An urgent push by Demo-crats in Congress to im-

Call for Qatar to ‘release’ Haddad and companionsForeign Ministry condemns ‘unfair’ arrest on Bahrain territorial waters

• Qatari authorities urged to stop ‘attacking’ Bahraini fishermen

• Fisherman recalls ‘bitter experience’ with Qatar coast guard patrols

TDT | Manama

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned the Qatari

coast guard’s arrest of Bahraini bodybuilding champion Sami Al Haddad while he was on a fishing cruise with a number of his companions in the Bahraini territorial waters.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the Qatari authorities to immediate-ly release the Bahraini citizen Sami Al Haddad and his com-panions, and to stop attacking Bahraini fishermen at sea and unfairly arresting them.

On Saturday, Media Advisor to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Nabil Al Hamar,

said that Qatar had arrested Al Haddad during a fishing trip.

In a statement on his Twitter account, Al Hamar said that this incident comes within the sys-tematic campaign launched by Qatar against Bahraini sailors, indicating that this is a clear breach of the Gulf peace agree-ment concluded at the Al-Ula summit in Saudi Arabia.

Qatar signed the statement of solidarity at the historic Al-Ula

summit held between the coun-tries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and it was agreed on reconciliation between the Gulf states and ending the boy-cott of Qatar.

‘Long suffering’Bahraini fisherman Yussef Khamees Al Alaiwi has recount-ed his long suffering as a result of the practices of the Qatar

Coast Guards and Border Secu-rity patrols that have constantly targeted his life and livelihood, as well as those other Bahraini fishermen.

He said that he had paid the equivalent of BD25,000 to the Qatari authorities as fine in five cases, adding that some Bah-raini fishermen had to stop their boats and sell them because of the practices of the Qatari Coast Guards and Border Security pa-trols.

He indicated that they had to take loans in order to pay the fines, recover their fishing ves-sels and release those arrested in Qatar, adding that the patrols used to arrest them, take them to Doha, and refer them to trial.

The patrols also used to con-fiscate the arrestees’ fish, sell it for QR20,000 or QR30,000, and take the amounts for them-selves, he added.

Recalling one of his experi-ences with the Qatari author-ities, Al Alaiwi said that they once smashed the sides of his boat and did not allow him to take it back to Bahrain, adding that he was able to recover it and repair it in Bahrain only after paying the fines to them.

We can stay apart, together!

Practising social distancing is important to lessen the impact of coronavirus

• The rationale behind physical distancing is to try and avoid a huge spike in COVID-19 cases

• It means making changes in our everyday routines to minimise close contact with others

TDT | Manama

While vaccination is already ongoing in the Kingdom of Bah-

rain, and while everybody may feel like more than ready for the virus that causes COVID-19 to be gone, the bitter reality is that, it isn’t going anywhere just yet, not in the coming days or weeks.

We need to remember that the virus is still here and it is not resting. In other words, there’s more work still to be done. But that doesn’t mean we can’t help slow things down.

So how can we get back to “normal” while protecting ourselves and others from the virus? By practising social dis-tancing.

One of the best ways to re-duce the spread of the virus is by continuing to practise social distancing or what others call physical distancing.

What is social distancing and why is it important?

Here’s a refresher: accord-ing to studies, the coronavirus spreads easily. Social distancing puts space between individuals.

The most common way COV-ID-19 spreads is through per-son-to-person contact. When an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, they produce respiratory droplets that can travel about six feet and can

land in the mouths or noses of those nearby.

Studies show that even a dis-tance of three feet significant-ly decreases the spread of the coronavirus from one person to another. At six feet, the risk decreases even further, at nine feet even further than that, and so on, particularly in an indoor setting.

This is basically the reason why social distancing is so im-portant!

However, it is not just about keeping a distance of at least two arms lengths, approximate-ly two metres, from others, as much as possible. It means a whole lot more.

Generally speaking, it means making changes in our everyday routines in order to minimise close contact with others, such as avoiding crowded places and non-essential gatherings; avoid-ing common greetings, such as handshakes; and limiting con-tact with people at higher risk particularly adults and those in poor health.

However, to better define what the National Medical Taskforce for Combating the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is asking us to do, the term

physical distancing is now be-ing used to describe what we need to do to break the chain and prevent the spread of COV-ID-19.

Physical distancing is just as it sounds, it means avoid-ing close physical contact with others to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes work-ing from home, where possible; conducting meetings virtually; and keeping kids away from group gatherings.

While keeping physical dis-tance is very important, we don’t need to socially isolate or distance ourselves. Rather, we need to stick together now more than ever and emotion-ally connect with one another – we just need to do that in creative, virtual ways for the time being.

While those at highest risk seem to be those over age 60 and those with chronic health conditions, the best thing every-one can do is adhere to strict social distancing measures.

At this point, it is unclear as to how long we will have to follow these strict social distancing practices. As we’ve seen, the COVID-19 situation evolves daily and health experts are doing their best to get ahead of this and be as proactive as possible. However, the sooner we can get everyone on board with social distancing the better!

When life begins to return to normal, we may have a new-found appreciation for things that we took for granted – hug-ging our loved ones, meeting up with a friend for coffee, at-tending a sports game, or going to the movies.

