Dear Delegate

Welcome to The Marine Hotel in Troon for the 2009 UPMG conference. For many of you it has involved long journeys

within the UK and for some much further with considerable ‘time in transit’, thank you all for taking the trouble to join us.

I hope you will enjoy your stay and find the next few days a worthy investment of your time and effort.

A very special welcome to you if this is the first time at conference and the Executive have arranged to meet with

newcomers during Sunday evening prior to the reception to help you settle in. Make the most of being in the UPMG and

meet new friends whose experiences, advice and information may prove to be very useful to you in the future as yours

may be to them, networking and sharing experiences are some of our objectives.

Comments from previous years have been noted and wherever possible the programme has been modified to reflect

those comments and preferences. I believe that you will find it has been structured to give a broad base of topics to the

sessions but arranged so it is a little less hectic.

It would not be the UPMG conference without some social time and activities (other than customary ‘propping up the

bar’). On Monday evening laser shooting and a skittle alley have been arranged while Tuesday afternoon is reserved for a

visit to the castle, playing golf or just time to do something on your own.

Our associations with ACUP and NIPPA are again acknowledged by the attendance of representatives from both

organisations with Lisa Hoover of Bucknell University and Richard Griffin of Central Piedmont Community College

representing ACUP and Karen Birch of Unitech Auckland representing NIPPA who will each let us have an insight to how

things are in their parts of the world.

The conference could not go ahead without the massive support our sponsors give us. That generosity, including sponsoring

reception drinks, table wine, raffle prizes and other items throughout the conference programme happen because of their

generosity. Please show your appreciation by attending the exhibition which is there for you to say hello to old contacts

and meet new ones. Please visit each exhibitor to say hello, and don’t forget that you need to have a label from each of

them to be able to enter the grand raffle.

It would be wrong not to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in making the conference happen and in particular

to Roy Stares and those Executive members involved in the planning of the conference, they have done an excellent job.

I hope you will all join me in thanking them for the hard work they have put into ensuring that the conference will be the

success that I am confident it will be.

Finally, I very much regret that I am not able to be at conference this year because of family commitments but I am sure

you will be well looked after by the UPMG Deputy Chair, Rebecca Hanlon.

So please relax when you can and enjoy the conference for what it is - your conference.

Bruce WigleyChair of the UPMG

The ability to harness and manage emotions has been identified as a key leadership skill. How people manage anger, stress or fear has an immediate impact on performance. It is designed to help you to: •Understandandenhanceyourimpactonothers •Manageemotionsandstress •Learnmodelstocommunicatemoreeffectively •Appreciatethevalueofemotionalintelligencetobusinesssuccess

Chair: Simon Hampton-Matthews

1150-1230 Gailes Suite Session 2: “Managing in the Financial Squeeze” Peter Vincent Vincent Consulting

The recession has brought mixed views and blessings to the world of in-house design and print. Should you invest for the future? Can you afford to, or are you fighting for survival? Getting the best out of what you have can be a challenge and keeping abreast of opportunities such as colour management and web-to-print isn’t always easy. Add the challenge of internal buyers doing their own thing and producing print runs on local devices and you’ve got some fun on your hands. In some public sector areas, Framework Agreements have reared their heads, giving procurement activists a revitalised ‘toy’ to play with (should I have said ‘tool’ there?).

What is relevant is why any commercial printer should be able to justify being cheaper than an in-house unit. Surely speed, value for money, waste control, security, versatility ... or in print language, bending over backwards ... are what help in-house units potentially to stand out. But is that what’s happening in your operation, and how close is your dialogue with internal clients? These are some of the aspects that need focus. Print units are not immune from the recession so no-one should be complacent

1200-1230 Gailes Suite(members only) Session 7: “Securing your in-plant’s position in the university” Lisa Hoover Director: Administrative Services, Bucknell University

Many in-plant printing organisations have made it a goal to become more engrained in the core mission of their university. In some cases, in-plant organisations are sometimes viewed as “just another vendor” on campus. In the current economic situation, the goal to align your department with the core mission of your university has become more important than ever.

With declining print volumes, the key to success will be to find other ways to position ourselves for the future. At Bucknell University, a communications reorganisation has meant that the in-plant printing organisation has been integrated into the communications and marketing division, and has taken on responsibility for designing and producing all university publications. Those publications include the university magazine, admissions recruiting pieces and development fund-raising pieces.

Please remember to arrange to clear bedrooms by 1100.

0930-1010 Gailes Suite(members only) Session 8: “Looking Forward - Looking for Opportunities”. Karen Birch Nippa President Copy Centre Manager Unitech

In these challenging times in NZ we are always exploring the ways we can increase the amount of print and paper being used in NZ. It’s about looking at how we can turn back some of what is being lost in the industry in this economic climate. We need to shift some of the negative perceptions of print and paper that influence the communication / marketing choices being made by our printing customers.

The current economic climate is an ideal time for In-house print organisations to work on internally driven productivity improvement and training and development. It’s important that we invest in our employees so they are able to complete their jobs well and take on new responsibilities in the workplace when needed.

Squeezing ourselves through each month of this current economy crunch, we find agreement on one point. Economists, employers, employees and financial pundits concur that uncertainty remains the constant feature of the new economic order. However, that’s a good reason for us to prepare for the more predictable times ahead. The question is: “What can we do to face down the credit crunch?”

Gailes Suite 1135-1205 Session 10: “Justifying Equipment and Software Acquisitions” (members only) Richard Griffin Director, Central Piedmont Community College

Want: to require or need. Wish: to desire; long; yearn (www.Dictionary.com) If you believe your in-plant is an acquisition away from really benefiting your institution, and you’re willing to do the work that separates the intentionality of wanting from the passivity of wishing, then this session is for you .

Software/equipment acquisition, like everything else in life, is a process, and if you take the right steps then you’ll get the right outcome. If you come knowing what you want for your inplant and are ready to participate in the process, you will leave with the

beginning framework in your hand for your own situation on how to place the acquisition you want in your in-plant.

Chair: Andrew Scott

1210-1240 Gailes Suite (members only) Session 11: “Conference Feedback”

The Programme Planning Group thought it would be a good idea to get feedback from delegates immediately at the end of conference instead of trying to collect this by email later. So here is your chance to say what did and what did not work and to give some pointers for the 2010 conference.
