Investment Information
This fund started with a bang and has continued to impress over the lastfive years. It has held onto a five-star rating from July 2013, when it firstbegan to figure in Value Research rankings. It under-owns small caps ascompared to its peers. The mandate allows up to a 35 per cent investmentin the top 100 companies by market cap, with 65 per cent exposure tofirms that fall outside the top 100. This fairly loosely defined mandateallows this fund almost a free hand in selecting its stocks, the only caveatbeing that it avoids tiny-size companies, with operating profit below R100crore. This is a quality-focused fund, with ROCE being a primary filter toselect stocks. The fund, however, does prefer to buy stocks with a marginof safety on price. The fund's track record is limited, but whatever recordis there is quite impressive. Starting in 2011, the fund has beaten itsbenchmark and category by big margins in every one of the five yearssince its launch. Bull or bear phases have gone equally well for the fund.Three-year returns of 37.6 per cent are among the highest in the category. The portfolio allocation shows a consistent 55-60 per cent allocation tomid-cap stocks (higher than the category) and a 20-25 per cent to largecaps. Small caps make up 25 per cent or so but have been trimmed inthe last one year. It is an emerging star in the mid-cap space forconservative investors and a fund to watch. But the limited track recordargues for phased increases in one's holdings.
