21 DAY MEDITATION FOR HEALERS

Day 1: The Power and Nobility of Healing

Medicine – and this applies to anyone working in health and healing – is a noble profession. Being noble is to be virtuous, good, honorable, and worthy. In this noble profession, you are serving people, looking after others and helping them. But as we will learn, if you give to others without giving back to yourself, following this noble profession can get hard, tiring and exhausting. You have the opportunity to heal yourself as you heal others. This will be our journey… helping the helpers, supporting the supporters, and healing the healers.

Today’s Affirmation

I am caring for myself and caring for others with ease.

Daily Quote

Day 1: The Power and Nobility of Healing

“When a work lifts your spirits and inspires bold and noble thoughts in you, do not look for any other standard to judge by: the work is good, the product of a master craftsman.” ~ Jean de la Bruyere

Reflection Questions

Why do you do the work you do?

Page 2: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 2: The Power of Your Life's Purpose

What is your life’s purpose? To heal people? To help people? To bring calm and peace to chaotic situations? This is your chance to check in with what is in your heart. Take a moment to connect with what originally brought you here. If your heart is not in your profession and calling, it can be hard to keep going, difficult to remain enthusiastic, and devote your life to this work. Stay in your heart and listen to your calling. Confirm what you know. Discover what you don’t know. Be who you were put on this earth to be.

Today’s Affirmation

I am breathing into my heart and listening to my deeper calling.

Daily Quote

“The Purpose of our lives is to be happy.” ~ The Dalai Lama

Reflection Questions

What is your life’s purpose? How does this show up in your work?

Page 3: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 3: The Power of Learning

As we continue on our journey, you will be finding out things you didn’t know and reminded of things you did know. This is not about what’s lacking and what’s not enough but about learning – learning as a gift and opportunity. Learning can also awaken new possibilities, more growth, and a life that is aligned with our calling and life’s purpose. Learning can help us find out more about ourselves and how we can help patients and people we work with, including ourselves.

Today’s Affirmation

I am learning to discover, grow into, and live my healthiest, happiest life.

Daily Quote

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ~ Dr. Seuss

Reflection Questions

What did you learn today?

What would you like to learn tomorrow?

What would you like to know after five years?

Page 4: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 4: The Experience of School and Higher Education

Often, what we study leads to what we do in our lives. We are told education is important. We are told we need to get good grades. We are told that we need to compete. For some of us, we were hurt by our school or college days, so now is the time to be compassionate with ourselves. We may have regrets - allow them to be healed. We may wish we had made different choices – we can forgive ourselves now. As we begin our journey through our careers, we can accept those days in school and celebrate what they led to and what is still to come.

Today’s Affirmation

Life is a school in which I am learning to master the arts of love and healing.

Daily Quote

“I went to medical school because I wanted to ask the big questions. Do we have a soul? Does God exist? What happens after death?” ~ Deepak Chopra

Reflection Questions

What gave you the most joy at high school or college?

What did you love to learn?

What do you love to learn now?

Page 5: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 5: Your First Job as a Healer

The first time we do anything is always important. This is especially true for work. Our first part-time job or our first day in our careers is a milestone. And with any first, there is fear. Is this going to work? Is this the right career? Is this going to be my life’s work? The truth is we don’t know. We are human. We have doubts. We may have many first days. We may start something, and our heart tells us to change. That’s OK. We are learning all the time. We will always have our first days.

Today’s Affirmation

Today, I choose to remember that each moment is a fresh start and stand renewed.

Daily Quote

“The moment when, after many years of hard work and a long voyage you stand in the centre of your room, house, half-acre, square mile, island, country, knowing at last how you got there, and say, I own this.” ~ Margaret Atwood

Reflection Questions

What was your first day at work like? Whether your job was a part-time job selling ice-cream or the first step in your career, relive the joys and learnings from your first day

Page 6: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 6: Being a Professional

What makes a professional? What makes you a professional? Dedication. Focus. Purpose. A professional dedicates his or her life to their work. They are focused on learning so that they can give back. Their work is their life’s purpose. We are all professionals at work when we think of our patients and go the extra mile. We are professionals when we don’t give up but try one more thing. We are professionals when we take care of ourselves just as much as we take care of our patients and teammates.