In the meantime, social dis-tancing is of our best protec-tions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 so let’s flatten that curve together – but from at least two-metre distance apart!

Important events also need to observe social distancing measures

KNOW WHAT

While keeping physical distance is very important, we

don’t need to socially isolate or distance

ourselves. Rather, we need to stick togeth-

er now more than ever and emotionally connect with one an-other – we just need

to do that in crea-tive, virtual ways for

Stage set for Bahrain Film Festival first session• New date announced after obtaining BACA approval

TDT | Manama

The Bahrain Cinema Club has announced the staging

of the Bahrain Film Festival first session from April 1 to 5 after obtaining the approval of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA).

Initially, it was supposed to take place from March 4 - 8 last year but had to be postponed

due to the pandemic. It would have witnessed the participation of more than 200 films repre-senting directors from 14 Arab countries.

The announcement of the new date for the festival represented a strong push for the Bahrain Film Club to resume the work carried out by all committees be-fore the forced change of the pre-vious date of its establishment. All committees are currently working on preparing to hold the first session of the festival on the scheduled dates.

It will be held by following all the precautionary health measures recommended by the National Medical Taskforce for Combating the Novel Coronavi-rus (COVID-19).

However, the date for the mov-ie screenings and mass concerts will be announced later.

In a statement, the festival management said: “There is a

great desire to create a festival in which filmmakers meet face to face with the audience, but the current situation may not allow for an integrated festival.

At the same time, we are keen not to postpone this cinematic event, which we hope will be an addition to the cinematic events that are held in the region.”

It added: “This potential change in the festival’s shape in its first session in 2021 stems from our keenness in managing the Bahrain Film Festival and managing the organiser, repre-sented by the Bahrain Cinema Club, to preserve the health of all guests and support the partic-ipating local and Arab cinematic efforts.”

An Arab jury will watch the films participating in the Bahrain Film Festival, select the winning films, and announce the results in April.

The festival management has indicated that there are potential summer events that include live shows and seminars that will be organised later in case the festival is not fully held in April.

“There is a great desire to create a festival

in which filmmakers meet face to face with

the audience, but the current situation may not allow for an

integrated festival. At the same time, we are keen not to postpone this cinematic event,

which we hope will be an addition to the cinematic events that

Apple, Hyundai to agree on electric car tie-up early this yearReuters | Seoul

Hyundai Motor and Apple Inc plan to sign a part-

nership deal on autonomous electric cars by March and start production as early as 2024 in the United States, local news-paper Korea IT News reported yesterday.

The report follows a state-ment on Friday from Hyundai Motor that it was in early talks with Apple after another local media outlet said the compa-nies were aiming to launch a self-driving electric car in 2027, sending Hyundai shares up nearly 20%.

Citing industry sources, the

latest report said the pair plan to build the cars at Kia Motors’ fac-tory in Georgia, or jointly invest in a new factory in the United States, with a plan to produce 100,000 vehicles in 2024 at the proposed plant with an annual capacity of 400,000 vehicles. Kia Motors is an affiliate of Hyundai Motors.

The report said Hyundai and Apple plan to release a “beta version” of Apple cars next year.

Reuters reported last month that Apple was moving forward with autonomous car technol-ogy and was aiming to produce a passenger vehicle that could include its own breakthrough battery technology as early as

2024.

Apple, Amazon suspend Parler• Amazon’s move effectively takes the site offline

Reuters

Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc have suspended Parler

from their respective App Store and web hosting service, saying the social networking service popular with many right-lean-ing social media users has not taken adequate measures to pre-vent the spread of posts inciting violence.

The action by Apple and Am-azon follows a similar move by Alphabet Inc’s Google on Friday. Parler is favored by many sup-

porters of US President Donald Trump, who was permanently suspended from Twitter on Fri-day, and it is seen as a haven for people expelled from Twitter.

“We have suspended Parler from the App Store until they resolve these issues,” Apple said in a statement Saturday.

Apple had given Parler 24 hours to submit a detailed mod-

eration plan, pointing to par-ticipants’ using the service to coordinate Wednesday’s siege of the US Capitol.

Amazon’s move effectively takes the site offline unless it can find a new company to host its services.

Amazon suspended Parler from its Amazon Web Services (AWS) unit, for violating AWS’s terms of services by failing to effectively deal with a steady increase in violent content, ac-cording to an email by an AWS Trust and Safety team to Parler, seen by Reuters.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the letter was au-thentic. Due to the “very real risk to public safety” that Parler poses, AWS plans to suspend Parler’s account effective Sun-

day, at 11:59 p.m. PST, the email seen by Reuters showed.

Parler Chief Executive John Matze lashed out at Amazon, Google and Apple, saying it was a coordinated effort knowing Parler’s options would be lim-ited and it would inflict the most damage right as Trump was banned from other social media platforms.

“There is the possibility Par-ler will be unavailable on in-ternet for up to a week as we rebuild from scratch,” he said in a post on Parler.

“This was a coordinated at-tack by the tech giants to kill competition in the market place... You can expect the war on competition and free speech to continue, but don’t count us out.”

