Before you begin: carefully read themanual and try (without using glue) tomount the components, in order tofamiliarise yourself with the procedureof construction.

Your kit contains all the necessarycomponents for assembling an USBAltimeter. Read this manual carefullybefore starting construction. Thisproduct can be constructed withouttechnical expertise. Care andaccuracy are of utmost importance. You will need some simple tools, suchas a small star-shaped screwdriver, ahobby knife, some pliers, a 1/6” (4mm) drill, a small file, insulatingadhesive tape and glue suitable forplastic model kits.

Be very careful when using the hobbyknife! Take good care of the amount ofglue you apply and to which areas youapply it. Glue for plastics is essentiallya solvent. Excessive use can damagethe exterior of the instrument. Check ifall components are included. Duringpacking, the contents of theconstruction kit have been inspectedseveral times.

Construction kits come without awarranty!

In case you need a replacement part, you can order them from our websiteentering the part number in yourshopping cart. Parts are only availableas replacement parts!

Carefully tap shaft 107063 into cap107021 until it blocks.

Place component107063/107021 as you haveassembled onto the rotary encodershaft (part no. 107008). There is asmall indentation in the rotary encodershaft. The opening of component107021 contains a small ridge, whichfits exactly into this indentation. Makesure ridge and indentation fitcompletely.

Mount component 107020 tocomponent 107008 using just a littleglue, making sure no glue comes intocontact with the rotary encoder, withthe rotary encoder shaft or withcomponent W107063/107021.

There are 2 servos supplied. One modified servo (unpacked, partno. 104002) and one normal servo(packed in a box, part no. 104001).Take the normal servo out of the boxand mark it so that you can distinguishbetween the two products at any latermoment. Now take the normal servoand turn the mounted white plasticwheel carefully and slowly clockwiseuntil it stops. Remove the white plasticwheel(s) (without moving the shaft ofthe servo!) and save the small blackscrew(s). You will need it later.

Enlarge the left lower hole of thefront ring by using a 6.5 mm. drill(0.26").

Place optical 107140 into front ring107003 by pressing it down andcement it by sparingly applying gluefor model aircraft kits to the back ofthe front ring, in the edge whereoptical and front ring connect. Notethat the optical has a recessed edge. This allows the optical to be insertedin the front ring in such a way that theoptical comes a little forward to thefront of the front ring.

Connect the rotary encoderassembly connector onto the PrintedCircuit Board as shown in thepicture. The wires of the rotaryencoder assembly can be coloredWhite, Black, Red or Yellow, Red,Black (depending on the productionseries). The connector should be positionedonto the PCB in such a way that theYello or White wire from the rotaryencoder connects close to the squarePCB and the round PCB.

Now connect the servos to thePCB. The normal servo should beconnected to S2 and the modifiedservo to connector S1. The yellowwire of the servo connectors shouldbe closest to the PIHER sensors.

The board 107094 contains 4 so-called position sensors with the textPIHER printed on it.These sensors are used in pairs. Oneon one side of the board and onedirectly opposite on the other side ofthe board. The inner ring of this PIHER sensorhas a little notch (see arrow), whichindicates the position of the internalmechanics. It is of utmost importance that thePIHER-pairs are properly aligned.Use the shaft of component 107024and slide it into the center of thePIHER sensors. Now turn slightly PIHER sensoron both sides so that the little notchpoints to the of the board andalign the center so that the shaft ofcomponents 107024 and 107023 canslide through the PIHER sensorseasily. components 107024 and 107023 isfurther explained in the next pictures.

Mount plate 107016 onto theelectronics board 107094, using thepositioning notches as shown in thepicture. Do not use screws yet.

Insert gear wheels 107024 (longershaft) and 107023 (shorter shaft) intothe position on the plate 107016 asshown in the picture.Be careful! The flattened sides of theshafts should move easily into theproperly aligned Pihers!! This is ofutmost importance!Make sure the PIHER positioners areproperly aligned as indicated in thepicture 11. Once the shafts of gearwheels 107024 and 107023 are inposition, you can carefully checkwhether they can twist freely.

Using superglue, cement caps107025 onto the gearwheel shafts.TAKE NOTE: Under no circumstancesshould the PIHER positioners comeinto contact with glue! It is advised toput a very tiny drop at the top of theshafts of the gear wheels 107024 and107023 and then press the caps107025 onto the shafts.

