1 Introduction

1.1 Presentation of the MGE SNMP-based solution

1.1.1 Network-dedicated solution: Solution-Pac / WAN

◗ Protection of your IT equipment by managing their shutdown in the event of an extended powerfailure,

◗ Notification of power quality events affecting your protected IT equipment,◗ Supervision of any UPS system connected to your IT network.

The components of the Solution-Pac / WAN suite include:◗ The SNMP agent (SNMP/Web Card or UM-Agent software): supervises the UPS, informs the UM-

Client of events occurring on the UPS by SNMP traps and manages UPS shutdowns and restarts.◗ UM-Client protects the workstation on which it is installed and informs administrators and users of

major events by network notification, e-mail, SMS or fax (with the Jericho alarm module underWindows).

◗ UM-Console (+) supervises and configures the SNMP agent and the UM-Client of the workstationon which it is installed.

◗ UM-Editor configures UM-Client and UM-Agent

The software components for each platform and the user manuals are supplied free-of-charge on theSolution-Pac CD or are available for download on the www.mgeups.com Web site, in the “Downloadarea” section.

1.1.2 Network supervision solution: Management-Pac

Management-Pac provides snap-in applications for popular NMS (Node Management System)systems such as HP OpenView, CA Unicenter, IBM Tivoli or Server Management System like HPInsight Manager 7.UM-Vision (Windows) enables supervision and configuration of SNMP agents and is compatible withmost NMS.

1.2 Presentation of SNMP/Web cards

MGE provides 2 different form factors for its SNMP/Web cards :◗ SNMP/Web Minislot card for UPS systems like the Evolution, EXtreme C, Pulsar EX,

Pulsar/Comet DX series.◗ SNMP/Web Transverse card for UPS systems like the Galaxy 3000, Galaxy PW, Pulsar and

Comet EXtreme series. Other MGE UPS systems (3-phase Comet, Galaxy, EPS 6000) can beremotely managed using the Multislot card expander.

SNMP/Web cards are SNMP agents that:◗ Enable acquisition of information on the operation status of the UPS systems,◗ Provide remote control of these systems by means of an ETHERNET network◗ From any SNMP administration station or Web browser.◗ They also supply alarms to the UM-Clients to trigger shutdown or other automatic actions for

protected servers.

3 Supervision / Administration via a Web browser

◗ On a computer equipped with a Web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape recommended),enter the previously initialised address (e.g.: http://172.17.23.28)

◗ The “UPS properties” home page is displayed.◗ Save this address in your Favourites, giving it a personalised name.

3.1.1 Optimising the performance of your browser

◗ To view status changes on the UPS in real time, the browser must be configured so that itautomatically refreshes all the objects on the current page.> Example on IE5.5:Tools menu/Web options/Parameters/ tick the Automatic box and validate.

◗ Menu character size can be configured. For an optimal and full view of the menu, configure thebrowser with the “Smaller“ option.> Example on IE5.5:Display menu/Text size/ select the Smaller box.

3.2 UPS

3.2.1 “UPS properties” page

◗ This page gives instant access to the essential information about your UPS. This page isautomatically refreshed every 10 seconds (by default). To change this value, go to the “System”page.

3.2.1.1 UPS zone: general information on the UPS.

◗ Picture and generic name of the UPS rangeNB: When using a UPS with dry-contact (i.e. “dumb”) communication, no picture or name isdisplayed, just the “2 contacts” text is displayed and only the following parameters are specified inthe UPS status zone:“Communication”“Power source”“Output”

◗ Customise the name of your system: “upsIdentName” object of the UPS MIB (RFC 1628)You can change this name on the “System” page.

◗ The “About your UPS” zone provides information on the UPS and the SNMP/Web card, inparticular, the model name and software version.

3.2.1.2 “UPS status” zone: essential information

◗ The various icons showing the status of the UPS are:

Utility power present

Battery operation

Loss of communication with the UPS

Battery fault

◗ “Communication”: indicates the status of the communication between the card and the UPS◗ “Power source”: indicates whether the power comes from the utility or from the UPS battery◗ “Batteries”: indicates whether the battery is being charged or discharged◗ “Output level”: indicates the power percentage used at UPS output◗ “Output”: indicates if the UPS output is protected

3.2.1.3 “Battery status” zone:

◗ “Bargraph”: Graphical display of the remaining battery charge (in percent).◗ “Battery level”: Remaining battery charge (in percent).◗ “Remaining backup time”: Estimation of the time remaining before UPS shutdown.