Output cuts to help US shale profits in 2021

• US crude oil production has fallen 2 million barrels per day in the last year

• Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, said it would voluntarily reduce its production by 1 million barrels per day (bpd)

Reuters | Houston

A decision by OPEC and a l l ied countr ies to cut crude production

through March delivered a late Christmas present for US shale firms that have slashed costs, but any rise in prices spurred by the unexpected move may be just a modest stocking stuffer.

US crude oil production has fallen 2 million barrels per day in the last year as low prices and demand forced shale producers to cut their losses. Investors had already been pressuring the industry to curb spending and boost returns before the

pandemic hit. Shale output was quickly cut, but might return quickly if prices keep rising.

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, said it would voluntarily reduce its production by 1 million bar-rels per day (bpd) in February and March, after Russia pushed to increase output, worried about US shale capitalizing on the group’s cuts.

Russia and Kazakhstan will increase their output, reluc-tant to cede market share to the United States. Overall, OPEC+ had been due to restore 500,000 bpd in each of the two months. Saudi officials were concerned new increases would outpace demand during new coronavi-rus lockdowns.

Prices for West Texas Inter-mediate on Friday topped $52 per barrel, and the 12-month futures’ price, which producers use to plan spending on new wells, hit $51.37 a barrel, up from $44.63 at the start of De-cember.

Bottom lines of benefit Higher crude prices will fall

directly to US producers’ bot-tom lines given recent cost cuts and commitments to keeping output flat. Companies pledged to keep production flat and use any price increases to boost investor returns or pay down debt.

Rising prices in recent years have “tended to be a bit of a mirage,” said Thomas Jorden, chief executive of Cimarex Energy. “We’re going to be highly disciplined in setting a budget,” he added at a Gold-man Sachs conference on Thursday.

In top two US shale fields, oil and gas companies are profita-ble in the $30 per barrel to low $40s per barrel range, accord-ing to data firm Rystad Energy. This year’s higher prices could push the shale group’s cash from operations up by 32%, Rystad said.

Another factor that will ben-efit producers is low oilfield service costs. Excess capacity at the companies that provide fracking sand and services cut fees and have not been able to raise them.

India’s Biyani sees quick OK of Future’s $3.4bn deal despite Amazon dispute

Reuters | New Delhi

India’s Future Group expects swift regulatory approval of

its $3.4 billion deal to sell its retail assets, its chief execu-tive said, even as its warring business partner Amazon.com Inc intensifies efforts to block the deal.

Future and Amazon are at loggerheads over the Indian group’s August deal with Re-liance Industries Ltd. The US giant alleges the deal breached some of its pre-existing con-tracts with Future.

A New Delhi court in De-cember dismissed Future’s request to restrain Amazon’s repeated attempts to get au-thorities to stall the deal. But the judge left the fate of the transaction with the regula-tors.

“The court has already given their view that every institu-tion can take a view” on the sale, Future Group founder and CEO Kishore Biyani told Reuters in an interview. “So

there is no reason why things should be delayed.”

Amazon declined to com-ment on Biyani’s remarks. Reliance did not respond to a request for comment.

The Securities and Ex-change Board of India (SEBI), the market regulator that has been reviewing the deal for months, did not respond to a request for comment.

SEBI and India’s stock ex-changes could still reject or take more time in approving the deal, which is critical for the survival of Future Retail , whose more than 1,700 outlets were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Future Retail has warned that failure to close the deal could lead to the company’s liquidation and job losses for more than 29,000 employees.

“We have restored business-es to a certain extent, but there are challenges,” said Biyani, dubbed India’s retail king for transforming the country’s re-tailing in recent decades.

Swiss economy could grow by 4% in 2021 and 2022Reuters | Zurich

The Swiss economy could grow at more than dou-

ble its usual rate in 2021 and 2022, with GDP increasing by around 4% in both years as output recovers from the coronavirus epidemic, the government’s chief econ-omist told newspaper NZZ am Sonntag.

In its “positive scenario”, the government expects the global economy to recover from the middle of 2021, Eric Scheidegger said, a sit-uation which should help Switzerland’s export-orien-tated economy.

The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) in its December forecast said it expected GDP growth at 3% in 2021 and 3.1% in 2022 af-ter output fell 3.3% in 2020, the worst downturn since 1975.

The economy typically grows at a rate of around 1.7% per year.

“In our positive scenario, we expect a strong recov-ery in the global economy from the summer onwards,” said Scheidegger, the head of the Economic Policy Di-rectorate at SECO, told the newspaper. “In this case, Switzerland could achieve growth of around 4% in both 2021 and 2022.”

The downturn in 2020, as companies saw their or-der books empty and much of the service sector closed down for long periods, gen-erated an estimated loss of 72 billion Swiss francs ($81.32 bn) for the Swiss economy, he said.

Austrian labour minister quits over plagiarism allegationsReuters | Zurich

Austria’s Labour Minister Christine Aschbacher has

resigned after allegations that she plagiarised some of her university work, but denied any wrongdoing and said she was stepping down to protect her family.

