May 5, 2015, Adams County and the Spanish Flu

Journalist and author Jim Rada will present “Adams County and the Spanish Flu.” As World War I wound down in the fall of 1918, the world faced a new threat. This enemy did not attack directly. It came stealthily on the air and more deadly than the mustard gas that Allied soldiers had feared on the battlefield. It was Spanish Flu.

2 April - June 2015

From The DirectorI think it is safe to say that the winter weather is finally moving on and giving way to spring. The staff and volunteers are looking forward to serving our many patrons as the weather improves.

The Adams County Historical Society continues to do the best we can with the resources that we have available to us. By now you should have received the Spring Appeal and we hope you will consider a donation to the Society to assist us in continuing our work. We do our best to meet budgetary needs through grants from foundations and government agencies, membership dues, gift shop sales, and research fees; however, the appeals we send for additional financial support are vital to meet the Society’s financial obligations, advance projects, and continue to expand services.

Keep an eye on our events page at www.achs-pa.org/events to check for programs and events that come together between newsletters. If you are receiving our newsletters via e-mail, we can keep you up to date on the latest news from the Society.

As always, we sincerely appreciate the support of our members.

Regards,

Benjamin Neely, Executive DirectorThe  Pennsylvania  Historical  &  Museum  Commission  Awards  Grant  to  ACHS

The   Adams   County   Historical   Society   would   like   to   thank   the   Pennsylvania  Historical   &   Museum   Commission   for   awarding   a   $4,000   general   operation  support  grant  in  2014.    General  operating  support  funds  are  the  most  difficult  to  raise   and   so   we   are   grateful   to   the   PHMC   for   offering   this   grant   program   that  helps  support  these  kinds  of  expenses  to  the  Society.

Russell Swody

We have sad news about our former executive director, Russell Swody. Russell passed away on March 24, 2015. He was only 51 years old. He was the executive director of the Ad-ams County Historical Society from 2000 until 2004. Under his direction, the Society added members, volunteers, operating hours, and increased funding. Russell always made himself available to his successors when there was a need for advice and he will be missed.

David English

The Adams County Historical Society lost a wonderful friend and supporter with the passing of David English. Dave was a member of the board of trustees for the Society. He gave generously of his time and always provided sound advice. Dave will be missed.

Franklin O. Loveland

The Adams County Historical Society wishes to acknowledge a bequest of $20,000 from the estate of longtime member, Dr. Franklin O. Loveland. Dr. Loveland made many generous contributions to ACHS over the years. A portion of his collection of Littco cast iron toys, produced in Littlestown, PA, are important pieces in the museum collection and have always drawn attention when on exhibit.

2nd Annual ACHS Benefit Golf Outing Friday, September 25, 2015

The Adams County Historical Society is holding its annual golf tournament fundraiser on Friday, September 25, 2015 at the Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown, PA. Our 2015 event will again benefit the Society's classroom outreach program for local students and, as we prepare to unveil our innovative and hands-on approach to historical learning, it is important to remember that elementary and secondary schools curricula are becoming more and more focused on science and mathematics. We continue to feel that student education cannot be complete without knowledge of events, both local and national, that have shaped our world to this time. Although this in not an inexpensive endeavor for the Society, we sincerely feel that the benefits of this program to Adams County students will be exceedingly worthwhile. Whether you are a golfer, an event sponsor, prize donor, or volunteer, we are so appreciative of your help to make this year's golf tournament fundraiser a success! Our goal for 2015 is to raise $20,000 and with the strong support of ACHS members and the Adams County community, we are confident that we will be able to reach or exceed our goal.

of the men of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Mobile Radio Broadcasting Companies during World War II. It begins with the establishment of a secret camp in Gettysburg, PA, and the specialized training in military intelligence and propaganda services that the men received there. It then follows these men abroad: to further training in Britain, to the D-Day landings, Battle of the Bulge, Conquest of Germany, and liberation of the concentration camps. It includes stories from those German- and Austrian-born men from Sharpe who returned in U.S. army uniform to their old hometowns, and concludes with a discussion of the soldiers’ immediate postwar activities as translators, interpreters, radio broadcasters, and journalists in the American zones of occupation in Germany and Austria.

Tuesday, October 6, 2015: Adams County in the French and Indian War

Join Timothy H. Smith, head research assistant for the Adams County Historical Society, as he explores how world events affected the people who once lived in the area of Adams County. The so-called French and Indian War (1754-1763) was in essence, a power struggle between the English and French over the control of the North American continent. By 1756 the war had spread into the West Indies, onto the continent of Europe, and eventually India. Many historians have termed the conflict the First World War. At the time, the settlements located here were in their infancy. French and Indian forces raided the settlements, pillaging and burning and spreading fear. The local inhabitants were forced to either flee the area, or raise militia forces and build forts to defend their homes.

The   Adams   County   Historical   Society   is  assisting   with   the   new   exhibits   at   the  Gettysburg   Heritage   Center   (formerly   the  site   of   the   American   Civil   War   Wax  Museum).     The   Heritage   Center   utilizes  artifacts,   historical   documents,   interactive  displays,   and   3-‐D   productions   to   help  visitors  gain  a  better  understanding  of   the  events  that  took  place   in  the  town  before,  during   and   after   the   battle.     The   Society  has   helped  bolster   the   displays  with   loans  of   objects   and   photographs   from   our  collection   that   help   interpret   agricultural

life   in   Adams   County,   local   men   who  fought  in  the  war,  and  the  aftermath  of  the  Battle  of  Gettysburg.

This   partnership   with   the   Gettysburg  Heritage   Center   has   provided   a   great  opportunity   for   ACHS   to   display   objects  from   the   collections   since   we   no   longer  have   a   gallery   of   our   own   to   do   so.     We  hope   that   you  will   have  an  opportunity   to  visit   this   new   venue   in   town   and   see   the  contributions  made  by  the  Society.

The Heritage Center utilizes artifacts, historical documents, interactive displays, and 3-D productions to help visitors gain a better understanding of the events that took place in the town before, during and after the battle.
