Anita Stiens will be speaking in Kayenta on April 15 at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm in the “Room for Thought Room” in the Art Village. Southern Utah Alzheimer’s Association representa-tives and the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Society are continuing to work with area residents on early stage memory loss inter-vention, awareness and support for those diagnosed with the disease or for caregivers and working professionals.

Nextdoor

We are putting Nextdoor in place….

Nextdoor is a completely private on-line web-site environment that also offers two mobile apps, Nextdoor for iPhone and Nextdoor for Android. Best of all it just for our neighbors and our neighborhood.

It will help us keep up with everything that is going on in our neighborhood, lost dogs, events, things to sell or give away and we can share references for services we all need. One of the biggest values it offers is INSTANT communication - there is an urgent alerts feature, which makes it possible to blast out ur-gent information (flooding, road closures etc.) by text message as well as email.

It is truly private and only members who live within the bound-ary of our Nextdoor neighborhoods can join the website.

POETRY FOR THE THOUGHTFUL

AprilThe year’s at the springAnd day’s at the morn;

Morning’s at seven;The hillside’s dew-pearled;

The lark’s on the wing;The snail’s on the thorn;

God’s in His heaven -All’s right with the world!

~ Robert Browning

Oh, Spring is surely coming,Her couriers fill the air;

Each morn are new arrivals,Each night her ways prepare;I scent her fragrant garments,

Her foot is on the stair.~ John Burroughs

What delights us in the spring is more a sensation than an

appearance, more a hope than any visible reality. There is

something in the softness of the air, in the lengthening of the days, in the very sounds and odors of the sweet time, that

caresses us and consoles us after the rigorous weeks of winter.

~ Philip Gilbert Hamerton

Here is how it works:• Every neighbor signs in (URL below) using their real name and their physical address (no P.O. boxes). If you want to hide your address, that is possible after you register.• You then verify your physical address. That’s it.

Any information shared or posted on the site will never show up in Google or any other search engines. Also Nextdoor never shares your personal information with third-party advertisers.

The ability is also built in for members to control your email set-tings based on the types of messages you want to receive, and how often you would like to receive them. You can choose to receive emails about each new post, view the day’s activity in a daily digest, or turn off emails and check the website whenever you like for new posts from neighbors.

It is set up so we have one “neighborhood” that is all of Tavi-awk and one “neighborhood” that is the rest of Kayenta. We have created what is called a Nearby Neighborhood, so Taviawk can post to Taviawk only or anyone can click the box at the top of the post for “nearby neighborhood” and send a message to all of Kayenta.

Nextdoor allows us to easily create a private website to fa-cilitate communication among neighbors and build stronger neighborhoods. The more folks that join the stronger the neighborhood, so register today - it only takes a minute.

We get questions through our office about the Washington County Conservancy District, the main one is; What is the Wash-ington County Water Conservancy District and their Impact Fees?

in 1962 in response to a petition signed by the property owners of Washington County. The District is charged with conserving, devel-oping, managing and stabilizing water supplies within the county.

Starting in 2006, Impact Fees are due at the time of a Subdivi-sion Plat Recording. If the impact fees were not paid at that time (before 2006), then fees are due before a Building Permit can be issued. All subdivided lots in Kayenta the Taviawk Sub-division from Taviawk 7 and up have had the impact fees paid by the Developer at the time of the Subdivision Plat Recording. The Developer also has the choice on lots, subdivided in 2006 or later, of signing a promissory note, for the Impact Fee, which will be paid by the Developer when the individual lot is sold.The minimum Impact Fee charge is $6728.00 (2015) on lots of 10,000 square feet or less and every square foot above the 10,000 square feet is charged at a rate of $.6728. To keep the Impact Fee at the minimum amount on lots over 10,000 (which most in Kayenta are), the lot owner can sign and record a Water Conservation Easement which says that the lot owner will keep outdoor irrigation to a area of 5,000 square feet or less. With the building guidelines and lot disturbance allowances that Kayenta follows all lots in Kayenta are kept at the minimum which has created a water conserving development.

The Impact Fees that are paid to the Washington County Water Conservancy District are used for projects, current and future, that are designed to insure adequate water for Washington County’s future. For a list of the projects go to:http://www.wcwcd.org/projects/

I hope that this information was helpful and if you have any question in regards to water, homes or lots in Kayenta come by the sales office for a visit.

Thank you, Jeff, Kurt & Dianne

Gallery 873 Expansion

Gallery 873 in the Kayenta Art Village is expand-ing to display the work of photographer Charles Wood. He and his wife Cathy moved to Hawaii in February after closing the Earth and Light Gallery in the Art Village.