Aschbacher, a member of the conservative Austrian People’s Party which leads the coalition government, allegedly copied at least one fifth of her doc-toral dissertation from other sources, as well as chunks of her diploma thesis, according to academic Stefan Weber who specialises in plagiarism.

Aschbacher said she had written her dissertation and thesis “to the best of her knowledge and belief,” Austri-

an news agency APA reported.“The hostility, the political

agitation, and the insults are unfortunately being unloaded not only on me, but also on my children, and with unbearable force,” she was cited as saying.

“I cannot allow this to con-tinue in order to protect my family. For this reason, I am resigning from office.”

Figures as of closing

News in brief u Pakistan was hit by a massive power blackout early Sunday, officials said, with much of the country, including all major cities, plunged into darkness. The electricity distribution system in the nation of more than 210 million people is a complex -- and delicate -- web, and a problem in one section of the grid can lead to cascading breakdowns countrywide. The latest blackout was caused by a fault in southern Pakistan at 11:41 pm local time on Saturday (1841 GMT), power minister Omar Ayub Khan tweeted, citing preliminary reports.

u The United States is ending restrictions governing official contacts with Taiwan, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saturday, a move hailed by Taipei as ending “decades of discrimination”. Pompeo said the “complex internal restrictions” on contacts with Taipei by diplomats,

service members and others had been imposed “in an attempt to appease the Communist regime in Beijing.” Pompeo added, “No more.” “Decades

of discrimination, removed,” tweeted Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s diplomatic envoy to the States. “A huge day in our bilateral relationship. I will cherish every opportunity.”

u Ten babies were killed in a maternity unit in the Indian state of Maharashtra early Saturday when fire tore through a major hospital, a doctor said. Staff rescued seven of the newborn infants at the Bhandara district hospital but were beaten back before they could get to the 10 others, Pramod Khandate, a senior doctor, told AFP. All of those who died were aged between a few days and three months, according to reports.

u At least 11 people were killed, including a six-year-old boy, and scores more were missing after deadly landslides hit Indonesia’s West Java province, authorities said yesterday. Torrential rains triggered the disaster on Saturday evening in the town of Sumedang, where a second landslide buried residents and a rescue team that had been searching for the initial victims, said Bandung rescue agency spokeswoman Seni Wulandari. “We’re still documenting how many are missing after the second landslide because there were many people who joined the original rescue effort,” she said. At least one survivor was seriously injured, while 11 people were confirmed dead, Wulandari said.

Indonesia locates black boxes

• The Boeing 737-500 with 62 passengers and crew was headed to Pontianak in West Kalimantan on Saturday

• It is the first major aircrash in Indonesia since 189 passengers and crew were killed in 2018

• There were no immediate clues on what caused the jet’s sudden descent.

Reuters | Jakarta

Indonesian authorities yester-day located the black boxes of the Sriwijaya Air jet that

crashed into the sea soon after taking off from the capital Ja-karta, as human body parts and suspected pieces of the plane

were retrieved.The Boeing 737-500 with 62

passengers and crew was headed to Pontianak in West Kalimantan on Saturday before it disappeared from radar screens four minutes after takeoff. It is the first major aircrash in Indonesia since 189 passengers and crew were killed in 2018 when a Lion Air Boeing 737 Max in 2018 also plunged into the Java Sea soon after takeoff from Soekarno-Hatta Interna-tional Airport.

Even before the latest crash, more people had died in air cash-es in Indonesia than in any other country over the past decade, ac-cording to Aviation Safety Net-work’s database.

Indonesia National Transport Safety Committee chief Soerjan-to Tjahjono said the locations of Flight SJ 182’s two black boxes had been identified.

“Hopefully, we can

retrieve them soon,” said military chief Hadi Tjahjanto, without giving an estimated timeframe.

Pieces of wreckage were brought to Jakarta port by rescu-ers. Authorities said they came from a depth of 23 metres (75 feet) near a group of islands off the Jakarta coast.

One twisted piece of metal was painted in Sriwijaya Air’s blue

and red colours. Indonesian authorities said they had

also retrieved body parts and clothing.

Police asked families to pro-vide information such as dental records and DNA samples to help identify bodies.

The plane had 12 crew and 50 passengers on board, all Indone-sians and including seven chil-dren and three babies.

President Joko Widodo, speak-ing at the palace in Bogor, ex-pressed “deep condolences” over the disaster and urged the public to pray the missing people could be found.

“WE FEEL POWERLESS”Tracking service Flightradar24

said the aircraft took off at 2:36 pm local time (0736 GMT) and c l i m b e d to reach 10,900 feet with- in four minutes.

It then began a steep descent and stopped transmitting data 21 sec-onds later.

There were no immediate clues on what caused the jet’s sudden descent. Most air accidents are caused by a cocktail of factors that can take months to establish, safety experts say.

A t ra n s p o r t m i n i st r y spokeswoman

said

air traffic control had asked the pilot why the plane was heading northwest instead of on its ex-pected flight path seconds before it disappeared.

The pilots had decades of ex-perience between them with the flight captain reported to be a for-mer air force pilot and his co-pi-lot at Sriwijaya Air since 2013, according to his Linkedin profile.

