NEWPORT JAZZ FESTIVAL ’15

continued from page 6

“He’s seen so much jazz, he knowswhat’s coming,” says Alex Ariff, a produc-er for WBGO’s Jazz Night In America.“He wants to invite younger fans into jazz,so it survives.”

Ariff and a crew from NPRMusic fol-lowed Wein around all three days of thefestival, capturing his interactions withmusicians and fans for inclusion in JazzJazz Night In America that will air inOctober to commemorate George’sninetieth birthday.

“You can’t go four feet without someonestopping to thank him,” says Ariff.

Many artists commented on how Weinhas played a decisive role in their careers, and in the vitality of jazz as an art form.

“George had the vision to bring jazz outof the clubs and present it to a broader, much larger audience,” said drummerand bandleader Herlin Riley. “And his

Hiromi and George Wein

vision is still going on today - that makesplaying at Newport very special.”

Wein’s big-tent approach is one JazzNight In America, now on more than ahundred and fifty NPR stations nation-wide, finds inspiring.

“He’s touched everybody, and welcomedeverybody in,” says Katie Simon, JNIA’sexecutive producer. “He follows artists asthey develop, and we’d like to do thesame.” This year’s fest also celebrated thesixtieth anniversary of trumpeter MilesDavis’s first performance in Newport, with a new CD box set and panel discus-sions hosted by author Ashley Kahn.

“Newport was the fuse that lit the explo-sion to Miles’s career,” Kahn told SimonRentner, in an interview for WBGO’s TheCheckout. “This is what really catapultedhim into mainstream America.”

The nonprofit, outdoor festival is heldevery year at Fort Adams State Park, andattracts thousands of fans, rain or shine.

WBGO has partnered with the festivalto bring weekend guests and day travelersdirectly to the festival’s gates, so they canspend more time enjoying the music.
