This year’s Ivan Hanchard Golf Tournament was a sunny success, bringing the road builder and maintenance, construction and supplier community together and raising thousands of dollars for charity.

Taking place May 3rd, 2019 at the beautiful Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey BC, the Ivan Hanchard Golf Tournament celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

The annual tournament raises funds for the Betty Spalton Scholarship Fund, helping post-secondary students pursuing a career related to the heavy construction and road building industries, as well as the BC Children’s Hospital. This year’s event raised an impressive $25,000 for BC Children’s Hospital and a generous $5,000 for the Betty Spalton Scholarship Fund.

BCRB&HCA would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our Ivan Hanchard Golf Tournament sponsors. You make this wonderful event possible. Check out the winning teams from the 2019 tournament below!

Thanks to dozens of generous volunteers and sponsors, kids and their families had the opportunity to drive the Go Kart circuit and visit the interactive road safety booths at the 2019 Cloverdale Rodeo. This unique learning experience was geared towards teaching the next generation of drivers about road safety, especially the importance of paying attention when travelling through roadside work zones.

In addition to the Go Kart circuit for children aged 10-16, the event featured 3-wheeled electric Segways for kids over 8 and adults, and tricycles for kids aged 5-8 years old.

The Go Kart Experience is the brainchild of Bob Nielsen, Mainroad Group’s Director of Corporate Compliance.

“Safety awareness is exciting – the Go Kart Experience is an environment for young people that is both interesting and engaging. The event is focused on children because they are the next generation of drivers. At the same time, we know that parents also want to do the right thing, if their children are mentioning some of our key messages, like Cone Zone or Slow Down, parents will also become more conscious of their own driving” says Nielsen.

“We want to drive home the message that people need to slow down when approaching a Cone Zone, pay attention, and respect traffic control personnel managing the work zone and all roadside workers.”

A special thanks to our event sponsors:

ATS Traffic, Automobile Retailers Association, BC Roadbuilders & Heavy Construction Association, BCAA, BCCSA, Canadian Society of Safety Engineers, Cloverdale Rodeo, CSSE Lower Mainland, ICBC, Inland Group, Work Zone Safety Alliance, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, NAOSH BC, Surrey RCMP, Telus,TranBC, Vision Zero (Surrey), Western Rubber|Liberty Tire

Fraser River Pile and Dredge is the largest company of its kind in Canada, offering marine construction, pile driving and dredging. Started in 1911 as Fraser River Pile Driving by three men affectionately remembered as Charles, Perley and Stanley, driving piles and building docks on the shores of the Fraser River, when much of the work was done by true horse-power and steam engines, from these humble beginnings FRPD has evolved into a company capable of undertaking the largest and most complex marine construction projects in Canada. Employing more than 70 full-time staff members and over 200 hourly craft workers, their centre of operations remains close to their roots, just a few kilometers from the original 1911 location on the South Arm Fraser River.

Q & A with Mike Bevan-Pritchard, FRPD Vice President, Major Project Development

Q: What current projects does FRPD have underway?

FRPD has a number of marine construction, pile driving and dredging projects ongoing. One of the most inter-esting projects the company has ever undertaken and currently underway involves the environmental clean up of an area known as Randall Reef in Hamilton Harbour, one of the most contaminated sites in Canada. The project involves placing dredged contaminated lake bot-tom material into a containment area which when filled will be permanently capped and repurposed as a public space. The largest project we have underway is valued at approximately $400 million and is being done through a Joint Venture with Dragados Canada and Jacob Brothers Construction. The project is located at the Centerm Container Terminal in Burrard Inlet and once completed the project will add capacity for the terminal and improve off-terminal road and rail access for the facility.

Q: What do you consider a major accomplishment for FRPD?

In recent years our most significant achievement, rather than one single project, is our ability to form partnerships with other companies to allow us to participate in most of the larger infrastructure projects in BC. This approach has allowed FRPD to be involved in the construction of virtually every major bridge constructed in the lower mainland in the last 15 years, including the proposed Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project.

Q: What makes you proud to be a part of this company?

As a long time employee of FRPD extending back to the mid-1970’s, the aspect of the company I most admire is its longevity and the ability to attract and retain the most competent and skilled people in the industry. Many of our employees are also long term with several being multi-generational. With the hard work and dedication of our employees over the years FRPD has survived and flourished for more than 100 years to become one of the premiere construction companies in Canada.