The Sriwijaya Air plane was a nearly 27-year-old Boeing 737-

500, much older than Boeing’s problem-plagued 737 MAX model. Older 737 models are widely flown and do not have the stall-prevention system im-

plicated in the MAX safety crisis.“We are in contact with our airline customer and

stand ready to support them dur-ing this dif-ficult time,” Boeing said in a state-ment. “Our t h o u g h t s

are with the crew, passengers, and their families.”

Distraught relatives waited in Pontianak about 740 km (460 miles) from Jakarta for news of their loved ones. At Jakarta’s main airport a crisis centre was set up for families.

“We feel powerless, we can only wait and hope to get any information soon,” Irfansyah Ri-yanto, who had five relatives on the flight, told reporters.

Founded in 2003, Jakarta-based Sriwijaya Air group flies largely within Indonesia’s sprawling ar-chipelago. The budget airline has had a solid safety record, with no onboard casualties in four inci-dents recorded on the Aviation Safety Network database.

In 2007, the European Union banned all Indonesian airlines following a series of crashes and reports of deteriorating oversight and maintenance since deregula-tion in the late 1990s. The restric-tions were fully lifted in 2018.

Japanese pray for end to pandemic in ice bath ritual

Reuters | Tokyo

Men wearing traditional loin clothes and women dressed in white robes clapped and chanted before going into an ice

water bath during a Shinto ritual at a Tokyo shrine yesterday to purify the soul and pray for the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only a dozen people took part in the annual event at Tep-pou-zu Inari Shrine, scaled down this year due to the health crisis, compared to over a hundred in early 2020. Spectators were not allowed at the event.

After doing warming-up exercises and chanting under a clear sky with outside temperatures at 5.1 degree Celsius (41.18 Fahrenheit), the nine male and three female participants went into a bath filled with cold water and large ice blocks. “I prayed that the coronavirus comes to an end as soon as possible,” said 65-year-old participant Shinji Ooi, who heads the Shrine’s ‘Yayoikai’ parishioner group, after the ritual.

Japan has struggled to contain a recent surge in coronavirus infections, with Tokyo reporting 1,494 new cases on Sunday. The government declared a limited state of emergency for Tokyo and three neighbouring prefectures on Thursday, cov-ering about 30% of the country’s population, in a bid to stem the spread.

Fewer participants at the Shinto ritual made the water extra cold, participant Naoaki Yamaguchi told Reuters.

“Normally we have more participants and it makes the water temperature a little bit warmer. But this year, there were just twelve people, so it (the cold) was crazy,” the 47-year-old said.

The shrine added the theme of “warding off epidemics” to the annual event, which is held on the second Sunday of each year and is now in its 66th year.

New coronavirus cases in China double, mainly in Hebei provinceReuters | Beijing

The daily number of new coronavirus cas-

es has doubled in China, prompting tougher move-ment restrictions and, in the capital, passengers must scan a health code before boarding a cab or ride-hailing car, officials said yesterday.

Mainland China report-ed 69 cases on Jan. 9, com-pared with 33 reported a day earlier, the country’s national health authority said on Sunday.

The new rule on cab journeys follows the discovery on Sat-urday that a ride-hailing driver in Beijing was an asymptomatic carrier of the new coronavirus, city health official Pang Xinghuo told media.

Since Jan. 1, 96 drivers on a ride-hailing app Didi have been fined a total of 1 million yuan ($154,440) for improperly imple-menting coronavirus prevention measures, such as wearing a mask, Rong Jun, a Beijing city transport official, said.

Over the course of the pandemic, mainland China has re-ported a total of 87,433 confirmed coronavirus cases, with 4,634 deaths.

Is-raelis over the age of 60, those with health problems and medical personnel have been receiving first injections of Pfizer Inc. vaccines since Dec 19. As three weeks have passed, they are beginning to be due for follow-up, final doses.

“It changes everything,” said Guy Choshen, a director of the COVID-19 ward at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital, who got his

second injection. “I’m really happy that I’m over that (and) looking forward for all this ep-idemic to be finished.”

The Health Ministry said 19.5% of the population have been vaccinated, including more than 72% of the over-60s.

Stalin-themed cafe in Moscow closed after public outcryReuters | Moscow

A shawarma shop in Mos-cow was forced to close a

day after it opened following an outcry over its provocative Josef Stalin-themed brand-ing, the shop’s owner said on Saturday.

The Stalin Doner shop fea-tured a portrait of the con-troversial Communist leader above its front door. Inside, a man dressed in the Stalin-era security service uniform served customers meat wraps named after Soviet leaders.

“We fully opened the day before yesterday and served

around 200 customers,” shop owner Stanislav Voltman said.

“There were no legal reasons (to close the shop),” he added, but said that police had forced him to remove the Stalin sign and then “colossal pressure” from local authorities forced him to shut completely.

Israel rolls out COVID booster shotsReuters | Tel Aviv

Israel’s coronavirus vaccina-tion campaign, the world’s

fastest per capita, shifted to booster shots yesterday in a bid to protect the most vulnerable citizens by next month and ease curbs on the economy.

The shop featured a portrait of stalin above its front door.