3.2.1.4 Subscription for alarm reception

◗ You can receive notification of the different alarms occurring on the UPS directly via your browser.Just click on the “Subscribe” button.

◗ Activation of this function is indicated by a pop-up window and by the button’s text label changingto “Unsubscribe”.

◗ This window can be closed whenever you wish. As soon as a new event occurs on the UPS, it isre-opened automatically as long as your browser remains open.

◗ To stop subscription, click on the “Unsubscribe” button. A warning message indicates the end ofthis subscription. The button text becomes “Subscribe” again.

Note 1:If the browser is closed, alarm notification is stopped, but the subscription request remains in memory.When the “Properties” page is viewed next, notification will be active again.Note 2:See the table of alarms generating notification in the appendix.Note 3:Alarm notification by the browser is independent of the protection function performed by the UM-Clientsoftware.

3.2.2 On-line help

On-line contextual help is available at the top of each page by clicking on the Help link, which isalways located in the top right corner. The help browser menu is identical to that of the card pages.

The Help page always opens a new window.

3.2.3 UPS weekly schedule

◗ Click on the “Weekly schedule” section of the menu.The weekly schedule enables the administrator to optimise power consumption or program a reboot ofthe protected equipment at a set time.

In a shutdown sequence, the UM Clients connected to the card are informed and ensure that eachmachine is shut down correctly before the UPS output is switched off.Up to 7 UPS shutdown sequences can be programmed in one week, with a minimum shutdown periodof 30 minutes.

Security: the administrator clicks on “Save” and enters his/her login / password to save any edits.

3.3 Logs

3.3.1 Measurements

Click on the “Measurements” section in the menu.

The following measurements are saved and time-stamped:◗ “Input voltage”: Value of the utility voltage supplying your UPS (average of 3 phases for UPSs

equipped with a 3-phase input)◗ “Input frequency”: Value of the utility frequency feeding your UPS◗ “Output voltage”: Value of the output voltage of your UPS (average of the 3 phases for UPSs with

a 3-phase output)◗ “Output load”: Value of the percentage of load at UPS output (Value of the most loaded phase for

3-phase UPSs)◗ “Battery capacity”: Percentage of charge available in the battery◗ “Remaining time”: Estimation of the remaining backup timeThe save frequency of these values is defined in the “System” page (60 seconds by default).Approximately 500 time-stamps are stored permanently on the card.

◗ “Save” button enables all saved values to be opened or saved in CSV format (compatible withExcel type spreadsheets)

◗ “Clear” button enables deletion of all records. The administrator must enter his/her login /password to validate this action.

3.4 Configuration

The parameters of this menu can only be modified after entering the “Login” and “Password”. Thefollowing screen is proposed automatically:

Login and password by default are: MGEUPS

Each field accepts up to 10 characters max.After entering the login and password, these identifiers remain active as long as the browser isopen, so you only have to enter them once.If the browser is closed, they will have to be re-entered.

Tick the “Save this password in your password list” box if you want to avoid systematic re-entry.

An error in either field results in systematic rejection of the requested action (save, page access,card reboot, etc.). After three unsuccessful attempts, the browser must be rebooted.These two fields do not travel “uncoded” on the IT network, they are encrypted with an MD5 typealgorithm, ensuring total confidentiality.

3.4.1 IP network

Click on the “IP network” section in the menu.

This menu enables the administrator to configure the network parameters of the card andauthorisation of the remote upgrade of the embedded system .

◗ IP address: The IP address of the SNMP/Web card (e.g.: 172.17.23.205).◗ Subnet mask: The mask of the sub-network of your network (e.g.: 255.255.255.0).◗ Gateway: The IP address of the gateway (e.g.: 172.17.1.24).◗ TELNET connection: Authorises (choose enable) remote connection with a terminal.◗ BootP/DHCP: Authorises configuration of network parameters with your BootP/DHCP server as

startup mode (choose enable) .