Over the last twenty-five years Charles has cre-ated a portfolio of fine art and documentary

images from the American Southwest and his world travels. He captures the beauty of the world with digital medium format cameras that are a giant step beyond the capabilities of typi-cal digital SLR systems. His images will be available on museum quality archival (long lasting) canvas at Gallery 873 along with his CDs, Blue Ray DVDs, and the new edition of the book Photo-graphing the Southwest by Laurent Martres.

Kayenta Art Village News - Spring 2015

Spring brings new life and energy to the desert and the art village awakens as well! Just as the seeds we planted last Fall spring from the earth, so does the Kayenta Center For The Arts but his is not the only spurt of energy that is happening! The courtyard of Xetava Gardens Cafe has been hopping with activ-ity as sun seekers sip on lattes and visitors and residents alike stroll the galleries, Labyrinth and Desert Arboretum. Plans are under way for the Kayenta Arts Foundation’s annual Street Painting Festival in April and we have new village businesses opening their doors within weeks.

Adding to the village this season, we welcome the photography of Charly C. Moore. This new gallery will open within a few weeks and occupies the expanded gallery at the south end of the village near Blue Raven Studio. Charly comes to Kayenta after residing in Page Arizona for many years where he owned and operated his gallery Mystic Canyon Light near Lake Powell.Moving on, Charlie Wood, Photographer and Owner of Earth and Light Gallery has traveled on to the Big Island of Hawaii to pursue other wonders of the world to capture in image but con-tinues to provide his photographic works of art to our local Gal-lery 873 which will expand its gallery an additional 350 square feet to exhibit his photographs. In its seventh year of operation in the village, Purple SageStudio has relocated and will now occupy the studio between the Kayenta Outdoor Theater and the popular Sacred Space Spa. Drop in and visit with Linda and Andrew who are very excited to inhabit the new gallery space!

At the north end of the village, in the new studio spaces please welcome the new village residents who include the studio of Sherrie Warren who teaches oil painting classes, the office of architect, Ariel Valli and coming soon Serenity Nail Boutique, owned and operated by Marilenna Di Fabio. Xetava Gardens Cafe, Blue Raven Studio, Zia Pottery Studio, Datura Gallery, Juniper Sky Fine Art Gallery, Gallery 873 and Sacred Space Spa are business that continue to thrive in the village. Stop and see what is new! Rediscover the place that visitors rate as one of the top places to visit in the area!

Semi-Permanent Street Painting Commissioned For The Art Village

Prior to Kayenta Art Foundation’s Annual Street Painting Festi-val, the Kayenta Art Village and Kayenta Arts Foundation has invited local artist and founder of the Kayenta Street Painting Festival, Aimee Bonham, to create a semi-permanent 3D street painting in the Kayenta Art Village.

The art of 3D street painting originated in 1982 by world re-nown street painter Kurt Wenner. Today many artists around the globe work to create these 3D images. What does it mean when we say that a painting is 3D? Basically this means that the art has been painted on the ground in a distorted way so that when you stand in the correct viewpoint (marked with foot-prints) the work appears to have a very strong sense of depth and form. The french had a term for it: “Trompe-l’oeil” or “tick of the eye”. An art technique that uses realistic imagery to cre-ate the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions.

Sponsored by the art village businesses for the Kayenta Arts Foundation, this painting will be a fun addition for those visit-ing the Kayenta Art Village. Visitors will be able to interact with the painting by creating photos while interacting with the 3D illusion. Artist Aimee Bonham explains, “with one person as the photographer standing at the “viewpoint” other visitors will be able to stand in certain spots on the painting (on top of delicate

If you come upon Aimee working in the village and she seems focused, allow her to work because she is on a strict timeline to get this done before the Street Painting Festival on April 25th and 26th.

Construction in the Kayenta Art Village Area

Kayenta Center For The ArtsFinal Plans have been approved by the city and permit/impact fees have been paid. Footings are in place and masonry walls are being erected. Drainage and SewerWest of the village you may have noticed additional excavation work in progress. As part of the village improvements planned for this year, upgrades in storm drainage are in progress. In conjunction with this improvement, preparations are underway for an outfall sewer line that will take waste water affluent from the village, through Ivins and tie into the Regional Waste-water Treatment Plant in Atkinville (south of Bloomington). At this time, this project does not affect existing residents who are currently connected to septic systems.