German parliament boosts security after US Capitol riotsReuters | Berlin

Security has been stepped up at Germany’s Bundestag

(lower house of parliament) after the storming of the Cap-itol in Washington by rioters last week, Bundestag President Wolfgang Schaeuble has told lawmakers, Bild am Sonntag weekly reported.

“Berlin state police have ar-ranged for a reinforcement of their forces around the Reich-stag building,” it quoted Schau-eble as saying in a letter to law-makers. A spokeswoman for the Bundestag confirmed that Schaeuble had written to law-makers about the current situa-tion but declined to give details

of the content of the letter.Bild am Sonntag also report-

Daisy Ridley reveals ‘scary’ thing about being in ‘Star Wars’IANS | Los Angeles

Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley has revealed the scary side of fame that came with starring in the global blockbust-er franchise.

Ridley became popular as Rey in the recent Star Wars trilogy. She shared she had the “best time” working on the films, but admitted the role attracted a lot of unwanted

attention, reports contactmusic.com.“’Star Was’ was ‘This Thing’. And then it was ‘This Thing

That Came To An End’. It hasn’t always been easy,” she said.“There are things (about being in ‘Star Wars’) I don’t like

talking about, because it’s not the good side. People turn up at your doorstep, that’s scary. And I’ve been followed, that’s a bit ‘woah’,” she added.

But in terms of the actual experience, she said: “I had the best time. And now I’m out of it, I feel like I want to work really hard and honour the decision of the people that cast me.”

She feels that she will always wonder why she was chosen for the role.

She said: “I just think there will always be a question, why was it me? That will always be there. Why me?’”

“I know there were a thousand other actresses who could have done it. I guess ultimately it came to a point where I decided I have to be okay with this. I got this magical piece of luck. The stars aligned. I have to be okay with the amazing chance. That’s it,” she added.

Kate Middleton prepared for her

future role as QueenANI | London

As she turned 39 years old on Saturday, it became apparent that the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate

Middleton, who was once merely a mild-mannered college graduate, is ready for her role as the future Queen.

According to E! News after almost a decade of offi-cially accepting her post, Kate has more than proved her worth as a senior royal while deftly filling the void left by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s swift de-parture. She has carved out her space in the areas of early

education, child development and mental health awareness, proving she’s ready to embrace the role that awaits her in the future.

For years she was viewed as Prince William’s soft-spoken, mild-mannered college sweetheart. But now after a decade

she’s done with that and is committing herself to foster real change in the nation and the world at large by mas-tering the art of the walkabout.

As per E! News, describing the duchess, a source said, “If she needs to step up to the plate, she does it--and she always has.”

“You see it more and more. The young student has turned into our future Queen.”

Before the titles, the 20 some odd patronages and the crash course in security protocols, Kate was an accessories buyer that Queen Elizabeth II fretted wasn’t up for such a blue-blooded existence.

Ali Bagautinov eager to be back in action at BRAVE CF 46TDT | Manama

Flyweight star Ali Bagauti-nov will have the first taste

of BRAVE CF action a week from today, when he takes on Oleg Lichkovakha in a Catch-weight bout. It will serve as the co-main event of BRAVE CF 46, the fastest-growing or-ganization’s first-ever trip to Russia, which will take place in association with Krepost Selection.

It is a much-needed return to mixed martial arts to one of Russia’s most well-round-ed fighters. Bagautinov has experience in boxing, wres-tling, sambo, and pankration, having excelled at world level in many of these sports. Now,

he’s eager to get back in the mix.

So much so that he’s just hap-py to be in action again, and has dismissed Oleg Lichkovakha as an opponent, claiming he prefers to let his rival think of him instead of thinking about Oleg himself.

‘’I don’t think much of my opponent Oleg, let him think of me. And I calmly wait and pre-pare for January 16th. I missed the cage very much, I am hun-gry and angry, I want to show my best fighting qualities’’, says ‘’Puncher King’’.

Mafra fires back at Eldarov ahead of BRAVE CF 46Leonardo Mafra addressed the controversial revelation that Eldar Eldarov was behind the viral slogan: “If Sambo was easy, it would be called Jiu-jitsu”

• Mafra will face Super Lightweight champion Eldarov in the main event of the evening for BRAVE CF 46

TDT | Manama

Brazil’s Leonardo Mafra is less than two weeks away from the biggest fight of

his professional career. On Jan-uary 16th, Mafra will challenge the undisputed BRAVE CF Super Lightweight champion Eldar Eldarov in the main event of the evening for BRAVE CF 46, in Sochi, Russia.

Mafra took some time to talk the BRAVE Nation ahead of this gigantic fight and spoke his mind during a Live Instagram Interview. Leonardo made sure to leave a warning to the champ, ensuring that he’s ready to take the control of the fight wherever it goes. He also addressed the controversial revelation that Eldar was behind the infamous t-shirt worn by Khabib Nurmag-omedov with the saying ‘’if sam-bo was easy, it would be called jiu-jitsu’’, that enraged the Bra-zilian martial arts community despite being done in a jokingly manner by Eldarov.

