Overview
• Background
• Geographical spread and location of trainees
• Role of the National Healthcare Science School of Genetics
• Training Programmes – STP and PTP
• 2011 and onwards
Pilot programme initiated in April 2009 with training commencing for HCS and HCSP in October 2009.
Two cohorts (2009 and 2010) of HCS and HCSP trainees spread across 16 laboratories in England and Wales
PTP is 2 year work based programme for 2009 and 2010 only (as pilot programme). To be rolled out as 3 year integrated BSc from 2011
STP is aligned with MSC programme to be rolled out from 2011 for Genetics
STP has part time masters programme delivered by The University of Nottingham
Training programmes are overseen by the National Healthcare Science School of Genetics hosted by NHS West Midlands Workforce Deanery
Online assessment tool supports work based assessment

Progress
• Training programmes externally evaluated – Constructive criticism which is informing development
• STPs all doing well at MSc• Practitioners had first annual progress review ( same
standard as GT assessments )• Online assessment tool being upgraded• National training days for practitioners being looked at• Postgraduate diploma being considered for HCSPs
Moving to the Future
• MSC has been approved by new ministers • Mentioned in dispatches
–We will increase the use of highly qualified clinical scientists in the NHS to free up doctors to focus on the work that only they can do, as part of the Modernising Scientific Careers programme. This programme will save the NHS in excess of £250 million per year.
Practitioner Training
• Integrated BSC – in 2010 – ie already started !– University of West of England
• 5 students– University of Bradford
• 4 students
• Next year– Also potentially London
Healthcare Science Practitioners Training
• 1st cohort out of degree in 2013
• Potential for in house training programme following current model to be an interim training programme
• GT training programme will not recruit new trainees
Healthcare Scientists Training Programme
• Will be rolled out in 2011 for most disciplines• Genetics to be part of Blood Sciences and Cellular
Science• Looking at new model which combines both options for
rotations• HEIs will be commissioned soon for next year
• Introductory HEI block just 1 month not 3 as says in diagram
Career grades
• Work continuing on Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) and (Accredited Specialist Expertise) ASE
• Work beginning on staff career grades 1 – 4
• Work force profile being reviewed
