Up in the air againCommentary

Photo courtesy of Ruth Sharp Hummel

Pilot Robert Zirpolo and Ruth Sharp Hummel took aplane ride over Plainville. Hummel said she’d do it,even if it meant squeezing in and out of the tiny planeagain.

A humorous lookat a recent flightBy Ruth Sharp HummelSpecial to The Citizen

When Robert Zirpolo, myballoonist friend, called toask if I’d like to fly the nextmorning. Why, of course.

My only question was,“What are you flying?”

Turned out to be a tinyblue and white Cessna 172that I have seen around fre-quently.

Never having been in astiny a plane before, I didn’trealize how tight a squeezeit would be. Large gal, small

plane – getting into thatback seat almost made mequit. Then men tried to help, but the parts that neededpushing were off limits.

I did make it and enjoyedthe flight. A young man inthe front seat was takingphotos of the Relay for Lifegathering in Norton Park.We flew circles around thearea a number of times.

Then Robert flew over“Hummelhaus,” but it washard to see with the bigtrees around it.

Upon landing, I had thesame problem in reverse –now I have a personal in-sight into how toothpaste

feels when squeezed from atube.

I’d go again in a flash, butI must say I prefer balloonsor ‘copters.

At library, kids encouraged to dream big and readBy Crystal MaldonadoThe Plainville Citizen

There’s nothing like a pup-pet show to give kids the gig-gles.

The Plainville Public Li-brary held its summer read-ing kick-off program June 21with a dessert theater – apuppet show followed by cel-ebratory cake.

More than 150 partici-pants showed up to take apeek at the puppets and toregister for the program, which is held annually at thelibrary to encourage chil-dren to read throughout thesummer.

“There was lots of laugh-ter at our kick-off,” said Su-san Rooney, children’s librar-ian at the Plainville library.“We presented one of ourown puppet shows. Tim Mol-nar, now our reference li-brarian, enjoys creating‘fractured fairy tales.’ Thechildren’s staff is very tal-ented with voices and creat-ing props.”

Although library eventsare usually well attended,Rooney said this year’s kick-off party had the largest at-tendance since she joined thePlainville staff three yearsago.

“I’m always impressedwith the participation inPlainville compared to othertowns I’ve worked in,” shesaid.

Plainville Public Libraryjoins scores of other li-braries across the nation forthe Collaborative SummerLibrary program, which be-gan in 1987. This year’stheme is “Dream big…Read!” but the mission is thesame: to encourage studentsto enjoy literature and tocontinue developing their in-dependent reading skillsover the summer.

“Children who read dur-ing their summer break re-tain those hard-earned skillsthey worked on all year –skills in reading comprehen-sion, writing, vocabulary, spelling and grammatical de-

velopment,” Rooney said. It’s not just children who

are encouraged to read –teens and adults can get inon the program, too.

“We have a weekly rafflefor our teen patrons and of-fer family oriented enter-tainment throughout the

summer,” Rooney said. The library can see as

many as 400 participants, said Library Director PeterChase.

Sponsored by the Friendsof the Plainville Public Li-brary, this year’s summerreading program comes with

auxiliary events, includingcraft making, a musical sto-ry performance by Al De-Cant and a talent show forthe students involved in theprogram.

Special to The Citizen

At last week’s PlainvilleHigh Schoolgraduationceremony, Iaddressedthe Class of2012 regard-ing the com-mitmenttheir com-munity hasmade to them through edu-cation and reminded them ofthe obligation they have togive back to the community.

I explained that throughtheir hard work and com-mitment to earning a highschool diploma they had al-ready begun giving back toPlainville.

The American Associa-tion of School Administra-tors recently facilitated theopportunity for PlainvilleCommunity Schools andother school districts acrossthe United States to assessthe impact of 2012 localgraduates on their respec-tive local economies.

Information relative tothe Plainville High SchoolClass of 2012 was assessedusing a model created byEconomic Modeling Special-

ists Inc., an economics firmspecializing in socioeconom-ic impact tools. According toAASA Assistant Director ofPolicy, Analysis & Advocacy,Noelle Ellerson, at the heartof the model used for thisanalysis is the well-docu-mented fact that high schoolgraduates earn on average, more money than theirpeers who do not earn adiploma. Further, the extramoney earned by graduatesis being spent and investedin local communities.