“I’m a proud Brazilian, right? So, of course, I respect and ap-preciate the Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

More than that, I carry that flag wherever I go. But I know El-dar is a guy who likes to say he represents sambo…. Well, if he’s from sambo, I’m a vale-tudo guy. Even better than sambo is Vale-tudo, MMA”, Mafra said.

What Leonardo refers too is the fact that the vale-tudo (which roughly translates as “anything goes” from Brazilian Portuguese) was a no-holds-barred predecessor of Mixed Martial Arts in the Brazilian scene, especially with some of the founding fathers of the sport coming from Mafra’s home country.

Leonardo is a member of the Chute-Boxe lineage. The icon-ic team, which was originally founded in Curitiba, Brazil, and

was one of the biggest talent pools in the world during the early 2000s, spread its sphere of influence around the globe, including Master Julio Cesar and Rafael Cordeiro, both im-portant coaching figures in his career to this day.

Leonardo Mafra will chal-lenge Eldar Eldarov for the BRAVE CF Super Lightweight title at BRAVE CF 46, which is the Rusisan debut event for the fast-est-growing MMA promotion in the world. The card, held in as-sociation with the local promot-ers of Krepost Selection, will count with important athletes from Russia’s Mixed Martial Arts scene, such as Ali Bagauti-nov, Roman Bogatov, and Kon-stantin Erokhin.

“I’m a proud Brazilian, right? So, of course, I

respect and appreciate the Brazilian jiu-jitsu. More than that, I carry that flag wherever I go.

BRX reflects on first taste of Dakar Rally, looks ahead to marathon stageTDT | Manama

Bahrain Raid Xtreme (BRX) and its T1 class Hunter has

completed the first half of its maiden Dakar Rally adventure, reaching the halfway point at Ha’il, Saudi Arabia.

Behind the wheel of the two Hunter vehicles are, nine-time World Rally Champion, Sebas-tien Loeb, and two-time Dakar Rally winner, Nani Roma. Loeb and Roma reached Ha’il having completed six stages of gruel-ling driving; covering 4030km and taking on rocky tracks, vast open desert, tall camel grass and steep, uncompromising sand dunes.

The Dakar Rally – notably one of the most challenging feats in motorsport – has served BRX drivers, Loeb and Roma, with challenging driving conditions and tested the navigation skills of their co-drivers. Both driv-ers have been impressed by the Hunter’s performance, speed, resilience and the capabilities needed to compete in the Dakar.

Roma, who had to replace his co-driver just days before the first stage of the rally, has con-sistently shown the pace of the Hunter over the first six stages, and now sits 5th overall, +1:36:55 behind the leader. Loeb had to

overcome a broken wishbone on stage six, but completed the stage, meaning he will continue to challenge for stage positions for the remainder of the rally. He is 44th overall, but that does not reflect the impressive speed he has shown across the stages.

With six stages of the Dakar Rally 2021 complete, the team now looks towards the second half of the rally; taking learnings from the first half of its debut year in motorsport’s toughest test of endurance.

The drivers will embark on stages seven to 12, for the sec-ond half of the contest, begin-ning part one of the marathon stage from Ha’il to Sakaka; with 267km of road driving and 471km of special stage. The

Dakar Rally route will then take Loeb and Roma through the city of NEOM, an ambitious beacon of sustainability within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, before eventually winding its way back to Jeddah via the hills, valleys and coastline.

Speaking at the halfway stage, BRX driver Nani Roma said: “So far, I think we have had a good rally. Each day Alex [Winocq] and I work better together, and we are really enjoying it. The stages are challenging, but that is Dakar and that is cross coun-try rallying. Of course, the nav-igation has been difficult, and this is something we will try to work on for the second half of the Dakar. The Hunter has been amazing – it is the first time the

car has competed in the desert and the performance is really very good. I am excited to see what we can do over the next six days.”

Sebastien Loeb, in the #305 Hunter will compete for stage wins for the second half of the rally. Speaking on the rest day from Ha’il, the BRX driver add-ed: “On stage six we suffered a broken wishbone which we were not able to fix ourselves. This now puts us out of con-tention. We are pleased that we were able to fix it and will be able to compete in the second half of the rally. This is obvious-ly not the outcome that any of us wanted, but we have a good car in the Hunter, and we will continue to compete for stage wins.”

Muharraq rout Isa Town while Hala edge past SamaheejTDT | Manama

Muharraq routed Isa Town 119-77 last night in the

2020/2021 Zain Bahrain Bas-ketball League. Following a close first half, Muharraq came alive after the interval as they used a 42-17 third-quarter drubbing of their rivals to take control of the contest.

That helped them go ahead by as many as 44 points the rest of the way, en route to closing out the big win.

Serbian import Aleksander Mitrovic had a team-high 19 points in just 15 minutes of action. Hussain Shaker and Bader Abdulla Malabes came off the bench to contribute 16 and 15, respectively, including three three-pointers apiece, while Mohammed Juma’a had 12, Sayed Mohammed Hameed 11, and Mohammed Buallay 10.

Ahmed Altayeb scored 22 to lead Isa Town in the losing ef-fort. Mohammed Nabeel con-tributed 18 while Deon Joyner had 15 and 14 rebounds.