Today’s Affirmation

I am devoted to being the best I can be as I care for others and care for myself.

Daily Quote

“Amateurs let adversity defeat them. The pro thinks differently. He shows up, he does his work, he keeps on truckin’, no matter what.” - Steven Pressfield

Reflection Questions

What does being a professional mean to you?

Page 7: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 7: Grounding into the Moment

In working with people in health and healing, we are focused on the body. Oftentimes, the greatest negative influence on the body is mental and emotional stress. In any given moment, you can pivot your focus from worrisome thinking to consciously breathing into your physical body. You can take a vital pause, drawing your awareness inward with the intention of self-care and kindness. When we are standing strong, we are more capable of steadily going forward. When we are grounded, we are balanced and connected to life. When we are sure of where we are, we can work with others and with ourselves.

Today’s Affirmation

I am balanced, grounded and clearly supported by life.

Daily Quote

“The body never lies.” ~ Martha Graham

Reflection Questions

When do you feel grounded?

When do you feel ungrounded?

How can you get from ungrounded to grounded?

Page 8: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 8: Belonging to a Tribe

Today, we are focused on your family, your tribe, your people. As we know, our roots can be vital. Our family is always there. The blood connection is powerful. Our ancestry can be a force which provides a sense of community, a feeling of belonging, and a place in the world. We can take this positive energy and use it to help us on our journey. We can grow from the strong and healthy roots we have inherited.

Today’s Affirmation

I have a healthy sense of belonging and am celebrating my essential place in the world.

Daily Quote

“You only rise as high as the tribe you are in.” ~ Caroline Myss

Reflection Questions

Which tribe do you belong to?

What makes you belong?

Page 9: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 9: Relationships

We all have different relationships. Some are blood relations. Others are friends. Some are romantic. Whatever the relationship looks like, we can reflect on those that we have. As we follow our careers, we can look to our relationships for support and inspiration. We can connect with healthy loved ones. We can create boundaries with unhealthy relationships. Our relationships can make us strong so that we heal and so that we can heal others.

Today’s Affirmation

Each day, it is becoming easier and easier to be more kind, forgiving, and present in all of my relationships.

Daily Quote

“Let choice whisper in your ear and love murmur in your heart. Be ready. Here comes life.” ~ Maya Angelou

Reflection Questions

Who do you consider to be your family?

How do you connect with them?

Page 10: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 10: Creativity

Today, we are looking at creativity. This is where our sense of fun, our love of life, and ability to live life to the fullest resides. The ability to play, to laugh and be full of joy with the simple things in life is part of our nature, part of our childlike core. As we reconnect to ourselves, so we can reconnect to patients and co-workers. As we fill up the empty space inside with good feelings, warm thoughts and joyous creation, so we can heal others and ourselves.

Today’s Affirmation

I am enjoying the little things today with a sense of joy, ease and wonderment.

Daily Quote

“Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties.” ~ Erich Fromm

Reflection Questions

When do you feel the most creative?

What can you do to ignite your creativity?

What gifts are possible with your creativity?

Page 11: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 11: Having a Healthy Relationship with Your Bod

Many of the diseases and conditions that affect us relate to our own personal power. If you are blocked emotionally, then you may be blocked physically. Following our intuition means we listen to something larger than the thinking mind and relax into an inner state of wisdom and deeper knowing. When we honor ourselves, our emotions regulate and relax. When our emotions relax, our bodies are at peace. When our bodies are at peace, our systems work well. When our systems work well and we feel calm and cared for within, it is easy to care for others.

Today’s Affirmation

I love, listen to, and cherish my body by being inwardly kind and breathing deeply.

Daily Quote

"Marvelous is the power, which can be exercised, almost unconsciously, over a company, or an individual, or even upon a crowd by one person gifted with good temper, good digestion, good intellects, and good looks." ~ Anthony Trollope

Reflection Questions

How do you feel?