Card operation mode with the server: After all reboots, if this option is enabled, the card attempts torecover network parameters from the server for 10 sec. If there is no response from the server, thecard boots with the last parameters saved during the previous startup. The parameters are thosevisible on the page at the time of the modification.◗ Upgrade via the network: Authorises (choose enable) remote upgrading of the embedded

system on the card. Read the “Maintenance” section for more details.◗ Validate your configuration by clicking “Save”. The save is immediate.

Note: The card must be rebooted after any changes to these parameters.

3.4.2 System

Click the “System” section in the menu.This menu enables the selection of your preferences to display information on the home page.

◗ UPS contact: This text field is limited to 32 characters. Enter the name of the person responsiblefor UPS administration at IT network level and/or electrical maintenance. This field does notappear on any other Web page. By default, its value is “Computer Room Manager”.

◗ UPS location: Enter a description (limited to 32 characters) of the location of the UPS in yourinstallation (e.g. Computer room E1-C066). This text is displayed on the home page at the topright, above the name of the UPS. Its value by default is “Computer room”.

◗ Log interval: Value between 20 and 99999 seconds. Enables initialisation of the save period ofMeasurements, Events, System in the Log menu. Its value by default is 60 sec.

◗ Refresh rate: Value between 5 and 99999 seconds. Enables initialisation of the refresh rate of thehome page. Its value by default is 10 sec.

◗ Default language: Enables initialisation of the browser language for card connection.> Auto: Automatically displays the Web page texts in the same language as your browser. If the

SNMP/web card is not able to display the recognised language, the pages will be displayed inEnglish.

> English: Displays the Web page texts in English, regardless of the language of your browser.> French: Displays the Web page texts in French, regardless of the language of your browser.

Validate your configuration by clicking “Save”. The save is immediate. The browser must be rebooted for alarm notification to take account of a language change.

◗ “Reset communication” button: performs a remote reboot of the card without modifying itsconfiguration. This action is compulsory to take into account network parameters changes madeon the “IP network” page. This operation is made secure by Login and Password entry.

◗ “Factory reset” button: returns to the default configuration for all the card parameters.CAUTION: the IP address and all other parameters having been reinitialised, you may losecommunication with the card after clicking this button.This operation is made secure by Login andPassword entry.

3.4.3 Manager table (trap addresses)

Click the “Manager table” section in the menu.

This menu enables the addition of the supervision stations receiving traps in the list of managers andconfiguration of the trap type:

Up to 32 destinations can be managed by the card.

Note: It is not necessary to add the UM-Clients protecting your servers in this list as UM-Clients areautomatically added/deleted.

Select an entry in the list to modify the values in the edit zone at the bottom of the page.

◗ Device no. field: Use the “0” value for all manual entries.◗ NMS type field: Select the value corresponding to the type of NMS used. Possible choices:

> UM-Client> DEC-NetView> UM-View> D-View> HP-OpenView> Sun-SNM> Novel-NMS> IBM-NetView> Other> Autolearning

◗ Protocol field: Select the “SNMP V1” value to validate trap transmission or “invalid” to block thetraps.

◗ Max trap level field: enables selection of the alarm level for received traps. Selection of a givenlevel authorises transmission of all traps of a lower level. Possible choices (only levels 1 to 4 aremanaged):> 0> 1 - Critical> 2 – Severe> 3 – Warning> 4 - Informational> 5> 6> 7

◗ “Add entry” button: adds the record being edited to the list◗ “Delete entry” button: deletes the selected record◗ “Modify entry” button: enables modification of the selected record◗ “Save” button: Validates the edits made.This operation is made secure by Login and Password entry.

3.4.4 Access control

Click the “Access control” section in the menu.

This menu enables configuration of the different parameters enabling secure access to the card via abrowser or SNMP.

◗ Select one of the three possibilities.> Synchronise with computer time: Enables the date and time of your PC to be transferred to

the card. This transfer is made after clicking on the “Save” button. Time is not adjustedregularly, it is set at the time of the save.

> Synchronise with an NTP server: Enables connection with a time server, either available onthe company’s internal network or on the Web. This server communicates GMT time. The timezone of your geographic area must then be selected from the list. Connection is made with theserver and the date and time are set after clicking on the “Save” button. Time is constantlyupdated.