The result earned Muharraq their seventh win of the season as they bounced back from suf-fering their first loss last week. Isa Town dropped their eighth successive game and remained winless on the bottom of the league standings.

In yesterday’s other game, Al Hala overcame a tough chal-

lenge against Samaheej in a 75-69 win.

Sayed Kadhem Majed had 18 points to lead the victors while Hussain Salman chipped in with a near-triple double of 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Canadian profes-sional Keanau Post was held to just 11 points but he took down 25 rebounds in the win.

Senegalese import Mansour Kasse had 27 to pace Samaheej in the loss. Basel Adel added 16 and Ahmed Fateel had 10 for Samaheej. Hala improved to a 5-1 win-loss record with the result while Samaheej dropped to 3-5.

League action continues to-night with Al Ettihad playing Nuwaidrat in the first game at 5.30pm, followed at 7.45pm by Riffa taking on defending champions Al Ahli.

2 Seas triumphs in Gulf 12 Hours BahrainHH Shaikh Isa bin Abdulla Al Khalifa spearheads 2 Seas’ no. 33 crew featuring Ben Barnicoat and Martin Kodric

• Raed Raffii, Raed Himmo claim a victory each in BIC 2,000cc Challenge races

TDT | Manama

Bahraini racing team 2 Seas Motorsport, featuring His Highness Shaikh Isa bin

Abdulla Al Khalifa as one of its competing drivers, emerged victorious in first-ever Gulf 12 Hours Bahrain, held over the weekend at Bahrain Internation-al Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

2 Seas’ no. 33 McLaren 720S GT3 car, in which HH Shaikh Isa shared race duties with Brit-on Ben Barnicoat and Croatian Martin Kodric, stormed to the hard-earned win after com-pleting 341 laps by the end of the hotly contested endurance event, which attracted drivers and teams from across the globe.

It was a spectacular result for the team who enjoyed a stellar performance throughout the three-day meeting. They also topped the timesheets twice in the three Practice sessions be-fore capturing pole position with their no. 33 car while locking up the front row for the race.

2 Seas’ other entrant in the Gulf 12 Hours Bahrain, with the trio of Edward Jones, Lewis Williamson and Dylan Pereira taking turns behind the wheel of the no. 7 McLaren 720S GT3, had a solid start but were forced to retire due to engine issues after

just 26 laps. Meanwhile, also taking place

in Sakhir over the weekend was the fourth round of the 2020/2021 BIC 2,000cc Chal-lenge, with Raed Raffii in a Hon-da S2000 and Raed Himmo in a Honda Civic each coming away with a race win.

Action in the Gulf 12 Hours Bahrain was held around the 5.412-kilometre Grand Prix circuit, while the BIC 2,000cc Challenge took place along BIC’s 2.554-kilometre Inner Track.

2 Seas take pole-to-flag victoryStarting from pole, 2 Seas’

no. 33 crew capitalised on their leading grid position and did well to hold on to their advan-tage after the first six hours of the race. They had completed 169 laps at the midway point, but the rest of the field remained hot on their trail.

Following the exit of the team’s no. 7 car, the race leaders needed a strong finish over the final six hours, and they deliv-ered just that. They powered to the chequered flag with 341 laps completed while also setting the race’s fastest lap of two minutes 00.882 seconds.

The victors finished one lap ahead of overall runners-up Di-namic Motorsport competing in the no. 67 Porsche 911 GT3 R, while Ram Racing were third two laps behind in their no. 3 Mercedes AMG GT3.

Monster VR46 Kessel featur-ing seven-time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi came fourth in their no. 46 Ferrari 488 GT3, while completing the top six were Team Parker Racing (no. 31 Bentley Continental GT3) and Kessel Racing (no. 27 Ferrari 488 GT3).

The rest of the overall classi-

fication from seventh through 12th, respectively, were Kessel Racing (no. 8 Ferrari 488 GT3), Scuderia Villorba Corse (no. 90 Mercedes AMG GT4), SVC Sport Management (no. 50 Maserati MC GT4), Optimum Motorsport (no. 77 McLaren 570 GT4), In-ception Racing with Optimum (no. 72 McLaren 720S GT3) and 2 Seas’ no. 7 challenger.

Aside from their overall win, 2 Seas’ no. 33 car were also first among the race’s GT3 Pro par-ticipants. The other winners in the other categories were the no. 67 car of Dinamic Motor-sport in the GT3 Pro-Am class, the no. 27 Kessel Racing in the GT3 Gentlemen class, and the no. 90 Scuderia Villorba Corse in the GT4 class.

Raeds share the spoils in 2,000cc races

In the 2,000cc Challenge, Majed Himmo driving a Honda Civic topped both the Practice and Qualifying sessions, but it was Raffii who was able to get a good start in the first race and take the lead in the opening lap.

He held on to the advantage from there and won in a total race time of 15 minutes 53.655

seconds after 12 laps. Majed Himmo had to settle

for second place 5.741 seconds behind, while Ali Al Mansoori (Honda Civic) came third overall 6.088s back. Martyna Al Qassab (Acura DC5), Andreas Buelow (Honda Civic), Ramzi Al Qassab
