With Wanakas seasonal influxes, increasing tourist numbers and CBD getting increasingly busy Wanaka Police are setting up a new Community Patrol for the area to assist Police in their crime prevention activities.

The Community Patrol will be run entirely by volunteers, in conjunction with local Police, and work with the Community Patrols of NZ organisation who will provide professional advice, training and resources to the new group once established.

It is envisaged the “patrol” will have an equipped vehicle operating Friday and Saturday nights as well as busy event times. Volunteers would be asked to work just one or two evenings a month and provide those extra

“eyes and ears” to help keep Wanaka a safe environment for all.

A public meeting is to be held tomorrow night Thursday 27th March, 7pm at the Lake Wanaka Centre – Armstrong Room for interested volunteers.

There will be a presentation from Community Patrols of New Zealand and an opportunity to register your interest in becoming part of the team.

All Community minded people are invited to attend.

For further information please contact Mike Thomas at the Wanaka Police 443 7272. See you there!

WANAKA

Over the last week, Wanaka Police have been called to deal with a range of incidents from a theft through to a serious assault.

On 17th March we received a complaint of damage to a shade cloth at the Aspiring Early Learning Centre in Warren Street. The Centre has spent $14,000 on their shade cloths and these must not be used as trampolines by MAC students. I have a pair of Orange 'Fila' size 38 1/2 sports shoes left at the scene which I would like to return to their owner. If they belong to your child then you can claim them at the Wanaka Police Station. Also on the 17th, an iPhone 4s was stolen from a table at Fitzpatrick's Bar, so we remind patrons of bars in and around Wanaka to secure their valuables.

On the 18th March Police attended a serious vehicle crash north of Makarora involving a head-on between two vehicles, one which had crossed the centre line. Victims were transported to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter and the Wanaka Medical Centre by road.

On the 21st March a 57yr old local man was processed for drink driving with a very high reading. He has since received a lengthy disqualification and a large fine.

On the evening of the 22nd March, there was an incident at the Opium Bar which resulted in a scuffle. Those involved being ejected from the bar - this was resolved with Police intervention.

At 12.30am on the morning of 23rd March, a male was seriously assaulted on the lakefront between Kai and the Doughbin. The male was set on by 3-4 local males and knocked to the ground and then kicked a number of times in the head. His injuries required an urgent trip to Dunstan Hospital in an ambulance. Wanaka Police are following some strong leads as to the identities of the assailants. Anyone that may have been involved, or witnessed the assault, is asked to please contact me at the Wanaka Police Station on 443 7272. Shortly after the above incident, Wanaka Police assisted Ambulance staff with a female who had fallen on a set of concrete steps behind the library. The woman missed a step and fell, causing a serious head injury - the ambulance staff and on-call doctor were amazing and saved this person’s life with their quick response and skill. Big ups to you guys!!!

Also on 23rd March in the evening, Police processed an under 20yr old drink driver. The legal limit for them is Zero, so a reminder that it's just not worth the risk. Remember to "be a Legend and look after your mates". Don't just think it, do it!

Wanaka Police are looking at setting up a "community patrol" which would be staffed by volunteers working with Police on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as event weekends, to give us those extra "eyes and ears" in our crime prevention work. We would like to invite community minded people to a meeting at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Thursday 27th March at 7.00pm for a presentation from Community Patrols of NZ and a discussion about setting up our own community patrol here in Wanaka (it would also cover Lake Hawea and surrounding areas). Local community patrols are a great initiative to keep our towns safe, so if you feel this is you please come along. The CPNZ website has further information or you can contact me at the station on 443 7272 if interested.

A reminder of our traffic focus this week - speed, restraints, intersections and cycle lights and helmets - no warnings folks. Easy Peasy!

Have a safe week.

THE HEART OF ROTTERDAM WAS ALMOST completely destroyed during World War II; 900 civilians were killed and 80,000 made homeless. The City Hall survived the bombing. After the war, Ossip Zadkine captured the event with his statue De Verwoeste Stad (‘The Destroyed City’) which stands in the centre of the city. Today, with a large number of public parks and gardens, Rotterdam is the greenest city in the Netherlands. The Messenger is available in Rotterdam on-line at www.mymessenger.co.nz.
