Known as “the town at theend of the rails,” Mansfield is anagricultural town whose grainelevators process around 1.7million bushels of wheatannually.

The town boasts a smallbusiness district, school andairport, and is well known tohang gliders for its favorablesummer weather. It is home tothe Fire in the Sky high-powerrocketry launches, and is closeto Grand Coulee Dam and LakeChelan.

Mansfield Play Days is themain event of the year. It kicksoff the second Saturday in Junewith a parade down MainStreet. There are games, tournaments and a productionby the Mansfield TheatricalCompany.

A museum houses rotatingexhibits about Mansfield’shistory, from an oldschoolhouse display to vintagewedding dresses and photosfrom the town’s natives.

Grimes and Jameson lakes, both popular fishing spots, arejust south of town. The 1,050-acre West Foster Creek Unit ofthe Wells Wildlife Area isnorthwest of town and offersshrub steppe habitat to a varietyof wildlife.

The area, on Bridgeport HillRoad, offers three parkingspots.

In the winter, the Mansfieldarea offers opportunities forcross-country skiers andsnowmobilers.

Settlers began arriving inMansfield in 1909 with theintroduction of the GreatNorthern Railroad. At the time, land was for sale and it wascheap.

The largest amount of grainever taken in at Mansfield was3.2 million bushels in 1981.

The farmers of Mansfieldraised soft white wheat, barleyand oats for many years; softwhite wheat remains the area’s

No. 1 crop. In recent years, canola has been added to themix.

The original plan for therailroad in 1907 would take itfrom Wenatchee up MosesCoulee and into Waterville. InNovember 1908, engineer A.F.Whitcomb approached GreatNorthern Railroad aboutextending the tracks to aplace near Mansfield.

In 1909, the railroadneared completion. TheGreat Northern Railroadbought a quarter section ofland and laid out streets andblocks. Mansfield, which atthat time existed about onemile to the northeast, wasmoved.

A telegraph line wassoon installed. InNovember of 1909, thefirst train arrived. Afterthat, two trains left perday, hauling passengers inthe morning and freightin the afternoon.

The population grewto nearly 2,500 and thetown was incorporated in1911.

Three fires in 1914took out much of thedowntown. After that, the town council passedan ordinance requiringall buildings in theaffected area to bemade of fire-proofmaterial, andprohibiting theinstallation of woodensidewalks.

The town’s firstgrain elevator wasconstructed in 1910.

Drought hit in the 1920s,followed by the GreatDepression. The railroad scaledback and in the 1950s, the trainstation building was sold andmoved out of town. By the mid-1980s, the Great Northernpulled out entirely and thetracks were removed.

Many of the buildings builtduring the boom era are stillused today.

As residents are fond ofsaying, it’s a town you drive to,not through.

PaterosPateros celebrated its

centennial in 2013, with a 100thbirthday party and additionalceremonies and festivitiesduring the annual Apple PieJamboree with its new sistercity – Pateros, Philippines.

This will be the jamboree’s67th year. Scheduled for July18-20, it features a parade, JetSki races, vendors, plenty ofhomemade pie and otheractivities.

The annual Ray StanleyMemorial Bass Tournament isthe same weekend. It’s apopular draw not only foranglers, but also for spectatorshoping to catch a glimpse of thelargest prize-winning fish.

Anglers know Pateros — theColumbia and Methow rivers, which meet at the south edge oftown, are home to variedspecies of fish.

Both rivers are open for some

kind of fishing year-round. TheOkanogan River, with more goodfishing, is only a short drive orboat ride away. There are twopublic boat launches in Pateros, accessible in all water conditions, along with three public docks forpeople who’d rather stay onshore.

There’s plenty of open waterfor canoeing and kayaking, skiing and personal watercraft, too.

Nearby Alta Lake offersboating, swimming, a state parkand an 18-hole golf course.

Lake Pateros – the ColumbiaRiver backed up by Wells Dam– is the site of Jet Ski races inJuly and, in late August, thePateros Hydro Classic.

Private companies offer trailrides during the summer, andthe Pateros area has plenty ofpublic property with off-roadpotential for motorbikes andfour-wheelers.

Pateros is well known to birdwatchers, and watchablewildlife abounds in the hillsaround town. The mid-September Chelan Ridge HawkFestival offers birding activitiesin the waterfront park, rescuedraptors and the opportunity toview birds in the wild.

Bargain hunters get theirown weekends each year withall-town yard sales in June andlate August.

Camping enthusiasts will

find plenty of room at Alta Lake. There are several motels in andaround town for those wantinga soft bed and other creaturecomforts.

Downtown Pateros boastsrestaurants and a specialtybakery, along with businessesthat offer a lot for anglers —including plenty of free advice. As downtowns go, Pateros’ isrelatively new, about50 years old, because the townwas relocatedduring theconstruction ofWells Dam in theearly 1960s.

Pateros startedas Ives Landing, named for theman whopurchased theland and laid outthe originaltownsite in thelate 1890s. Hesold out – at theinsistence of hiswife – and thetown wasrenamed by aSpanish-American Warveteran, who remembered

a town he’d encountered on histour of duty in the Philippines.

The town’s history is thesubject of a museum that openedseveral years ago.

Riverside celebrated itscentennial of incorporation in2014 and is rolling along on itssecond 100 years.

The city has a population offewer than 400 people, but ithas a lot of history and is aquiet, pleasant place to visit.

It includes a general store, gas station, city park, publicfishing, a Western store, tattooparlor, antique store, RV park,Grange Hall, pawn shop andother amenities. Some historicbuildings still stand, such asthe old schoolhouse. The 1912school bell stands in a park.

In the early 1900s,Riverside was booming, reaching a population of 350and making neighboringOmak and Tonasket looksmall.

Its success was largelydue to its place as the headof riverboat navigation onthe Okanogan River becauseof waterfalls upstream. Ithosted the first county fair in1905.

Those days of the early1900s came with their share oftroubles. Riverside’s new$3,000 drawbridge collapsed in1905. The town lost its bid to becounty seat in 1908, and twofires leveled much of thebusiness district in 1916.

The railroad came throughin 1914, spelling the end forriverboats; Riverside settledinto a quiet existence from itsformer boom days.

Riversideserves as a jumping-off point tohunting, fishing, snowmobiling,ATV, hiking, wildlife watchingand other recreationopportunities, and is just northof the Colville IndianReservation.

WinthropWhether you’re an historian,

outdoor enthusiast or just enjoygetting close to nature,Winthrop holds many charms.

The town is known for itsAmerican Old West design of allbuildings in town. The designdates back to a 1972 decisionand is upheld by townordinance.

The first white settlersarrived as trappers in the 1800s,some staying permanently after1883 when dreams of goldmining brought more.Winthrop’s founders came atthat time.

In 1891, Guy Waring built thetwo oldest buildings, both ofwhich still stand. One was hishome, known as The Castle —now the Shafer Museum — andthe other the original Duck BrandSaloon, now town hall. An 1893fire took out the rest of the town.

Winthrop’s board sidewalkslead visitors to gold panningactivities, museums, parks,glass-blowing demonstrations,Old West photo studios, putt-putt golf, the oldest legal saloonin Washington and more.

Aside from the aesthetics ofthe town itself, Winthrop ispicturesque in its proximity tothe North Cascades, surroundedby forests and wilderness.Visitors can enjoy cross-countryskiing, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, river rafting, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, golfing, sight-seeing,
