CLEMSON WOMEN’S GOLF TEAM “MEET & GREET”
After years of wishing and hoping, it is finally a reality. Clemson women’s golf is
here! So, to celebrate and welcome our new team, The Walker Course will host a
“meet and greet” for our members to meet these young ladies on Saturday afternoon,
September 14th at 2:00pm.
Every member is invited to come out to the practice range to meet and watch these
new stars practice. Coach J.T. Horton will introduce each player and share with us
their playing backgrounds. Then following the intros, we will have drinks and snacks
for everyone in attendance. To assist with planning, please call the golf shop to
RSVP.
Their fall schedule begins this weekend, September 8-10, at the Cougar Classic
hosted by the College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Charleston. Other
fall events include the Lady Paladin Invitational at Furman September 20-22; The
Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at UNC October 11-13; and The Landfall Tradi-
tion at the Landfall Country Club in Wilmington, NC. If you have a chance to watch
them play, don’t miss out!

Final Couples Twilight Results
It took all summer, but we finally got an entire nine hole round in on August 9th. The format was criss-cross-partners
captain’s choice. With an uneven number of couples, the team of Pete & Janet Santora had to double their score and when
they tallied the double score, it was the winner (70). Following play, everyone retired to The Cookout for burgers, dogs,
and shakes. After the treat, the Santora’s still received a nice golf shop credit total for their efforts.
Thanks to everyone that “tried” to play this summer. A very difficult season for twilight, but we will be ready to go
again in April of next year.
No Show Reminder
Tee time demand is at its’ peak for the year during the fall months. Please be sure to sign up only for the actual number
of golfers you plan to have in your group and to cancel any unneeded or reduced size tee time slots 24 hours in advance.
We need all of the space possible to fill the golf course during the crunch time. Thanks for your cooperation.

DON GARRETT, CGCS SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
August Status
Continued excess rain throughout August has us behind on many things such as edging, mulching, pruning, small
projects and weed control. Hopefully, we can catch up on these things this fall when things slow down a bit.
For the most part, we have been able to keep the greens, tees and fairways in good shape. I had hoped we could
aerify the fairways on holes 1 and 9 this month to break up some of the silt that was deposited during the floods. However
they never dried out long enough to perform the work. We plan to do some slicing in September that will hopefully get us
by until next spring when we will be very aggressive with aerification and topdressing to dilute the flood deposits.
#2 Bridge
The bridge to the back tees has been repaired and is back in operation as of August 26th. There is still some cleanup
work off the sides and some rip-rap to be placed below but we are back in business. We will get to the remaining work
when time permits.
Greens Aerification
Please note that the fall greens aerification is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday September 9th and 10 th. We plan
to use 5/8th inch coring tines and will topdress to fill the holes with sand. Recovery time is typically 10-14 days this time of
year. After all the rain this summer, they can really use it.
September Goals
Along with the greens aerification, we will be treating the course for fire ants which will be emerging with the
cooler temps, treating the tees for insects, applying a pre-emergence herbicide around all of the tees that will be overseeded,
edging bunkers, spraying for weeds, and treating the zoysia grass tees on 2, 4 and 13 for brown patch.
During the first week of September, we will raise the height of cut on the tees and fairways slightly to allow for
some extra cushion prior to the onset of winter dormancy. Overseeding of the practice tees and Par 3’s will occur in Octo-
ber.
#16 Green Renovation
The renovation of #16 green began a day late due to rain. However once we got going, it has gone very well. The
green was seeded on Saturday August 31.
The green will be slightly larger as we took it back out to near its original dimensions. In addition, the surface con-
tour will be slightly different due to irregularities in the existing greensmix depth. The greensmix should be 12 inches deep
and should match the contour of the gravel layer beneath for proper water management. Probing on a grid, we found depths
ranging from 7.5 to 13 inches. Every effort was made to get the final depth as close to 12 inches as possible.
Grow-in is expected to take 8-10weeks and is very weather dependent. In the meantime, enjoy the large cup on the
temporary green!