Recycling

Kayenta Development and Kayenta Art Village are advocates of our community’s efforts to recycle plastic, glass, paper and metal. For several years, we have offered a place for our neighbors to drop off recyclables in the “binnies” operated by Washington County Solid Waste just west of the art village. Our advocacyhas not gone without cost and time but we have gladly offered it for the greater good of the recycling community. As it has been said, “no good deed goes unpunished” and “for every ac-tion (however noble) there is an equal and opposite reaction”, our good deeds of recycling have generated noise and traffic by the use of the binnies and the collection of the materials. Nearby neighbors have been patient but with an increase in use, it’s time for a different location or solution to be explored. Today, Kayenta Development and Kayenta Art Village need to redirect our energies and can no longer provide space or man-agement for recycling. Kayenta Development and Kayenta Art Village are advocates for a permanent solution or location for recycling in our area but believe the solution needs to be offered by the municipali-ties or county.

For your continued recycling efforts, binnies are located in other locations around the county and in Ivins. For more infor-mation you can visit: http://www.wcsw.org/recycling/

Recycling binnies will be removed from their art village location within a few days. Thank you for your understanding.

The Street Painting Festival was the brain child of Aimee Bon-ham, a local artist whose vision was to bring art into the streets. This display of colorful, cultural diversity and imaginative im-ages offers two of life’s staples: beauty and creativity. Each year the Festival features student competition as well as invited artist competition. In 2014 a showing of a special documentary on street painting around the world was given and two interna-tional street painting artists delighted visitors as they produced their masterpieces. An amazing 3-D image was also completed by Ms. Bonham last year and this year she will create one of a more permanent nature. During the weekend Anat Ronen, a Texas artist, will be painting a wall mural in the village for year round enjoyment.

With the theme: “Rock, Stars, and Wildlife,” the Kayenta Street Painting promises fun for all. The Festival is free to the public. Two additional events are planned for Friday and Saturday eve-nings for which a nominal fee will be charged. A kick-off party marks the advent of the Festival, Friday April 24, with food, mu-sic, and dancing from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. Music will be provided by the fantastic local group Prime Time. Visitors can also sign up for a Star Gazing presentation Saturday evening.

The Street Painting Festival will take place Saturday, April 25th from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, April 26th from 10 am to 5 pm. There will be student competitions to observe, artists creations in progress, and a People’s Choice Award. Anyone who wants to try their own hand at chalk art may purchase a 2X 2 space of their own. The Festival is made possible by the Kayenta Arts Foundation and its sponsors who donate funds and in kind gifts, as well many, many volunteers who believe in being PART OF THE ART.

Fundraising is an ongoing challenge every day to support all of the homeless pets from Ivins and Santa Clara.

FIAS provides emergency health care, spay/neuter, vaccinations, general health care, food, litter and other needs to ensure the health and welfare of the pets entrusted to our care.

FIAS is pleased to announce we have been approved to join the AmazonSmile Charities Program. When you shop at AmazonS-mile, Amazon donates 0.05% of the purchase price to Friends of Ivins Animal Shelter.

Please bookmark this link: http://smile.amazon.com/ch/20-5845937 and support the homeless pets in the Ivins Animal Shelter &Adoption Center every time you shop! The FIAS Board and the homeless pets appreciate your generosity.

Local Animal Shelter Clarification

In our Area we have two groups working to save and shelter animals: INKAS and FIAS. They both have the best interests of animals in mind when doing their work. We appreciate everything the two groups do and are happy to be supporters of both. Last month we made a copy error when editing.

Correction: Kayenta Connec-tion, March edition, page 11. The Ivins Animal Shelter & Adoption Center Article. The end of the article on the “Shelter Dogs and Train-ing Program” referenced FIAS (Friends of Ivins Animal Shelter) for contact infor-mation and facebook page information. The correct contact information for this program is: INKAS (Ivins No Kill Animal Supporters)

Hike & Bike Trail

~ D a n C o r n e l i u s ~

Check out the new sign which has just been installed at the start of the Pickleball Hike and Bike Trail. The sign (and the trail head) are just inside the gates south of the Pickleball Court.

Most days you will see a variety of users on the trail now – hikers, dog walkers, trail run-ners, mountain bikers and theoccasional trail builder. With more users on the trail it looks more like a trail now. The trail

tread is firmest a couple days after a rain (or snow) – not so good the day after the precip.

The trail network now consists of five connected loops, each identified by a flag color which matches the loop’s color shown on the trail map (green, blue, white, yellow, red). Loop number six (purple flags) is now under construction south of the red loop.

The design strategy for the trail network has been to include lots of UM – that’s for undulating and meandering. This adds interest to the trail and tends to keep the speeds down of those pesty mountain bikers. The loops tend to get a bit more difficult as you go from north to south – perhaps a few more rocks and steeper climbs. Comments and suggestions to Dan Cornelius [email protected].

You can download the trail map from the link on theright side of the Kayenta Connection email.
