Khaila-Rose Prior Project Officer, Human Resources Legal Aid NSW

“I was always someone that said that I never wanted to go to uni, it was not something I was ever interested in doing. What really appealed to me about this course was the fact that I could study and work at the same time. I know that in order for me to progress within my career I need a qualification, so I thought this degree would give me a really good underpinning to help me advance.

The projects that we’re working on are based on actual organisations out in the community. Last semester we worked with the Tribal Warrior Association here in Sydney and this semester we’re working with the Jack Thompson Foundation, an organisation based in Bundeena. We’re really lucky that we do have quite a lot of contact with the organisations that we’re working with, and we’re doing something that is relevant and not just based on theory.”

COURSE STRUCTUREStudents complete 6 modules, each comprising 4 subjects. The course incorporates project subjects in each of the modules which are designed to challenge, consolidate and thoroughly deepen students’ understanding of the core business functions, how they all interrelate, and are applied in the workplace or business settings.

Module 1The first module, Integrating Business Skills, introduces the various core business disciplines including accounting, finance, economics and marketing, in an interdisciplinary setting. The objectives of this module are to introduce students to the business landscape, the interrelationships of the various business functions and the contributions to the value of the firm and society more broadly.

The module also introduces the development of generic skills, including written, oral communication and team work skills.

Modules 2-5These modules develop business management skills that align directly with the core functions of an organisation, namely:

> the management of the organisation and organisational structure;

> the management of people and the development of human capital;

> the management and oversight of the organisation’s financial resources including sources of funding; and

> the management of its operations and supply chain including the consideration of financial and other operational risks an organisation may typically be faced with.

Module 6The final module, Managing Innovation, brings together the knowledge developed throughout the course in the context of new venture creation and entrepreneurial activity.

EXIT POINTSExit points have been designed for students who may be unable to complete the full bachelor’s degree. Upon successful completion of the first 3 modules, students may exit the program with a Diploma in Business Administration, or with successful completion of the first 4 modules, students may exit with an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration.

HOW THE COURSE IS TAUGHTThe BBA is structured as an intensive based program with students attending classes at UTS three times per semester for a week at a time.

It is expected that students will be highly independent and self-motivated learners able to maintain their study commitments while away from UTS.

Christian Hampson Regional Manager - Heritage Office of Environment and Heritage

“If you’re a person that wants to challenge yourself to do something for your community, but also has the motivation to learn new skills, you need to do this degree.

The coursework is challenging, but very practical and relevant. Because of my job as a manager already I’m able to bring things I learn back into my workplace. That’s what I like about it – it’s relevant to what I’m doing now and where I want to be in the future.”

Sonya Pearce Indigenous Programs Coordinator

“The Bachelor of Business Administration is the only accredited business course specifically designed for Indigenous people in an Australian university. The program has been set up so students take part in collaborative study with other Indigenous people where they are able to draw on their previous work experience and knowledge.

Students in the program are able to develop an understanding of business through both theory and practice. All modules are designed around a 'clinic' model where we work with real organisations to determine their business needs and then develop plans and strategies to help them address these needs. This gives our students strong practical, hands-on experience.”

Sonya is a Gooreng Gooreng woman with over 30 years’ experience in Indigenous education, employment, human rights and community and enterprise development. Sonya has a Diploma of Education (Aboriginal), Bachelor of Education (Adults), and Master of Education (Adults). She is currently in the final stages of her PhD which focuses on Aboriginal Women Entrepreneurship in NSW of which she has received an Australian Research Council (ARC) Indigenous Grant.
