?

Thoughts to ponder

• We spend so much time on that which does not matter in the end, in which we neglect which really matters

• Marriages falling apart….If only the husband and wife simply would have done what the Bible says

• Marriage is meant to be forever

Bible says to husband…• “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church

and gave himself up for her” Eph. 5:25

• “In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” Eph. 5:28

• “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” 1 Peter 5:7

Bible says to wives…

• “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. “ Eph. 5:22

• “Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” Eph. 5:28

Ask yourself

• Do you believe the Bible is the Word of God?– “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to

teach us what is true and make us realize what is wrong in our lives…It is God’s way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do” 2 Timothy 3:16

Ask yourself

• If you believe the Bible is the Word of God, are you going to obey it?– It is NOT enough to believe without obedience

/action / application.– “Unless the Lord builds a house, they labor in vain

that build it.” • (Whether it be your home, your family, your marriage

or even your very life….without God, we are doomed)

Thoughts to ponder

• Expect the rains and floods…it will come. The question is, did you prepare yourself?

• Every marriage will …Be TestedFace DifficultyBe Attacked

Chapter 1: Marriage: God’s Idea• Every marriage goes through changes as the years pass by.• The Seven Stages of a Married Cold

• 1st year — The husband says, “Oh, sweetie pie, I’m really worried about those nasty sniffles you have! There’s no telling what that could turn into with all the strep that’s been going around. I’m going to take you right down to the hospital and have you admitted for a couple days of rest. I know the food is lousy there, so I’m going to bring you some takeout from China Garden. I’ve already arranged it with the head nurse.”

• 2nd year — “Listen, honey, I don’t like the sound of that cough. I called the doc and he’s going to stop by here and take a look at you. Why don’t you just go on to bed and get the rest you need?”

• 3rd year — “Maybe you better go lie down, darling. When you feel lousy you need the rest. I’ll bring you something–do we have any canned soup around here?”

• 4th year — “No sense wearing yourself out when you’re under the weather. When you finish those dishes and the kids’ baths and get them to bed, you ought to go to bed yourself!”

• 5th year — “Why don’t you take a couple aspirin?”• 6th year — “You oughta go gargle or something, instead of sitting around barking like a

dog!”• 7th year — “For Pete’s sake, stop sneezing. Are you trying to give me pneumonia? You’d

better pick up some tissues while you’re at the store.”

Marriage: God’s Design

• Eve was formed from Adam’s rib• Man shall leave his mother and father and be

joined to his wife – Genesis 2:24• Two become one• Tamper with God’s original plan = Peril/Danger• Importance of Leave and Cleave

Chapter 2: Why It’s Hard Work

• God wants to bless our marriage. After all, it was God who:– Designed it– Originated it– Established it

BUT• Satan wants to destroy our marriages /

relationships

• ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

• Matthew 19: 5-6

What can Defeat storms in marriage?

• NOT intimacy• But principles

• Looking out for number one• Wanting to make him/her happy not the

opposite• Not putting our own needs, desire, emotion

and interest first

Dare to be different

• Walk worthy• Don’t think as this world thinks• Be separate• Let god re-make you• Do not conform• Following the crowd – you can get lost!
