SynopsisSHORT SYNOPSIS:

URBAN COUNTRY is a coming-of-age family/faith-friendly drama featuring Faith, an 18-year-old girl from the city who moves to a horse ranch in the country to help her dying mother. An obvious fish-out-of-water, Faith learns to embrace the country lifestyle and ultimately chooses the importance of family, hard work and helping others to achieve her dreams.

URBAN COUNTRY is a fish-out-of-water, coming-of-age family/faith-friendly drama starring Brighton Sharbino (MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN) as Faith, an 18-year-old city girl who lives with her absent but dutiful father David, played by Jason London. As a young adult without guidance, Faith picks up with the wrong crowd and spends her time dodging local law enforcement and hanging out with her skateboarding gang. Warden Tono, played by Lou Diamond Phillips (LA BAMBA), helps Faith consider finding a new group of friends. The tide turns when Faith receives a message from her mother Anna, played by Candice Barley, who had left the city life a few years prior to run a horse ranch in the deep South. Faith could not understand why anyone would want to live outside the big city and chose to stay with her Dad.

When Anna asks her daughter to visit her in Mississippi, Faith rejects her, so Anna has no choice but to tell her the truth, that she is very ill and wants to spend time with her daughter. Faith agrees and soon finds herself on a horse ranch, doing chores, and learning the country lifestyle with an obvious learning curve. Even Faith’s friends from the city are enticed to visit and hilarious events occur as they adjust to a new lifestyle.

Anna unfortunately takes a turn for the worse and passes on. Her ranch hand Blake and his younger brother Corey work alongside Faith in following in her mother’s footsteps as she learns to run the ranch and love the country. In the end, Faith must choose between reuniting with her carefree but destructive urban lifestyle or continuing down a new bright path filled with hard work and pride in the country. Faith struggles to figure out who she really is and where she really belongs. What she learns about ranch life, the importance of family, hard work, and about herself on this journey grounds her in a way that she never believed possible.

Teddy Smith is a Louisiana born and raised filmmaker. He first received attention in 2009 with his documentary short CLOSED FOR STORM, which was a visually striking tour of the Six Flags theme park in New Orleans after being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The film received over 1 million views within 24 hours of being released on YouTube. Roger Ebert described the film as a “A tour of desolation. Haunting.”

In 2010, Teddy joined the International Cinematographers Guild and began working as a camera operator for legendary ASC cinematographers Jack Green (UNFORGIVEN, ABSOLUTE POWER), Theo Van de Sande (BLADE, CRUEL INTENTIONS, WAYNE’S WORLD) and Antonio Calvache  (IN THE BEDROOM). His role as an operator allowed him to work closely with and learn from award winning directors Haney Abu Assad  (PARADISE NOW, OMAR), Wayne Kramer (THE COOLER) and Michael Radford (1984, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE). In 2012, Teddy was accepted into the prestigious Society of Camera Operators.

Teddy has a distinct visual style. To tell a story, he’ll take the camera wherever it needs to go. He used military rebreathers to dive sunken aircraft carriers hundreds of feet below the surface of the ocean during filming of THE ABANDONED GULF, dangled precariously from helicopters during filming of  THE DEMENTED and worked extreme dolly and track shots on LEFT BEHIND starring Nicolas Cage. 

In 2014, Teddy Smith directed his first feature film A GIFT HORSE starring John Schneider and Kyla Kennedy . In 2016 Teddy directed RACE TO WIN starring Danielle Campbell and Luke Perry. URBAN COUNTRY is Teddy’s third film he has directed.