Mount plate 107016 onto the PCBusing screw 107098.

Unfasten two diagonally placedlong screws from each of the servocasings as indicated in the picture.Keep the little screws from the servoshafts in a safe place.

Cut the ears from theas indicated in the drawing.

Place the servos intolower casing 107006 as indicated inthe drawings. Use the screws youpreviously unscrewed from the servosto mount them into position. Takenote: do not wind the screws tootightly! It's easy to damage the thread. The normal servo is position A and themodified servo on position B.

Position the plate with circuitboard onto the lower casing, andguide out the rotary encoder assemblyand the light between the casing andthe circuit board. Mind the properpositioning of the plate. Use the

positioning notch to find the rightposition.

The lower casing has mountingribs which facilitate the small squarePCB. When mounted properly, theUSB connector and switch is visiblefrom the bottom side of the lowercasing. The USB connector top shouldbe at the same level as the lower casebottom when perfectly aligned. Whiledoing this, make sure the superfluouswiring of lamp and servo do not touchany moving parts. If necessary usesome adhesive tape to sticksuperfluous wires to the bottom of thecasing.

Place gearwheel 107022 ontoinner shaft 107063 and use superglueto cement the gearwheel. Onlysuperglue can be used, since the gearwheel is made from nylon. Apply theglue to component 107063.

Check if component107058 can turn freely on the topmostsection of outer shaft 107060.

If this is not the case, use a rolled-up piece of fine sandpaper to widenthe opening in component 107058, incase component 107058 does notturn freely on component 107060. It isabsolutely necessary that part 107058turns freely on part 107060 withoutany friction!! Remove all dust prior tocontinue assembly.

Place gearwheel 107022 ontocomponent 107063 and cement itusing superglue (the gear wheel ismade from nylon so glue for modelkits does not work properly here).Apply the glue to component 107063.

Place bearing 107057 into theplate and press it down. Usesuperglue to mount it.

Insert component 107022/107022(inner shaft and gearwheel) intobearing 107057, making sure theinner shaft aligns with the modifiedservo.

Insert shaft 107062 into plate107016 as shown in the picture. Pressit tight until it stops.

Place one gearwheel

109102 over the metal gearwheelshaft with the smaller gearwheel sideup.

Place central shaft 107062over inner shaft 107063. Whilelowering shaft 107062, you need tobend shaft 107063 a little to the sidein order to pass the gear wheel107024 with the gear wheel from shaft107062.

Lower PCB 107068onto the main PCB 107094 with thesmall connector facing towards thecenter of the instrument through thesquare hole of plate 107016 andpress it in the direction of the center ofthe instrument.

Secure PCB 107068 by pressingthe PCB support 107069 behind thesmall PCB 107068 into the hole ofplate 107016.

Now place the 2nd gearwheel (part no.109102) over the metalgearwheel shaft with the smallergearwheel part up.

. Place the outer shaft107060/107022 over central shaft107062, making sure the gearwheelsconnect properly and smoothly. Whilelowering shaft 107060/107022 youneed to bend shaft 107062 a little tothe side in order to pass the gearwheel 107024 with the gear wheelfrom shaft 107060+107022.

Place the upper casing107052 onto the lower casing, use thelittle notch for proper positioning, whileguiding the rotary encoder and lightbulb up through the upper casing.

Mount the light bulb on the inside. The light bulb needs to protrude 0.1”(2.5 mm) from the edge.

Place lower faceplate107056 onto the upper casing. Thencarefully press the gear wheel with thelong shaft 107061 into the opening inthe standard servo axis wherenormally the screw is mounted. Thisneeds to be done with great care!

Position the combinedinches and millibar pressure scale107058 exactly as indicated in the

Now place the 10.000 ft indicator107064 exactly as shown in theillustration and press it gently down.Do not use glue!

Then place the 1.000 ft indicator107066 as shown in the illustrationand press it down gently. Do not useglue!

Finally place the 100 ft indicator107065 as shown in the illustrationand press it down gently until inposition. Do not use glue!Your assembly should look likeillustration 52.

Mount the rotary encoderassembly 107008 into the earlierprepared front ring 107003.

Position front ring A1 onto theupper casing, and mount front ring, upper casing and lower casingtogether using the two 70 mm. M3screws 107600 and self locking M3nuts 107601.Do not screw them too tight as thiscauses the front ring to bend. Justwhen everything is closed together, stop screwing!
