Hon’ble Governor, Dr. K.K Paul addressed the gathering

on Foundation Day said that it is heartening to know that

the Uttarakhand Technical University is celebrating its

Foundation day today. India is witnessing the age of

science and technology. There is a huge demand for

technical education in modern age. Technical Education

imparts knowledge of specific trade, craft or profession.

This role of education institutions found it necessary to

redefine the end of education, which was to be in the main

stream of economic development and to ensure a place for

India in the community of prosperous nations. It was not

just an end, it was the dream of modern India, and

technical education was given the due importance with a

view to realizing that dream.

Most of the challenges faced today by our nation and our

hilly state can be resolved through research in Engineering

and Technology. I personally believe that technologist

should come forward with new ideas to resolve the issues

like, Disaster Management, Water Resource Management,

Tourism, Use of Solar Energy, Improvement in

Transportation and Development of Earthquake resistant

infrastructure.

I congratulate all the former Vice Chancellors (Prof V K

Tewari, Prof D S Chauhan and Prof V K Jain) for their

contributions they have made for the betterment of

technical education in the Uttarakhand State. I am sure

that they will continue further to help the University to

YOU CAN INVENT!’ – A Talk by Praveen Vettiyattil

(President, Sharda Solutions)

Praveen Vettiyattil, President, Sharada solutions,

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, delivered series of talks from

February 17th to 19th in the institute Seminar Hall. Praveen

Vettiyattil is on a mission to create a million inventors in

India by 2020.It's a talk that convinces that we are all born

violent inventors and will help reclaim the inventor in us.

“One should render the present so as to get a clearer and

better future, with the inculcation of ideas and solutions of

the problems around”, and as this is mentioned, he began

with the lecture.

“The world can change only through two things – War

and Invention”

The subtopics are mentioned below:

1. You can invent

2. Speed of learning - baby versus research industry

3. Pedal Powered centrifugal pump

4. Pedal powered water lifting machine

5. Why innovate in engineering versus other domains

6. How inventions prevent recessions and wars.

7. From a poverty powered world to an invention

powered world

8. Major Indian Inventions

He started the lecture with the introduction of problem

with the system – the way India works, and the question

that why Indians living in the U.S. accounts to more than

20% of the international papers filed in the U.S.A. and on

the other hand the dilapidated state of innovators in India?

The question that he aptly pointed out is quite very well

justified with the present outlook of the nation in terms of

the number of inventions, patents filed, and the average

research grant per patent. Though, however, there isn’t any

particular solution for this question, but the inculcation of

the creative approach in the children, and change in the

perspective of observing the children’s academic

performance would at-least make sure that the cravings for

the innovation wouldn’t die out. In his words, “We always

say, ‘As creative as a child, and not, as creative as a

group of Thermonuclear research scientists.’”

The speaker in the next part talked about the ideas, and

their origin. He put forth a 3-step approach towards stating

to think of inventing, which talks about leading a normal

life, and be receptive to and observant of problems, then

looking up on whether anyone has tried to solve the

problem. If not, just going ahead and solving it! One need

not have a creative mind to think about the different issues

that one faces, or might be facing, in the present and how

they would resolve them to ensure a better and prospective

future. For doing that, one has to have a vision and a

curious approach towards the essentialities of the life and

the things around.

As the speaker moved towards the conclusion, he tried to

emphasize the power of innovation and himself being a

mechanical engineer, urged everyone to be proud of their

Page 9: UTTARAKHAND TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY e …pdf.uktech.ac.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/e-Newsletter...UTTARAKHAND TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY e-NEWSLETTER An Official e-Newsletter of Uttarakhand

field of study and being an engineer. For everything other

than engineering could be established any day, but if

engineering and crave for the innovation is lost, nothing

could be established, very well, to the present state. And

with the message coming “Crave and Crave more for

curiosity, and never let die the urge to question, for these

are the essentials for a thinker and an inventor”, the

lecture was concluded.

Industrial visit helps to bridge the gap between classroom

and the real life world/practical experience. It is considered

one of the most tactical methods of teaching. To stimulate

students’ interest in learning, a one day industrial tour was

organized by Women Institute of Technology on 29th

February to Tehri Dam, as this is one place where students

from different branches could learn simultaneously. There

was an overwhelming response from 108 students of third

and final year Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics

Engineering students. The students were accompanied by

faculty and staff members of W.I.T. The buses were

flagged off from Parade Ground by Dr. Alaknanda Ashok,

Director W.I.T.

The students guided by a team of experts from T.H.D.C.

India Limited, visited the hydroelectric power plant, Tehri

dam which is one of the tallest in the world. The dam is a

260.5 metres high rock and earth-fill embankment,

installed with hydro capacity of 1,000 MW along with an

additional 1,000 MW of pumped storage hydroelectricity.

Students from different disciplines were exposed to

industrial process in operation with deeper practical

experience. Civil engineering students saw the real time

large scale construction of dam, the tunnels while the

electrical students benefitted from the technicalities

involved in hydroelectric generation. Mechanical students

understood the functioning of turbines and electronics

students learned how the plant is controlled electronically.

Overall it was a life time and very fruitful experience. Such

visit helps students to reinforce concepts learned in lecture

and laboratory sessions.
