    DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION:

    Urinary Tract Infection in the western vernacular, Is when the urinary tract, which is comprised of two

    kidneys, two ureters, bladder and a urethra is infected by either bacteria (Escherichia Coli, E.Coli), a

    virus (Herpes Simplex) or a fungus (Candida) causing the following symptoms, urinary retention,

    pain ful urinatio n, p yuria and lower b ackp ain.

    According to the TCM perspect ive the consumption of spicy foods, foods that are high in fat and sugar

    can be attributed to causing two pattern presentations, Damp Heat pattern and Kidney Spleen

    Deficiency patterns.

    CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS:

    Damp Heat in the Urinary Bladder: (The Practice of Chinese Medicine) pg 891-892

    This can be the cause urinary retention, scanty urine output, dysuria w/fullness in the hypogastrium.

    Dampness can obstruct the water passages. When heat manifests, it can contribute to urinary retention

    and when heat b ecomes present damages can destroy the fluids through condensing and concentrating

    leading to dark urine.

    T: Sticky-yellow coating that is thicker on the root.

    P: Slippery-Rapid

    Treatment Principle: Resolve Dampness, clear heat, promote urination.

    The incontinence of urine in scanty amounts is present, dribbling after urination and dark urine due to

    the concentration of fluids is key when describing Kidney Yin Deficiency a (Empty Heat) condition

    that can also affect the pericardium and triple burner.

    T: No coating, if empty heat is present, the body will be red

    P: Floating, empty.

    Treatment principle: Tonify the Kidneys and nourish Yin.

    This Empty pattern causes no pain which ban be attributed to a weak constitution associated with old

    age. This can present with a moderate incontinence with a frequent urge to urinate.

    T: Pale

    P: Weak

    classified in two categories.

    a. Hyperactive and nervous children.

    Liver-Fire would pertain to the first group due to the agitation of the Ethereal Soul (Hun).

    Treatment Principle: Soothe the Liver, drain fire, calm the mind and settle Ethereal Soul

    Drink 8 full glasses of water daily with a diluted cranberry juice or extract.

    Proper hygiene is essential

    Prognosis:

    A urinary tract infection is uncomfortable, but treatment is usually successful. Symptoms of a bladder

    infection usually disappear within 24 - 48 hours after treatment begins. If you have a kidney infection,

    it may take 1 week or longer for your symptoms to go away.
