Since the last Community Update in March 2009 several milestones for the project have been achieved. These have included:

Naming of the ‘Gallipoli Underpass’ in memory of our ANZAC’s bravery Opening of the Gallipoli Underpass to traffic in March 2009Completion of the feature walls within the underpassFinal asphalting works on ANZAC HighwayRe-instatement of footpaths and pedestrian access at all intersection approachesLandscaping – irrigation, mulching and major plantings Design of four feature walls honouring our service men and women in the Royal Australian Navy, Army, Air Force and New Zealand Defence ForceCommemorative opening of the ANZAC Memorial Garden and planting of a single lone pine, 94 years to the day, after the Battle of Lone Pine ended.

The construction is on track to be fully completed before the end of 2009.

Inside this last edition of the Community Update is a plan showing the final traffic and access arrangements for South Road and ANZAC Highway. These arrangements are expected to become operational in early September 2009.

The remaining construction activities of the $118 million Gallipoli Underpass are primarily focused on completing all footpaths, property driveways and landscaping on the old South Road. These finishing touches are expected to be completed by early September (dependent on weather conditions).

After this, the final traffic and local road access arrangements will be put into place. No further works will be undertaken until the end of October / early November when the warmer weather allows the last layer of asphalt to be placed along the full length of South Road between Hare Street and Norman Terrace. This work, along with the final line marking on South Road, will complete the Gallipoli Underpass as scheduled by the end of November 2009 (approx.)

What are the final works to be completed?

Our final say!DTEI and its contractor, AdelaideConnect, would sincerely like to thank the local community and road users for their ongoing patience and cooperation during the construction period of almost 2½ years. What are the final key traffic and access arrangements? The plan above shows the final traffic and access arrangements around the intersection that will be in place from early to mid September 2009, once all the works are completed, with the exception of the final layer of asphalt on South Road. These arrangements are outlined below:

Traffic access at the intersection• Three lanes of through traffic in both directions on ANZAC Highway will be operational at all times.

• Right turns from ANZAC Highway onto South Road in both directions will be reinstated. These will be provided via two designated right turn lanes at the traffic signalised intersection.

• Left turns from South Road onto ANZAC Highway in both directions i.e. towards Glenelg and the City.

• Left turn from ANZAC Highway (heading south) via a single slip lane will allow free flow traffic movements to be made onto South Road.

• Left turn from ANZAC Highway (heading north) onto South Road.

• The U-turn facilities near the intersection on ANZAC Highway will continue to be available near Grosvenor Street and Berkley Avenue.

Pedestrian access• Pedestrians will be able to cross South Road and ANZAC Highway via traffic signals on all approaches of the intersection.

• Pedestrian refuges on South Road (near the tramline) and on ANZAC Highway near Park Street will also provide crossing points for pedestrians.

• The Everard and Barwell Avenue traffic signalised intersection also provides another pedestrian access point across South Road.

Cyclist access• Dedicated cycle lanes on ANZAC Highway through the intersection and on South Road in the underpass will be operational.

Local street access• Mortimer Street will be re-opened as left in and left out only.• Basnett Street will be re-opened as left out only.• Garfield Avenue will be re-opened as left in and left out only.

How well have you been kept informed about this project? An evaluation of the community engagement processes for the project is being undertaken. The purpose of the evaluation is to find out how effective the different communication methods have been in keeping the local community, road users and other stakeholders well informed about the project. Your participation in this process is greatly appreciated and will be used by DTEI to determine what are the preferred and ‘best practice’ communication methods for use on future transport infrastructure projects.

A feedback form has been inserted in the Community Update for your use. Please take a few minutes to complete and return the form by no later than Friday 11 September 2009.You can also complete the form online at www.adelaideconnect.com.au by clicking on the ‘community engagement survey’ link.
