Were the links relevant?

Did you get a lot of pornography or

irrelevant sites?

We’ll learn how to search properly later.



Search is simple: just type whatever comes

to mind in the search box, hit Enter or click

the Search button, and Google will search

the web for content that's relevant to your

search.

Really it’s a little more complex than that.

It’s also a lot more versatile and powerful.



We are going to learn to search partly

by experiment.

And by discussing our results together.

But I’ll also teach you some of the more

useful functions of GOOGLE first.

And get you started with the possibilities

of the search engines and tools.



But before we start learning to search

using GOOGLE . . .

We shall look at what else GOOGLE

Generally, all the words you put in the query

will be used.

Search is always case insensitive.

A search for vigo university is the same

as a search for Vigo University.

Generally, punctuation is ignored, including

@#$%^&*()=+[]\ and other special

characters.



If you're looking for a particular

company, just enter its name.

If you're looking for a particular concept,

place, or product, start with its name.

If you're looking for a pizza restaurant,

just enter pizza and the name of your

town.

Most queries do not require advanced

operators or unusual syntax.



Use the words that are most likely to

appear on the page.

Nosebleed (non-technical page)

Epistaxis (medical page)

Describe what you need with as few

terms as possible.

Where can I buy cheap cars?

cheap cars sales.



Choose descriptive words.

More unique words give better results.

Nurse

Midwife

The word must be the one generally used.

Telephone animal sounds.

Animal ringtones.



Phrase search ("")

Google will consider the exact words in that

exact order without any change.

Google already uses the order and the fact that

the words are together as a very strong signal.

Quotes are usually unnecessary.

Insisting on phrase search you might be missing

good results accidentally.

"Alexander Bell" will miss the pages that refer

to Alexander G. Bell.



Search within a specific website (site:)

Specify that your search results must come from

a given website.

haemolysis site:medline.com

only from medline - you do not need to

write WWW.

haemolysis site:org

only from governmental and official sites.



Operators

AND (Both terms must be present)

Child AND healthcare.

By default AND is added between words.

It is therefore not necessary to use

+ (Term must be present)

Forces GOOGLE to use the exact word and not a

synonym.



OR (Either term must be present)

Must be in capital letters.

NOT (Term must not be present)

Lets GOOGLE fill in the missing terms.

Search with GOOGLE and record the

following information:

Number of hits.

Number of sites related to our search

in the first 20 pages.

Number of sites with pornography



Use the search criteria given in the

following two slides.

At the end we shall discuss our results.

When you have finished try some of

your own criteria and record the results.

Then we shall look at a new concept.

In summary:-porno does not filter well as pornographic

pages do not declare themselves as such.

-sex removes legitimate scientific pages as the word sex is used in legitimate scientific literature.

-sexy filters well as this is a common search criteria for people looking for pornography.



+org filters well, but only gives government

sites. The information retrieved was

generally better.

-girls filters well, but may remove some

valid links.

A good filter might be:

Google scholar is an alternative to using MedLine, Trip database or other similar tools.

It is optimized for academic research.

It has some new Keywords for searching.

It can even inform you when new articles are published etc.
