Plainville High School
Marching Band
By Kevin Pham
The High School Marching Band attended the High
Plains Marching Festival at FHSU on October 24th and
received an Excellent Rating (II+) in festival
competition. In previous years, the band would only
attend the festival to watch other schools perform;
however, this year was the band’s first appearance
performing in the festival.
Bands attending the festival are rated by six
adjudicators who are focused on specific elements of a
marching show. There were two judges for Music
Performance, one judge for Marching and Maneuvering,
one judge for General Effect, one judge for Percussion,
and one judge for Auxiliary. Combining the scores will
determine the overall rating for each band. Percussion
and Auxiliary Scores are not included in the final score
of the band.
The students have been working hard since the
beginning of the school year. Through the extra early
morning rehearsals and time during class, each
member’s dedication on making the band sound and
look great have been paying off. For years to come, the
band will continue to work hard to achieve higher goals
and they will continue to make Plainville Proud. Go

Kindergarten is “Kicking Off” a Great Year!
By Mrs. Hovis
Greetings from Mrs. Hovis’ kindergarten class!
We are so excited about learning this year! With 13
eager-to-learn students in our class, there is never a dull
moment! We have already learned so many new and
exciting things to help “grow our brains”. We have also
worked very hard on following the rules, learning about
how to treat others, and our daily kindergarten routine.
Each day we focus on many new concepts. We
have learned about numbers and quantities in our math
curriculum. In reading, we are learning about sounds
that the letters make, blending those sounds to make
words, rhyming, and counting the sounds and syllables
we hear in words. We have also been reading, reading,
reading!! Learning about how good readers think about
characters and setting, retell the stories they read,
compare and contrast details in the story, and classify
information are just a few of the concepts we have
already begun learning about this year.
As November begins, we can say the first
quarter has flown by for us in kindergarten for sure! As
the saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun!”
We would agree! Kindergarten is a great place to learn
and play! Stop by and see us anytime, we are always
excited to show everyone what “SMARTIES” we are!
By Krista Latta
I am so excited to be back this year! We have a lot
going on right now and the year will only get busier.
The high school choir has sung the national anthem at
two football games this year. There are
five high school students auditioning for KMEA district
and state choir at the beginning of November, so we
wish them the best of luck! We have one junior high
student singing in the Junior High Choir at Hays High
School along with other students from around the
district. The high school will be singing at MCL on
November 7th at Trego, we have preparing for this since
the beginning of the school year. The junior high/high
school will also have their Christmas program on
Monday, November 28th in the auditorium after Home
for the Holidays. The high school choir will also be
preparing for contest in April and will be having their
Spring Concert on Monday, May 1st, which will include
the art viewing from Mrs. Wells’ students, along with
singing at Baccalaureate and Graduation in May. The
junior high will have contest in February and will also be
singing at 8th Grade Promotion in May.
The elementary students are busy preparing for their
Christmas Concert on Monday, December 5th in the
auditorium. We have a rock ‘n’ roll Christmas Concert
with all kinds of movement and other surprises, so
please join us for that night. They will also have a
Spring Concert on Monday, May 8th. We have been
doing a reward chart for the students who do well each
week and then a big drawing at the end of the nine
weeks for a chance to win a prize. The 4th/5
th/6
th graders
will be learning recorders in January.
This school year I have added a beginning guitar
class, which will play at our concert on November 28th
and the concert on May 1st. This is a class for 7
th/8
th
graders with one year or less of guitar. We have been
learning a few basic chords and the notes on the guitar.
We have been talking about proper technique when
playing the guitar and learning how to play with a pick.
I thank you for your support of the music program
and let me know if there is anything you would like the
choirs to sing at in the community because we are
always looking for places and people to perform for.
I hope you enjoy our various performances
throughout the year and I look forward to seeing
everyone at our first concerts of the year!