> Set manually: Enables initialisation of the date and time of the card with the values entered inthe Date and Time fields. The adjustment is made after clicking on the “Save” button.

Note 1:After clicking on the “Save” button, the selection is automatically repositioned on the “Synchronisewith computer time” option.Note 2:Day light saving time changes are not managed by the card, even in the case of connection with atime server.Note 3:Time drift is related to card electronics. 4 Supervision / Administration via SNMP

4.1 SNMP offer operation principle

UM-Client, on protected server boot, subscribes itself automatically to the SNMP agent (in themanager table) and sends the essential data:◗ IP address of the server on which it is installed, to be notified by the SNMP agent of any power

events (SNMP traps).◗ Time required to shutdown the server (UM-Client Shutdown Duration, configurable with the UM-

Editor utility, installed with UM-Client):The SNMP agent takes into account the longest shutdown time of all UM-Clients subscribed (whichis the Shutdown Duration of the SNMP agent) to manage UPS shutdown without affecting any ofthe connected UM-Clients.

In case of a major power event, UM Client receives the traps (SNMP messages) from the SNMP agentand regularly checks agent accessibility. The most important messages can generate actions and aresent back to the administrator and users via the network.When the server shuts down, UM-Client unsubscribes itself from the manager table (the “Protocol”field changes to “invalid”).

4.1.1 Shutdown criteria

During an extended power failure, three criteria may cause the server shutdown procedure to beinitiated. If several criteria are selected, the first criterion encountered will launch the shutdownprocedure.At the end of the shutdown procedure, when all servers have been shut down, the UPS may shutdown to avoid unnecessary discharge of its batteries, depending on its configuration.

4.1.1.1 Backup time before initiating the shutdown procedure (Shutdown timer)

When the UPS switches to battery, the SNMP agent starts the Shutdown Timer countdown andlaunches the system shutdown procedure at the end of the countdown.This value must be chosen so that users have time to complete their tasks and disconnect, withoutexceeding battery backup time.By default, this value is set to 30 minutes.Configuration with UM-Console(+), UM-Vision or SET SNMP

Note 1:UM-Client also manages its own Shutdown Timer (configurable with UM-Editor), triggered by receptionof the SNMP trap “Mains loss”.Note that if this criterion is selected to initiate system shutdown, automatic system reboot when poweris restored is not guaranteed (e.g. power restoration if only this system was shut down). Werecommend leaving this parameter at a value greater than the one of the Shutdown Timer of theSNMP agent.By default, this value is set to 31 minutes.

Note 2:For devices without UM-Clients (backup units, routers and other internetworking equipment,automated systems, etc.), in the case of extended backup time, the SNMP agent will launch a UPSshutdown at the end of the Shutdown Timer. To avoid this behavior, a Shutdown Timer value longerthan the maximum installation backup time must be programmed.

4.1.1.2 Initiating the shutdown procedure when the battery level is lower than: (Low BatteryLevel)

When the SNMP agent detects that the remaining backup time percentage is less than the configuredlevel, the shutdown sequence is started.By default, this value is set in the UPS.

Note:Certain types of UPS only accept pre-defined minimum battery level values (e.g. : 20% or 40% forCOMET and PULSAR EXtreme). Check the UPS documentation.

4.1.1.3 Shutdown when backup time is less than

When the SNMP agent detects that the percentage of backup time remaining is less than the valueset, the shutdown sequence is started.

4.1.1.4 Shutdown duration

Duration required for the systems protected by UM-Client to shut down (in seconds).

4.1.2 Individual outlet control

Some UPS models are equipped with outlets or group of outlets (typically 2), that can be controlled orprogrammed individually (while still remaining dependent on the main UPS control). MGE name forthis feature is PowerShare.Shutdown of the UPS systematically causes shutdown of the controlable outlets.

Depending on the UPS range, the following notation is used to mark these outlets:◗ Main outlet: Main or 1◗ Programmable outlet 1 1 or 2◗ Programmable outlet 2 2 or 3

4.1.3 Connecting a server protected by UM-Client to a controlled outlet

After connecting the server electrically to one of the controlled outlets, UM-Client must be informed ofthe outlet number to which it is connected.Start UM-Editor (installed with Solution-Pac / WAN), select the “Switchable plug” box and specify theoutlet number (1=main, 2 or 3) in the “Receptacle Number” field.

