Dear Delegate,

On behalf of the UPMG, and the executive, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2011 UPMG Conference ‘Rising to the Challenge’, in Redworth Hall, County Durham. The programme this year is packed with a wide variety of presentations which I hope will support and motivate you ready to rise to the challenges that you may have in the coming year.

If it is your first time at our conference I look forward to meeting you at the newcomer’s reception on Sunday evening, where you have the opportunity to meet all the executive as well as other new delegates in a relaxed informal environment. I am sure you will both enjoy yourself, and benefit from attending the conference, please be sure to ask if you are unsure about anything.

For our regular delegates I am delighted to see you once again, and I hope that you again enjoy our conference. This year we have planned our conference following the feedback that you gave from Torquay 2010.

I would like to offer a very warm welcome to our Keynote Speaker this year - Ray Chambers who has over 30 years experience managing and directing printing plants in the US. We can also look forward to presentation on topics this year that include;- employment law in a nutshell; challenging technologies; and chain of custody with PEFC; I hope you will find all the presentations useful.

I am also pleased to welcome Catherine Chambers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University on behalf of ACUP, and Graham Lowe from Staffordshire County Council on behalf of APCOM; and looking forward to their presentations. We are always pleased to strengthen our links with other professional bodies involved in print, and value the benefits we have experienced over the years. Please take some time to introduce yourselves to Cathy and Graham over the next few days.

I would like to thank our conference sponsors and exhibitors for their continued support, as their valuable contribution enables the holding of this event each year. Within the conference programme there are plenty of networking opportunities for you to discuss and meet with the suppliers and colleagues, and please take time to visit the exhibition during the breaks in conference sessions. Please ensure that you collect all your supplier stickers to gain entry into our prize draw on Wednesday morning with some great prizes.

As always the busy conference programme is accompanied by a full social calendar. In a change from tradition we are having a fancy dress medieval banquetl on Monday evening, I hope that you all enjoy this, and that no-one gets put into the stocks for misbehaving!! On Tuesday our networking afternoon is a visit to the city of Durham with an opportunity to visit the Cathedral, which was voted the best loved building in Britain in 2001. Our Awards Dinner is on Tuesday Night and will be a night to remember as we celebrate the excellence in university print today. We also look forward to announcing the winner of the APME branding competition at the awards night.

I hope that you enjoy the programme over the next few days; I look forward to meeting and speaking to you all during the conference.

Bishop Suite 0935 - 1015 Session 1: KEYNOTE “Critical Success Factors” (members only)

Ray ChambersChambers Management Group

Managing an in-plant carries a unique set of challenges when times are good. We are expected to be better-cheaper-faster in print production, protect the

University’s brand, tutor customers through the ordering and file submission process, and be “green” in the process.

Now, with a struggling economy and falling revenues, printing and copying costs are one of the first areas targeted for cost reduction.

Are there factors that can improve the in-plant’s chances of survival in these turbulent times?

We think so. This presentation will discuss two factors that are frequently overlooked:measuring what you manage, and telling your story.

Chair: Andrew Scott

1105-1145 Bishop Suite(members only) Session 2 Change or Wither on the Vine (CMRT part 1)

Brian Chillcott Senior Partner Reprographic Business Services

Brian has worked across the reprographic industry as both customer and provider, including FM management. He places great importance on dynamic Customer Relationship Management principles (CRM). With the ever increasing pressure on inplant printing to maximise turnover and increase revenue, it essential that Printroom staff and management raise the bar across all operational and relationship management activities.

As new intakes of students demand better and more dynamic services it is paramount that UPMG members use proven CRM techniques to ensure their customer service is better than that provided by external printing organisations. Chair: Francis Reis

1150-1230 Bishop Suite(members only) Session 3: Customer Relationship Management Techniques (part 2) Brian Chillcott Senior Partner Reprographic Business Services

Bishop Suite 1400-1445 Session 4: An Introduction to Certified Paper (members only) for the Printing Industry Alun Watkins

PEFC UK National Secretary

In response to the print buyer’s interest in providing assurance of sustainable sourcing to their customers, the majority of the UK’s leading paper merchants are

now able to offer a range of certified papers under schemes such as the PEFC (Progamme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).

PEFC certification is one of the easiest ways of demonstrating that virgin fibre comes from responsibly managed forests that have been independently certified

against a credible forest management certification scheme. Certification also ensures that raw materials and products are tracked through the supply chain using

chain of custody certification at every step of the process.

The presentation will aim to inform delegates about the history of certification schemes, along with the current legal and political agenda. In addition delegates

will learn about what is involved in getting their own chain of custody certification, implementing systems for certification and the benefits that may be gained. With

the growth in companies adopting strict Corporate Social Responsible policies, the demand for certified paper products is only going to increase and means that this is

something that you can no longer afford to ignore.

The session will address issues such as: What are individuals’ basic employment rights? How should I handle a disciplinary meeting? What should a ‘model’ letter of warning contain? Can I address persistent, intermittent absence - and if so, how?

Prince Suite 0930 - 1015 Session 10: How APCOM members are rising to the challenge Graham Lowe

APCOM Vice President

APCOM was established in 1979, and celebrated its thirtieth anniversary at the Kirklees Conference in 2009. Records have now come to light which indicate it

actually started in1974. APCOM is an organisation for print and communication managers employed within the public sector, with an active membership of over 100 individuals covering 85 authorities across the UK. The Association exists to provide a

network of support and personal development for its members. The public sector at large is facing unprecedented pressures to drive to down costs

and improve efficiencies in line with central government directives. As a direct result many authorities have evaluated the way their

print is managed, both bought in and produced inhouse.

Over the past 12 months many APCOM members have been subject to reviews, rationalisation and in some cases closure. The thirst for “cashable” savings has put many

print inplants at risk, and there is no sign of a change in direction.

APCOM Vice President, Graham Lowe, offers an insight as to how its members are fighting back and “rising to the challenge” to enable not only business survival but business growth. Most significantly the internal print unit was re-branded as Print

Commissioning Services (2006) and relocated in to purpose built facilities in 2009. Between 2008 and 2011 PCS have won eight national print awards; recognition of

unit’s focus on continuous improvement and development.