As a result of this exer-cise, a number of datapoints about Plainville’sClass of 2012 were identi-fied:

Collectively, this singleclass of Plainville HighSchool graduates are expect-ed to earn as much as $2.7million more in an averageyear compared to their like-ly earnings had they notearned a high school diplo-ma

By the midpoint of theircareers, these new gradu-ates, combined, will likelypurchase homes totaling invalue as much as $12 mil-lion more than what theywould have spent without adiploma

Class of 2012 graduateswill likely spend up to an ad-

ditional $200,000 in vehiclepurchases during an aver-age year

The spending and invest-ments made by these gradu-ates, combined, will likelybe enough to support asmany as 10 new jobs in thePlainville area and increasethe gross regional productby as much as $2.2 millionby the time they reach theircareer midpoints

As a result of increasedwages and higher levels ofspending, federal, state, andlocal tax revenues are ex-pected to grow by as muchas $1 million during an aver-age year

For the majority of ourgraduates who will be con-tinuing their education afterhigh school, the economicbenefits to them and thiscommunity are more thanthree times as staggering.

Communities support ed-ucation because education isan undeniably positive in-vestment in any communi-ty’s future. By taking advan-tage of the opportunitiesprovided to them in thePlainville CommunitySchools, our graduates havemade that investment payoff – a win-win for all.

“Remember: Once a BlueDevil, always a Blue Devil.”

Chairwoman KathyPugliese spoke on behalf ofthe Town Council to congrat-ulate the students and play-fully remind them to callhome every so often, whileSuperintendent of SchoolsJeffrey Kitching said theyshould be proud of their suc-cesses.

But it was a speech fromBarbara Willard, who ad-dressed the crowd on behalfof the Board of Education, that made the crowd teary.

Willard, mother of this

year’s salutatorian, Katie, said she had been wary ofhow quickly her daughter’ssenior year in high schoolhad been passing until shecame across a photo she’dtaken nearly 18 years ago inGuangzhou, China.

In 1994, Willard and herhusband traveled to Chinawith 10 families to meet theirnewly-adopted daughters. The Willards were intro-duced to Katie, one of twogirls who’d spend fivemonths together in the samefoster home.

Two weeks later, as theWillards were getting readyto return to the U.S. withKatie, the two girls – just sev-

en months old – reached outto one another and heldhands.

“Even at their young age, they seemed to know thatthey were about to be sepa-rated,” she said, getting emo-tional. “But whether by fateor divine intervention, 18years later, Katie and Mayare headed to the sameschool in Washington, D.C.,living just one block fromone another. It wasn’tplanned.”

The crowd burst into ap-plause before Willard couldfinish her speech.

“It wasn’t planned,” shesaid again, once the clappingdied down. “But that’s how

life works sometimes.”The graduation took a

lighthearted turn when theband, including seniors intheir cap and gown, took amoment to play “Touch Me”by Jim Morrison.

Marcquille Johnson, LillyBosco, Chris Kuzia andTabitha Arnold recited po-ems about the Class of 2012’sfour years at school, refer-encing events at school andfrom pop culture.

Alexis Rodriguez, valedic-torian, spoke last, and admit-ted he hadn’t finished hisspeech until the previousnight.

“I couldn’t bring myself tofinish this speech and, at the

same time, finish my highschool career,” he said.

But then, he rememberedthe story of Peter Pan (one ofhis favorites) – the tale of theboy who can never grow up.Although most studentswould probably enjoy stayingtheir current age, he said, Pe-ter Pan’s story is actuallyquite tragic. Unable to growup, Peter Pan is constantlyleft behind by everybody hecares about, constantly wait-ing for the next group of chil-dren to show up. Peter Pan,often, is alone.

“I realized I would not begoing through this transitionalone. I would not be left be-hind,” he said. “The future isnot something to escape, butrather, something you facethrough your doubt and inse-curity. […] The future is inour hands now, and only wecan decide where to go fromhere.”

Heat, hugs and happiness

Plainville High School’s Class of 2012 didn’t let the sweltering heat get to them – they graduated June 20, allsmiles. Speeches were given by valedictorian Alexis Rodriguez and salutatorian Katie Willard, as well as Prin-cipal Steven LePage, Superintendent Jeffrey Kitching, Town Council Chairwoman Kathy Pugliese and Board ofEducation member Barbara Willard. Later, the graduates spent the night at Wheeler YMCA for Project Gradua-tion, where students played blackjack and raced in bounce houses.

Sports Rewind: Devils started the school year in style

Photos by Joe Giuliani

By Nick CarrollThe Plainville Citizen

The Citizen is taking alook back at the year inPlainville High School ath-letics, a year when champi-onships were claimed, histo-ry was made and recordswere broken.

This week …. Fall 2011:The Plainville High

School boys soccer teamfell a bit short of its ulti-mate goal but the Blue Dev-ils turned in a memorablecampaign nonetheless.

