LATIN AMERICA CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP
LOCATION: BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA
DATES: OCTOBER 26 - 28, 2005
PURPOSE: TO PROVIDE WATER MANAGERS THROUGHOUT LATINAMERICA (SOUTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA) WITH INFORMATIONAND ACCESS TO EARTH OBSERVATIONS AND TECHNOLOGIES TOSUPPORT IMPROVED WATER MANAGEMENT.
PARTICIPANTS: WATER MANAGERS, POLICY MAKERS INWATER RESOURCES, OPERATIONAL HYDROLOGISTS ANDHYDROLOGICAL RESEACHERS IN SOUTH AND CENTRAL AMERICA.
CONCLUSION: A PROGRAM IS NEEDED IN LATIN AMERICA TO ENCOURAGEINTERACTIONS BETWEEN USERS AND INFORMATION PROVIDERS. IGWCOAND CONAE WILL WORK TOGETHER TO DEVELOP A FRAMEWORK FORSUCH A RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS PROGRAM.

IGWCO (ALONG WITH GEWEX, ETC) WAS PART OFTHE SUCCESSFUL EFFORT IN ADVOCATING THECONTINUATION OF TRMM.
A GEO WORK PLAN ITEM TO DEVELOP AN ON-GOINGCAPACITY BUILDING ACTIVITY FOR LATIN AMERICA BUILTON THE TIGER MODEL RESULTED FROM THEBUENOS AIRES CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP.
COLLABORATION DEVELOPED BETWEEN IGWCO,IPWG AND GEWEX IN THE AREA OF PRECIPITATION.
IGWCO HAS HELPED INCREASE THE REGIONAL AWARENESS OF THE VALUE OF SATELLITE DATA
WHAT’S NEW FOR IGWCO IN 2006-WMO IS THE NEW LEAD FOR THE IGWCO EXECUTIVE. WMO IS WORKING ON THEIR PROMISE TO HIRE A CONSULTANT FOR A YEAR ON A PART-TIME BASIS.
-A JOINT GARS-UNESCO-IGWCO GROUNDWATER WORKINGGROUP IS BEING LAUNCHED.
- TWO SESSIONS WERE HELD AT WORLD WATER FORUM IV: INCLUDING A SIDE EVENT ON MEASURING WATER FROMSPACE (IN RESPONSE TO A GEO TASK).
- A JAXA-LED JOINT IGWCO/ GEO CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP ON THE WATER CYCLE AND WATER MANAGEMENTIN SE ASIA WILL BE HELD IN BANKOK, THAILAND IN SEPTMEBER.
- COORDINATION WITH GEO ON SEVERAL WORK PLAN GOALS INCLUDING ONE OR TWO WATER CYCLE WORKSHOPS.
-DEVELOPMENT OF A PROPOSAL FOR A GEO ”COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE” FOR THE WATER CYCLE
