General KU questionSource AMany Scots moved to the cities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Many were left unemployed when machinery like tractors arrived in the countryside. Also, seasonal farming work meant there was not a steady income. Some left Scotland completely. Shipyards in cities provided jobs for people.

1.Why did many Scottish people leave the countryside for towns and cities?

(4 marks)

You must use the source and your own knowledge in order to get full marks.

Model Answer

There were many reasons why people left the countryside to move to towns and cities in Scotland. Farmers bought machines which could do work much faster than men, leaving people unemployed. Farming work was sometimes seasonal meaning you could not rely on a regular wage. It was also possible to get work in shipyards. From my own knowledge I know that towns and cities had far more jobs available. Also, there were many more facilities such as shops in the towns and cities and this attracted people.

Model AnswerCities like Glasgow and Edinburgh offered many opportunities to people. There were many more job opportunities than in the country and lots of jobs available. Wages were considerably higher than those paid on farms. Work was less seasonal and available all year round. In addition, towns offered schools, shops and hospitals that country villages rarely had.