The locals rolled up arecord of 14-3-3, andclaimed their secondstraight Central Connecti-cut Conference South Divi-sion crown.

The Blue Devils wouldearn the seventh seed in theCIAC Class M state tourna-ment and knocked off Gris-wold (4-0), Watertown (2-1)and Windham Tech (4-3 inovertime) to earn a date

with No. 3 Suffield in thesemifinals.

Plainville would lose tothe eventual state champs,2-0.

Coach Tim Brown toldhis Blue Devils to “holdtheir heads up” followingtheir season-ending loss toSuffield.

“You’re in the Final Fourof the state. There was eightteams before — 16, 32. Andthere were kids that didn’tmake it. You can’t hold yourheads down and think wedidn’t achieve what wewanted to achieve when wewalk off this field in a semi-final,” said Brown. “Youcan’t lose sight of the factyou’ve had a stellar season.”

During the season, seniorDaquan King becamePlainville soccer’s all-timescoring leader.

The Plainville HighSchool girls soccer teamearned a spot in the CIACClass M state tournament.

The Lady Blue Devils’ staywas brief, however.

The PHS girls garneredthe 19th seed in Class M andfell to 14th seed Waterford, 4-0, in the opening round.

The locals ended the yearwith a mark of 9-7-1.

“It was a very, very goodseason,” Plainville coachLeszek Wrona said. “It wasan enjoyable season for meworking with those girls.

“We achieved because thegirls had confidence.”

The Lady Blue Devilshave qualified for the statetournament eight years in arow.

The Plainville HighSchool football team wasunable to make it back-to-back trips to the state play-offs. The Blue Devil griddersran up a record of 5-5 andwere shut out of the play-offs.

If the locals generatedone more win, they wouldhave given Plainville foot-ball back-to-back winningseasons for the first time in35 years.

A highlight of the seasonfor the Blue Devils was a 43-22 rout of Platt-Meriden inwhich several PHS offensiverecords were set.

Also, during the season,senior kicker Nick Moshierbecame Plainville’s all-timeleader in point-after conver-sions.

“We’ve been competitiveall year, which was my goalwhen I came here,” said PHSsecond-year coach ChrisFarrell.

For just the second timein 10 years, the PlainvilleHigh School volleyballteam punched its ticket tothe postseason. The LadyBlue Devils earned the 22ndseed in the CIAC Class Mstate tournament and wereknocked out by No. 11 Foran-Milford, 3-0, in Round 1.

Plainville ended the yearwith a mark of 9-10.

“I love my team, and wehad some great moments onthe court this season, beat-ing a few teams that we hadnot beaten in recent memo-ry,” said PHS coach Steve

Compson.“We also played very

poorly on other nights,” hecontinued. “I guess we werea bit of a yo-yo team — upand down, up and down.Once or twice it felt like wewere going around theworld and others like wewere at the end of ourstring.”

Sweeping the season se-ries with their old foeBerlin was certainly one ofthe highlights for the LadyBlue Devils.

Represented by nine ath-letes, the Plainville HighSchool girls swim teamlanded in 15th place at theCIAC Class S state champi-onships.

The Lady Blue Devils, attimes competing with asfew as 11 athletes, still man-aged to roll up a plus-.500regular season record of 8-6,which included a seven-meet win streak.

“These guys, they justsurprised me this wholeyear,” PHS coach RandyDoucette said of his troops.“This whole year was just athrill a minute. Every timewe had a meet they justwent beyond my expecta-tions. They were reallysomething.”

Paced by four all-confer-ence performers, thePlainville High School boyscross country team placeda solid second in the SouthDivision at the Central Con-necticut Conference cham-pionship meet.

Course conditions weresoggy that day.

“Top to bottom, every kidraced the conditions welland nobody got discouragedfrom the slow conditions,”PHS coach Shaun Berardsaid.

The Blue Devils went onto finish 11th at the CIACClass M state meet.

It’s very early in the sea-son, but the Plainville Post33 American Legion base-ball team already hasreached a cross-roads.

Plainville manag-er Jim Tufts urgedhis troops to do somesoul-searching fol-lowing an 8-0 defeatat the hands of He-bron Sunday night.

“This is one of thosepoints where we have to askourselves: ‘how do we wantto go about this season,’”Tufts said. “I told them, wecan roll over after a gamelike this, or we can step upand play like I know theycan play.”

The good news for Post 33is that, even after falling toHebron, they owned a plus-.500 record of 4-2 in Zone 7.

So far, West Hartford,

Newington and RCP are thecream of the Zone 7 crop.“Hopefully we can get intothe mix,” said Tufts.