4.1.3.1 Load shedding or sequential shutdown

It is possible to optimise backup time by shutting down non-priority equipment or sequencing theshutdown of several devices.Two shutdown criteria are possible:1. Shutdown of outlets after a set battery back-up time (ShutOff Delay, programmable in UM-

Console, UM-Vision)2. Shutdown of outlets at a given battery discharge level (ShutOff Level, programmable in UM-

Vision)It is possible to specify values for both criteria. The first criterion reached will initiate server shutdown.

4.1.3.2 Sequential startup

It is possible to delay outlet power-on to reduce inrush currents on startup or to sequence the startupof several devices.Outlet startup after a given time is based on startup of the main outlet (Restart delay, programmable inUM-Console, UM-Vision)

4.2 The different server and UPS shutdown sequences

4.2.1 Extended power outage, shutdown initiated by the Shutdown Timer

During battery backup time, the Shutdown Timer of the SNMP agent is reached: after a user-definedbackup time period (UM-Console +, UM Vision), shutdown of all servers is initiated, followed by theUPS shutdown (depending on its configuration). The UPS restarts when utility power is restored(depending on its configuration).◗ Shutdown Duration: Maximum value of shutdown times of the UM-Clients subscribed to the card

and depending on the main UPS outlet. This value is updated each time a client subscribes/unsubscribes.

◗ Shutdown Duration 1 (2): Maximum value of shutdown times of the UM-Client subscribed to thecard and dependent on outlet 1 (2). This value is updated each time a UM-Client dependent onoutlet 1 (2) subscribes /unsubscribes.

Note: During battery operation, these values are not updated.

DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration ProtocolThis IETF protocol enables remote, automatic, self-configuration of the IP addresses of a workstation.

GatewayInterconnection equipment between networks with different conventions, to enable communicationbetween them

HTML(HyperText Markup Language) Language used to describe hypertext pages on the web.

IPInternet Protocol. Network layer protocol in the TCP/IP stack offering a no-connection inter-networkservice . The IP protocol offers functions for addressing, service type specification, fragmentation andre-assembling and security. Defined in RFC 791.

Manager:Software enabling querying or updating of MIB from one or more agents and able to receive traps fromthese agents.UM-Client and UM-Console are examples of managers.

MD5Message Digest 5. Algorithm producing an output message from an input message of arbitrary length,in the form of a replica or summary 128 bit message. Intended for digital signature applicationsrequiring large files to be compressed in total security before being coded with a private key, using apublic key algorithm, like RSA.

MIB MANAGEMENT INFORMATION BASE- Group of software commands to control and administrate a device through the network. Each type ofdevice (server, hub, PC, UPS, etc.) has its own MIB– The IETF has proposed a standard MIB for each group of devices (hubs, for example) to simplifyadministration if they come from different suppliers

Programmable outlet (controlled outlet):Outlet that can be remote-switched on or off. In Solution-Pac / WAN, the UM-Console+ or UM-Clientcomponents enable management of such outlets.

Solution-Pac / WAN:Set of software components (UM-Console(+), UM-Client, UM-Agent) enabling protection of ITequipment connected to the TCP-IP/SNMP network.

Subnet mask:Mask of bits used to identify and differentiate the network address and the equipment address in an IPaddress.Normally, the mask is automatically determined by the class of address, which defines in a uniquemanner the network part/equipment part division of the IP address.- Class A: internet address: 255.0.0.0.- Class B: internet address: 255.255.0.0.- Class C: internet address: 255.255.255.0.

TCP/IPTransmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. Common name of a series of protocols developed bythe DOD in the US to help build Internet networks throughout the world.

TelnetInternet protocol used for terminal emulation, i.e. enabling a computer to connect with a server as if itwas a simple terminal locally connected to this server.

Trap (SNMP)This term describes an event that affects an MIB variable. Traps are sent to the manager, which isprogrammed to perform specific tasks upon reception of the traps.

UM-ClientUM-Client is a software package (SNMP manager) that uses the information sent by the agentdedicated to the MGE UPS in order to inform users of the computer of the power quality status.In case of a power failure, UM-Client triggers a graceful shutdown procedure at the end of a presetbattery runtime.
