About the ArtistNell Painter (the painter formerly known as the historian Nell Irvin Painter, author of The History of White People, Sojourner Truth, A Life, A Symbol, andCreating Black Americans and the Edwards Professor of American History,Emerita, Princeton University) lives and works in Newark, New Jersey.

Artist’s StatementMy work carries discursive as well as visual meaning, and I make it in my characteristic manual+ digital process. My art conveys visual sense but visual sense not only. Using found images anddigital manipulation, I reconfigure the past and revision myself through self-portraits. My work, therefore, carries meaning that isn't stable, for the viewer makes meaning as well as the artist. After a life of historical truth and political engagement with American society, my artwork repre-sents freedom.

Sixty-two years ago, a clubowner/piano player named GeorgeWein launched what would become

the quintessential annual summer musicexperience, the Newport Jazz Festival. This year will be George’s last as artisticdirector, as he announced in March that he is turning the reins over to another musician, bassist/composer/edu-cator/Jazz Night in America host, ChristianMcBride.

“I am deeply humbled by my appoint-ment as artistic director of the NewportJazz Festival—the most storied and leg-endary jazz festival in history. To be able towork with a legend like George Wein, notonly as a musician, but now as an under-study, is a task I will cherish and approachwith openness and excitement. I’m alsolooking forward to working with consum-mate producers Danny Melnick and JaySweet as well as with the entire festivalteam,” said McBride.

“I am very pleased that ChristianMcBride is available to join forces withthe Festival and Foundation,” said GeorgeWein, “I’m looking forward to workingwith him as the beacon of the future ofNewport Jazz Festivals and continuing to

collaborate with Danny to produce someof the world’s finest music events. When Ifirst met and heard a teenage ChristianMcBride in 1989, I knew that he wassomeone special. Little did I know thatnearly 30 years later, he would become thespecial someone to continue my legacy. The Foundation’s Board and I feel that thefestival is in good hands and these twomusic mavericks are more than capable tosustain the festival for decades to come.”

This year’s festival includes incredibletalent, including: Chick Corea withChristian McBride and Brian Blade,Gregory Porter, Kamasi Washington,Norah Jones, Charles Lloyd, Lizz Wright,John Scofield and so many more.