How does your external health mirror your internal health?

Page 12: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 12: Personal Power

Power, when used responsibly, can enable us to achieve our goals, make miracles happen, and live our life’s purpose. When we misuse, over-use, or abuse our power, we are not following our life’s purpose. When following our intuition, our heart, and destiny, we don’t need to use our power in ways that are not for our good. The key is balance. When we use our power in a consistent way, based on how our intuition is guiding us, then we can be in the zone. We can use our personal strength for the good of all. Today’s journey is about accepting ourselves and our personal power.

Today’s Affirmation

I am speaking, thinking, and acting in congruence with my core values and personal integrity.

Daily Quote

“Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you.” ~ Unknown

Reflection Questions

What are you proud of?

What achievements have you made in your career?

Where could you have compassion about goals that didn’t go the way you have planned?

Page 13: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 13: The Power of the Heart

We measure how healthy we are by how healthy our hearts are. Our hearts pump blood through our bodies. We breathe in and breathe out in the miracle of life. Your heart is your body’s healing center. It integrates and unifies the physical functions with the emotional center. The heart is the center for love. Love is recognized as being the ultimate healing force. When we open our hearts to love, we open ourselves up to peace and joy. With peace and joy, we can live longer, better and more fulfilled lives.

Today’s Affirmation

My heart is strong; my heart is clear; my heart is powerful.

Daily Quote

“Always listen to your heart, because even though it’s on your left it’s always right.” ~ Unknown

Reflection Questions

When does your heart feel good?

When does your heart feel sad?

Page 14: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Reflection Questions

When does your heart feel sad?

Page 15: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 14: The Power of Our Emotions

Often, it can be hard to find compassion for ourselves. As professionals helping others, we may be tough on ourselves when we feel tired, frustrated when we don’t learn, or just plain angry when we make a mistake. Yet if we can love ourselves, forgive ourselves, and be open to challenges as learning opportunities, we can expand, grow and transform. Loving others and, even more importantly, loving ourselves has the power to change our world – for the better.

Today’s Affirmation

I am easily and compassionately seeing the innocence within myself and others today.

Daily Quote

“The heart has its reasons which reason knows not.” ~ Blaise Pascal

Reflection Questions

If my “heart was healed,” what would be possible?

What would it take for me to heal my heart?

Page 16: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 15: The Power of Your Voice

The wellbeing of our throats and voice strongly determine how we communicate and express ourselves. We know we are in the right place when we communicate our feelings easily and without fear. We know we are following our purposes when we can express our creativity. We know everything is in the flow when we can share our learning and wisdom. How fully do you hear others? What is the quality of your listening? When we listen deeply to another person, we understand ourselves more deeply and they get to feel heard. When we listen and communicate from our hearts, we show we care.

Today’s Affirmation

I am listening deeply and speaking clearly today with ease and care.

Daily Quote

“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.” ~ Malala Yousafzai

Reflection Questions

What do you want to say?

What stops you?

Page 17: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 16: The Power of Knowing Who You Are

Now is the time to accept your originality, your uniqueness, and your ability to be yourself. This may take some courage. Many of us have beliefs from our culture, family, or life experience that limit our ability to be true to our hearts. We may question, doubt or deny what is possible. Especially when we rely on our research, data and our minds, we may push aside our heart-felt feelings. But in those quiet moments when we connect with something bigger, we may find the strength to honor our voice. Being ourselves and sharing that can be one of the biggest gifts we can give our patients, our co-workers and ourselves.

Today’s Affirmation

My authentic voice is valuable. I am clearly and lovingly expressing my truth with ease.

Daily Quote

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Reflection Questions

If someone asked you, “who are you?” what would you say?

Page 18: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 17: The Spiritual Journey

Intuition is a connection between our earthly world and the mysterious world, which Einstein alluded to in today’s quote. Intuition enables us to see deeper truths than our regular vision allows. We can use our intuition to connect the realities of our outer world with the knowing of our inner world. The bigger picture is that we are all on a spiritual journey which we have the gift of experiencing and embracing.

