CASE STUDY

The centerpiece of the US Navy’s airborne Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) mis-sion is the Raytheon AN/AQS-22 Airborne Low Frequency Sonar (ALFS). The AN/AQS-22 is the only deployed “dipping active sonar” with multi-frequency opera-tional capabilities that adapts to varying environmental conditions and identifies threats sooner over a large area.

• Prior to the 1970s: Most submarines were noisy enough that a Passive Sonarcould detect them. The sonar would listen for submarine activities for detection.

CURRENT APPLICATION

The AN/AQS-22 was first deployed in 2002. The US Navy recognized that it was time for a “face-lift” to take advantage of the advancements made in the last decade in the areas of Electronic Warfare, Digital Signal Processing, and Data Link throughput. The AN/AQS-22 is composed of seven Weapon Replaceable Assemblies (WRA):

Acoustic Processor (proprietary US Navy furnished equipment) – Performs data processing of sonar return pulses and monitors maintenance data.

Sonar Transmitter/Receiver (ST/R) – Forms the sonar energy pulses and per-forms fault status monitoring.

Reeling Machine Interface Unit (RMIU) to MH-60R – Controls the AN/AQS-22 raise and lower functions.

Reeling Machine Control Unit (RMCU) to MH-60R – Is the reeling machine con-trol box with status display.

Reeling Machine (RM) to MH-60R – Raises and lowers AN/AQS-22 using hy-draulic power and provides electrical backup.

Reel & Cable (R&C) – 2,500ft coaxial cable typical

Transducer Assembly (TA) – Produces omni-directional pulses and deploys a receive array of 12 hydrophone stave arms.

TEVET SOLUTION

TEVET engaged directly with the engineering team at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Raytheon IDS in San Diego to gain a full understanding of the application and the test challenges they were faced with. TEVET conducted a full gap analysis to gain further insight to what was required for today’s need and any future needs that might arise. Determining factors of the gap analysis for identifying the best COTS solution included: validating that Abaco’s XCR15 and PMC-0247RC met all the current required specifications, and that Abaco’s expertise in sonar applications made them uniquely qualified as an embedded solutions provider to meet NAVSEA’s future modernization efforts.

The US Navy placed a Total Small Business Set-Aside Solicitation on FedBizOpps for a quantity of 22 Abaco Systems XCR15 cPCI SBCs (Level 3) and a quantity of 22 PMC-0247RC Solid State Disk Drives (Level 3) to address their need to update their AN/AQS-22 system; as well as meet the DoD’s SDVOSB & HUBZone Small Business goals.
