Thanks to Country radio for hanging with me.” So said a very emotional Keith Urban to almost 20,000 fans as he returned to the stage for an encore Friday night (6/8) in Phoenix. The over two-hour show at the sold-out US Airways Center was the first date on the U.S. leg of his “Love, Pain & the whole crazy World Tour,” and his first major U.S. arena appearance in almost 16 months. We talked before the show, and he told me, “Man, I am really ready to get out and play.” And he wasn’t kidding. He sounded and looked great, and wailed as bad-ass a guitar as I ever remember hearing him play – The Ranch days included. Keith also seemed to be having as much fun as the audience, while also demonstrating that he’s in a good place right now. He said as much to the crowd early in the show: “It’s very, very good to be back, playing and touring. It’s been a wacky few months. It’s good to get back on the straight-and-narrow.” Urban’s new stage features a mammoth 58’x28’ high- definition video screen that was used to display live shots – which had an incredible film-like quality – the band in silhouette, footage of old race cars in London, images from the ’60s civil rights movement that served as a backdrop to the song “Used To The Pain.” It also served as a vivid multi- color backdrop. (continued on page 7) Soul2Soul II Hits The Road Between Urban’s tour open, CMA Music Festival (see page 8), Kenny Chesney’s first stadium show of the season (Pittsburgh, 6/9) and the launch of Soul2Soul II (Omaha, 6/5), we may have just closed the books on country’s most eventful week of the year. We enlisted cub reporter and KEEY/Minneapolis PD Gregg Swedberg to cover Soul2Soul II’s second stop on Friday (6/8). Here’s his take: Just when you thought you had seen it all, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill blew me away. They promised that this year’s version would be different than last year – it was. And as good as last year was, this year’s was more relaxed, less stressed, and both Tim and Faith knocked it out of the park. Urban Assault: Capitol’s Keith Urban hobnobbed with radio types prior to the opening night of his “Love, Pain & the whole crazy World Tour” in Phoenix last Friday. Getting ready to be rocked were (l-r) R&R Country Editor R.J. Limited almost exclusively to artists and staff, past and present, the party opened with cocktails and the remembrancesofanyonewillingtotakethestageandrecalltheir part in the label’s remarkable rise. The Hall of Fame atrium was adorned with photos and memorabilia, but the centerpiece of the night was a video the assembled viewed in the museum’s Ford Theater. The 43-minute clip starts humorously with a voiceover byJames Earl JonesfromField Of DreamsencouraginglabelPresidentRandy Goodmanto“buildit.”Next, thelabel’s genesis is thoughtfully narrated by Goodman, who recognizes by name every employee in the company’s history. The video then takes a profound turn, centering on powerful and highly personal anecdotes of military, hospital or personal community service as told by Sarah Buxton, Rascal Flatts, SheDaisy, Aaron Tippin,Trent TomlinsonandLari White.Oneimmediatelyrealizestheserecollectionswere captured not to glorify or salute the artists’ efforts, but to demonstrate the impact their initiatives had on their own lives. Each story is powerful, especially SheDaisy’s Karli, KelsiandKristyn Osborn reflecting how some of the troops for whom they performed probably never came home. Unquestionably the most emotional, compelling moment is Josh Gracin breaking down while telling the story of parents who approached him for an autograph on a photo of their daughter, who had died just a few days before getting to see him – her favorite artist.

They opened using essentially the same set as last year, which is a technical marvel. But they surprised everyone (pleasantly) by starting on opposite sides of the arena singing Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars,” countrified. Memo to the duo – get that recorded now. Better than the original. Faith then took over for an hour, and just blew the crowd away. She seems more relaxed and confident than at any time in the many times I’ve seen her, and she featured some new stuff from her [upcoming] Greatest Hits including Abba’s “Winner Takes It All,” which was accompanied by what seemedlikeamillionmirrorballs. Tim came out and played a lot of stuff from his new CD, including his version of “Suspicions,” which was hot. The rest of Tim’s set was great, and they ended with their duets, includingthesingle“INeedYou”astheclosingsong.Ihearthat Tim has threatened that this will be the duo’s last tour together. If true, it’s an event that needs to be taken in. Both artists are obviously at a point where they don’t need to prove anything to anyone, but they took great pains to entertain both artists’ fans. The pre-show “Vibe Room” was well done, and the pair wereverygraciousandaccommodating.Lori McKennadid a nice 20-minute set prior to the main event, and while it wasn’t exactly what the crowd came for, Ms. McKenna played some very interesting songs that I’m anxious to hear on her forthcoming debut CD. Halfway To Hazard played out front to an enthusiastic crowd, and I hope they get to come inside and crank it up for the waiting crowd.