Today’s Affirmation

I pause and enjoy the beautiful mystery of Life.

Daily Quote

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.” ~ Albert Einstein

Reflection Questions

When I look up from my work, what do I see?

Page 19: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 18: Truth

The truth of who you are goes beyond the normal confines of thinking and into a bigger perspective. This is about going deeper than the ego’s response: “I'm a nurse practitioner with 20 years of experience; I’m a neurologist; I’m the chief of staff’s executive assistant.” This is the truth of who we are: I am healing. I am joy. I am love. Our truth cannot be limited, negated or denied by others – unless we allow it. We have the ability to be open to what is possible. Be at peace. Be inspired. And be an inspiration.

Today’s Affirmation

The truth of who I am is pure, effortless love, joy and healing.

Daily Quote

“Biology gives you a brain. Life turns it into a mind.” ~ Jeffrey Eugenides

Reflection Questions

What is the truth of who you are as a member of the healing profession?

Page 20: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 19: Your Life's Energy

We are connected to and gain energy from the whole universe. We also share energy with everyone on the planet. Energy keeps us going, energy keeps us alive, energy is how it all works. We can store the energy from our life’s experiences, learning from them as we go, but still living in the present. We can let go of our attachments to past issues and successes by being unattached and in the moment. We can be in the wisdom of our world and the infinite. This is about following the flow, being in the energy of now, and experiencing life.

Today’s Affirmation

I am energized and experiencing life with gratitude and whole-heartedness.

Daily Quote

“It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts.” ~ K.T. Jong

Reflection Questions

What do you gain energy from?

How does that help you be who you are?

Page 21: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 20: Being Connected

When we realize that we are all connected, we can experience calm, peace and joy. We are all connected by a common purpose. At the heart of every religion and spiritual belief, underneath the rituals, tradition and dogma, is love. Love is what links us. We want to help people because of that underlying love. It ties us together and brings us amazing power. Being connected means that we can go beyond what we think is possible as individuals.

Today’s Affirmation

I am connected to a universal power of love, calm and peace.

Daily Quote

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will find them gradually, without noticing it, and live along some distant day into the answer.” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Reflection Questions

How can you use the power of connection in your work life?

How can you ask for help?

Page 22: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 21: Birth and Death

Both birth and death are expected but typically birth is full of joy and death is full of grief. From a place of higher altitude, we can see that the releasing of the old opens a space where something new can emerge. As they say, “When one door closes, another opens.” There is great power in opening to the gap and allowing fresh possibilities to spring forward on their own accord, in perfect timing. This is your day to honor the past challenges and all, appreciate what’s present, and open up to what’s possible.

Today’s Affirmation

I am connected to a powerful sense of inner peace that is beyond life and death.

Daily Quote

“Let life be as beautiful as summer flowers and death as beautiful as autumn leaves.” ~ Rabindranath Tagore

Reflection Questions

What was your highest possibility at birth?

How do you want to be remembered at your death?

Page 23: 21 Day Meditation for Healers

Day 22: Thank You!

Congratulations on completing your 21 Day Meditation Program, “Caring for Others; Caring for Yourself.” I am David Couper, the co-creator of this program, and I would like to personally thank you for coming on this healing journey with us.

Dr Carla Rotering and I created this program to give healthcare workers a space to breathe, to reflect and to reaffirm the reason why you chose this noble profession. We acknowledge you and the gifts that you so generously give each day.

Personally, I know the challenge that comes with life and its inevitable changes, ups and downs, and daily stressors. As one who has been faced with the sudden death of a loved one at too young an age, I have experienced pain and feel great compassion for the challenges that come with being human, which is part of what inspired me to create this program for you.

Just as the buds of spring lead to the blossoms of summer, the falling leaves and then the dead wood, so, too, do our lives.

Celebrate what’s past, celebrate what’s present, and celebrate what’s possible but especially celebrate who you are, what you do and your divine mission to heal.
