The Hawea community gets together on our national day to enjoy being New Zealanders and to show our love for our community and the outdoors.

To add spice to the day we compete as “Town v’s Country”. This is the eleventh year the celebrations have taken place and the score stands at a tantalising “five all”.

Celebrations start on Friday evening 5th February with a quiz at the community centre. On Saturday - Waitangi Day - activities start at 9.00 am and include cricket, bowls, netball, tennis, pétanque, golf, trolley derby, touch and volleyball – plus novelty races for those aged under 7 years. To add colour to

the competitions, town competitors wear Blue and country competitors wear Red.

At 4.00pm we come together as a community for the “Top Town Challenge” concluding with the ever popular tugs of war and lolly scramble. The day ends with a community BBQ and fun activities for the kids. We encourage all residents and visitors to Hawea to take part - either as participants, spectators or helpers – and show what a great New Zealand community we are.

For information on activities and events go to the website: www.haweacommunity.co.nz.

WANAKA

As the summer holiday period comes to an end, local Police are still busy with a number of driving complaints and criminal offending throughout the Wanaka area. With the weather being less than perfect at the moment, we ask that boaties and motorists make good driving decisions over the next few weeks.

On 18th January, Police attended two separate crashes near the summit on the Crown Range Road towards Queenstown. The wet road may have contributed to both vehicles leaving the road.

The arrest of a male offender for a number of burglaries in and around Hedditch St has been well covered in local media. A trickle of theft complaints come into the station daily and these could be related. Anyone in that vicinity

asked to contact Police if you have property missing.

On the 20th a vehicle was impounded and the driver

to return to Christchurch by bus.

On the 21st an Audi vehicle crashed on the Hawea Dam. It was driven off with its headlights off, leaving behind debris scattered over the road. Anyone knowing the location of that vehicle is asked to contact local Police.

On the 22nd two trees near the BP Wanaka were snapped off in an act of stupidity. Anyone knowing who was responsible is asked to contact local Police.

On the 23rd a local male was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend in Wanaka. The incident was witnessed by a number of people and the matter is being followed up by Police.

During the evening of the 24th, a male was arrested

refused entry due to a high level of intoxication. His reward was a broken water pipe and a free cold shower. His parents were not impressed.

Police ask that motorists take care on our roads and continue to be vigilant of the increased number of runners and cyclists training hard for the Wanaka Challenge next month.

Have a safe week.

TOP TIP: Windows 10 – Should you update? Our advice, at this stage, is to hold off upgrading to Windows 10,

particularly if you are running Windows 7.We have seen a number of customers who have upgraded,

experienced issues, then want to roll back. This is possible but is not always 100% clean.

Don’t worry, the “free” upgrade is available until next August, so we recommend waiting until Windows 10 has been out for a few more

months and most of the bugs are sorted.
