Medicinal Value of Lac : A Journey through Time Lac, the only resin of animal origin dates back to the Mahabharata era; it is remarkable that even thousands of years back, people used to collect or culvate lac for various uses. Lac has exceponal environmentally compable properes – biodegradable, non-toxic and generally recognized as physiologically safe. However, no documentary evidence is available about exactly when and how lac was first exploited for its medicinal properes. Ayurveda is arguably one of the oldest tradional systems of medicine in pracce today. Resin and lac dye find extensive use in Ayurvedic systems of medicine. A Verse in the Atharva Veda tled as Lakhsa gives a brief account of the lac insect and the medicinal properes of lac – ‘Whoever drinketh thee hath life. Thou savest and protectest man. As nursing mother of mankind, thou takest all upon thy lap’ (Atharva Veda 5, 5). It reports that extract of lac was useful for open wounds for quick healing and ssue regeneraon, slurry of lac paste in water mixed with ghee and milk was commonly taken orally by sick or wounded persons to get back health; lac dye was not only safe enough to be used on open wounds but was also taken orally quite oſten to recoup health and vigor. Modern ayurvedic oil based decocons, lakshadi tail, or 'lac oil', are said to be effecve in Dermas, Osteoarthris, Paralysis, Psoriasis, Rheumasm, Synovis, Urcaria and Wounds. Apart from Ayurvedic System of Medicine, lac is also being used as drug in other Complementary and Alternave Medicines (CAM) system especially in Indian system of medicine namely Unani and Siddha. In Unani medicine lac is known as ‘Luk’. Lac has been described as drug having many medicinal that has been in pracce since ages for its an- obesity, deobsterent and is an excellent liver tonic. Various Unani medicine formulaons have lac as a chief constuent. Out of several hundreds of documented Unani formulaons, some prescribed for an-inflammatory and an-obese acon; contain (1 – 11.1 %) lac as an ingredient. Recently, it has been pre-clinically evaluated for its hypo- lipidemic acon and an-ferlity acon showing promising results. released, sustained or delayed-action pills. The product is listed on the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) inactive ingredient list. The efficiency of shellac to achieve moisture protection and taste masking is comparable with that of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), which is most frequently used for these purposes.

Foregoing account clearly impresses that lac will continue to be an important ingredient in traditional as well as modern system of medicine. However, Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) system will have to define standards for lac to keep CAM relevant in future.

Research HighlightLac productionElectroantenogram response of Eublemma amabilisnn The electroantenogram responses of one day old Eublemma

amabilis (both sexes) were recorded with at least five different excised antennae using electroantenogram (EAG) instrument. EAG response to the individual samples were combined, pooled and averaged. Relative responses were expressed as per cent of response to standard stimulus (Heptadecane in hexane). Relative per cent response of E. amabilis to different stages of lac insect and its products samples extracted in hexane viz. crawler (138 and 128 %), adult female (121 and 123 %), resin (140 and 155 %) and whole body (218 and 159 %) were recorded from female and male of E. amabilis, respectively. EAG responses of E. amabilis female as well as male were higher to the extracts of lac insect whole body followed by lac resin, crawlers and adult female lac insect.

Processing and Product DevelopmentDevelopment of coating formulation for paper packagingnn Four coating formulations were developed in aqueous system and

applied on packaging papers. The formulations were found to be smooth, uniform and glossy. Films of formulations were studied for thermal behaviour with Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). Thermal stability of films of different compositions was recorded up to 150oC and slight softening was observed around 85-90 oC in two formulations. The coated papers were studied for mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation % and toughness. Improvement in mechanical properties was observed after coating the papers with these formulations. Tensile strength and tensile modulus increased by 76% and 90% respectively as compared to that of control. Elastic modulus was calculated and found three times increased to that of control. The formulations were observed to be flexible and showed resistance to impact as no breaking, detachment and flaking off of the films were observed. For water resistance, baked films did not show any blushing and detachment of the films from the surface while air-dried films showed some water resistance. Surface morphology of packaging paper was studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) which indicated that pores of the paper were blocked with coating of the formulations. Surface of the paper got smoothened and surface evenness was observed after coating the packaging papers with the formulations. Contact angle measurement on the coated packaging papers were carried out against water to see behaviour of the coating formulations with water. It was observed that hydrophobicity of the packaging paper increased after coating the papers with the developed formulations.

properties of the soil such as, particle density, bulk density and porosity. Particle density of the soil was calculated as per standard method using Pycnometer. For bulk density determination, finely powdered hydrogel was mixed in the soil at three different doses of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3%. All samples were allowed to absorb water to their full capacity and then kept as such at ambient temperature for several days to facilitate drying. Bulk density of all treated and control samples were calculated as per standard laboratory method.

Significant decline was observed in bulk density of treated soil as compared to control. Decreased density shows greater volume for the same weight, and hence increased porosity. Porosity of treated soil samples increased by 4% as compared to control soil samples. Since porosity supports good health of soil by boosting soil aeration and microbial count, therefore addition of guar gum hydrogels proved to be beneficial for the soil.

Dietary fibre from guar gum by enzymatic processnn Partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) is reported as a source of

water soluble dietary fiber showing physiological benefits like increase in defecating frequency and reduction in serum cholesterol, free fatty acid and glucose concentration. β-D- Mannanase from different sources vary significantly in their ability to hydrolyse galactomannans, particularly when highIy substituted. Endo-β-mannanase from Aspergillus niger was used for partial hydrolysis of guar gum and partial hydrolysis of guar gum was carried out under different reaction parameters (conc. of substrate, time and pH). Estimation of the different reaction parameters was accomplished for standardization of the optimum reaction condition of enzymatic hydrolysis of guar gum. It was observed that pH 6.0 and 40oC temperature was found optimum for enzymatic degradation of guar gum.

The viscosity of the enzymatically hydrolysed guar gum was estimated using suspended level viscometer. The molecular weight of the enzymatically degraded guar was estimated using intrinsic viscosity of the product and found to be 2.067×104 whereas that of native guar gum was in the range of 8.52×105. The study showed that the polymeric chain length of the hydrolyzed product has been reduced to one-tenth of the original molecular length of native guar gum which could be ascertained through comparison of molecular weight of both the samples. In addition to the reduction in viscosity, the solution clarity was also significantly increased in the hydrolysed product.

Standardization of black dammar tapping methodnn Three different tapping methods (box type, bore hole and strip

cut) were studied for black dammar extraction from Canarium strictum trees by, KAU, Thrissur Centre of Network Project on Harvesting, Processing and Value Addition of Natural Resins and Gums. Trees belonging to various diameter classes (<50cm, 50-100cm, 100-150cm and >150cm) were selected for tapping. In all cases maximum amount of dammar was collected from trees having girth class > 150 cm. Strip cut method was found to be more efficient method in resin extraction. In this method, a small portion of bark was removed from the tree and half blown polythene cover was fixed underneath the cut. The resin oozes through the strip and flows to the polythene cover directly. The advantage of this method was the minimum injury to the wood and the resin oozing directly to the poythene cover. This method of extraction, yielded

maximum amount of first quality resin as compared to traditional method. Also, there was a gradual increase in the production of resin towards monsoon season and it continued up to December. In strip cut method, both ends of the cut join naturally within two to three months whereas, in traditional method, it take six to ten months to produce new cells for closing the gaps.