This week’s releases include:

Toby Keith Big Dog Daddy (Show Dog) We’re all used to Toby writing the bulk of his own material and co-producing his own albums, but this time out he gets sole producer credit on all but two cuts. He co-wrote nine of 11, and one he didn’t write that’s

lined up as the next single, “Love Me If You Can” (Craig Wiseman/Craig Wallin), might as well have come from Toby’s pen. Show Dog’s Carter’s Chord add backing vocals on the title track...and Toby contributes his own bgvs on several cuts. Another first.

Little Texas Missing Years (Montage) The re-formed four-piece featuring Porter Howell, Dwayne O’Brien, Duane Propes and Del Gray has writing credit on seven of 11 tracks. Titles include “Rebel,” “Texas 101,” “Gotta Get Me Down Home” and

“You Ain’t Seen Me Lately.” Anthony Martin produced. Missing Years, incidentally, is Montage’s first full studio album release.

Upcoming releases:

Urban Tour Launch (continued from page 1) The new set-up also features a runway that goes from centerstagetoalmostthebackofthearena.Urbansangfrom various spots on the ramp during the show. At one point he and the entire band took up residence around the circle, surrounded by fans for a short acoustic set. The group returned to the main stage accompanied by a local drum corps, which I was told will be part of every show. Some reactions from radio folks in attendance: >KNIX PD Ray Massie: “Keith looked in absolutely tip-top shape and put on a show that looked as good as he must havefelt.” >KMLE PD Jay McCarthy, whohadsuchagoodtimehe followed the tour to Las Vegas on Saturday night and San Diego on Sunday night: “Keith hasn’t stepped up to another level, he’s created one. A 58-foot HDTV screen, innovative lighting and video schemes coupled with a simple stage but very effective setup make it work in a way I’ve not seen in this format. The show is an experiential, infectious showcase for Keith’s tool shed of talents.”

>KBQI/Albuquerque PD Tim Jones kept repeating throughout the show: “Rock star. Keith is a rock star.” >And, KBQI MD Jeff Jaywasoverheardtellingafriendon the phone, “This is one of the best concert’s I’ve ever seen inanygenreofmusic.” Urban’s night officially began with his “KUBE” – Keith Urban Backstage Experience. A small band of KMLE and KNIXcontestwinners, alongwithafewstationstaffersandotherguests, weretakentoaroombackstage.Keithcameinand sang for the 60-or so gathered, and then took questions. The first: “Are you going to have kids?” To which he replied, “It’d be a miracle if I had kids.” When the laughter died down, he continued, “Actually, I hope to. None are on the way right now, but we’re working on it.” TheWreckers opened the show to a house that was almost fullbythetimetheywenton.Michelle BranchandJessica Harp fronted a five piece band that includes Branch’s husband, bass player Teddy Landau. Their harmonies have never sounded better. The best news is, as the bill’s only other live act, they get a full 45 minutes. That allows the duo to not only go deep into their album, but also enables them to add “Love Me Like That,” a song from Branch’s Hotel Paper solo CD. The tour’s “opening act” is L.A.-based DJ Debonair, whoentertainedthecrowdwithaverywiderangeofmusicbefore the show and after the Wreckers. Urban’s manager Gary Borman told me it was Keith’s idea as a way to keep the momentum going. The momentum is just beginning to build for Urban, who has elevated his show and joined the ranks of Country’s other superstars. (LH)