Brian Dostaler took theloss against Hebron. He

threw well enoughto win, however. “Hepitched very well,”said Tufts. “When hecame out of thegame in the sixth in-ning we were down4-0. And I would sayat least three out of

the four were unearnedruns. We got a little sloppydefensively.”

Dostaler was replaced byTyler Favreau, who sawPlainville through to theend.

The shutout loss was theback-end of a double-headerwith Hebron. In Game 1,Post 33 prevailed 2-0. TylerGuimond went the distancein that one to earn the win.

“Guimond looked great,”said Tufts. “He got into a lit-

tle bit of trouble here andthere, but he worked himselfright out of it every time.

“The reason why he wasin trouble a few times wasbecause we had some mentallapses on defense; but noth-ing horrible. We were goodenough to win.”

Clinging to a 1-0 lead overHebron, Chris Kuzia tripled

in the sixth and was broughthome on a squeeze bunt byErik Perrotti to seal the dealfor Plainville.

Tufts said Marc DeMarti-nis has been Post 33’s mostconsistent bat man. Also, the coach is pleased to re-port that his team’s college-age guys continue to shakeoff the rust they accumulat-

ed during a year away fromthe game.

“It seems like they’restarting to get there rightnow,” Tufts said of the veter-ans. “We’re seeing glimpsesof how they played last year.Things are starting to getbetter. They’re starting tomix in with the other kids. Ithink we’ll be fine.”

Junior Legion club improvingHeading into this week, the Plainville Post 33 Junior American Legion baseball team

owned a record of 3-4 in Zone 7, which put it in third place.“The zone is very competitive, with everybody battling in close games,” said Plainville

manager Jason Bukowski. “A lot of pitching duels to start the summer.”Post 33 is led on the mound by Brett Snowden, Brian Dostaler and Tyler Favreau. After a slow start at the plate, Bukowski said his club is beginning to come around with

the bats. Plainville’s leading hitters are Kyle Beloin, Cody Charneski and Tyler Pina.Bukowski’s 17-man roster includes 12 guys from Plainville High School’s 2012 state

championship club, “which will prove pivotal down the stretch of this season,” said thecoach.

Still, just how violent-ly gridiron competitors canhit each other has rightlybecome a major topic of de-bate in recent years in theNational Football League.New, appropriate regula-tions regarding concus-sions seek to protect play-ers’ long-term health. Thiscomes even before a jointlawsuit filed June 7 by ap-proximately 2,000 formerNFLers which alleges that,in decades past, league offi-cials concealed from ath-letes the extensive risks ofrepetitive head injuries.

Interestingly, not all NFLparticipants agree with thelawsuit. Despite knowing

full well the inherent dan-gers, many current and for-mer players have arguedthat the league should notrestrict harder hits. Vio-lence is an integral part ofthe game. Players on of-fense commonly attempt toknock away defenders togain additional ground ingames won and lost over afew yards. Moreover, force-ful tackling benefits the de-fense, limiting extra yardsafter initial hits, creatingturnovers and making ball-handlers worry about thenext tough blow. And oddsare that no ardent NFL fanwould be in favor of watch-ing a less-physical product.

But evidence has mount-ed that many professionalfootballers will suffer a life-time of mental-health prob-lems post-retirement. Con-

tinual head trauma fromcountless in-game collisionsleaves these men at the mer-cy of injured brains.

Just last month, formerall-pro linebacker JuniorSeau - whose personal lifewas one of community serv-ice, not psychological insta-bility - killed himself. Fami-ly and medical sources al-ready have blamed recentdepression caused by a ca-reer’s worth of concussions, injuries he’d simply shakeoff, then return to the field, rather than taking suitablemedical leaves.

The larger problem hereis that, apparently, nobodywas educating Seau and hispeers about the need to con-valesce after inner-craniumafflictions. Only in the lastfew seasons has the NFLmandated that concussedplayers must miss time.

This is a necessary step inthe right direction. Howev-er, that vital safety changesjust occurred in a leagueoriginally formed in the1920s is repugnant.

The NFL must contendwith an uphill legal battledue to a history of inade-quate concussion guide-lines. Thus, sport adminis-trators likely will limit vio-lent hits even further. Buthow soft is too soft? At whatpoint does the product suf-fer due to additional anti-ag-gression measures?

Either way, this ongoingNFL issue represents aclear lesson for all areayouth sports leagues, foot-ball or not. If a young ath-lete displays concussion-like symptoms, coachesmust bench that player im-mediately, and allow themextended time off. Other-wise, echoing Seau’s mis-handling, team leaderschance allowing anothersportsperson to face an un-certain mental-health fu-ture due to concussionshandled improperly in theirpast.
