1 Summertime! What a wonderful time of the year – the BSI canals and Alligator Creek are generally navigable with high water levels, the days are long, and the Gulf temperatures are delightfully warm. Hurricane season is upon us and from all indications it will be a very active one. As I sit here writing, “Dennis” is passing off- shore and I listen to the rain and the wind and feel that we have dodged this one. For those out of town, it’s wise to make plans to have your boat secured by someone local - remem- bering that you are the person responsible for the safety of your boat and the safety of the other boats around you should yours decide to go on an “unmanned” journey. The “buddy system” does work, but don’t forget to make sure contact numbers are provided. The Blessing of the Fleet, the Nav-a-gator luncheon, Sanibel Harbor Resort, and the 4 th of July party are all behind us and we are all looking forward to the Palm Island 3-day trip and the Matlacha dinner cruise. Many indi- viduals also have their own trips to Naples, Marco Island, and the Keys planned. I hope the season allows us to enjoy this boating paradise. Summertime! What a wonderful time of the year – the BSI canals and Alligator Creek are generally navigable with high water levels, the days are long, and the Gulf temperatures are delightfully warm. Hurricane season is upon us and from all indications it will be a very active one. As I sit here writing, “Dennis” is passing off-shore and I listen to the rain and the wind and feel that we have dodged this one. Wow………..time has flown; the first half of the year has come and gone and summer is now in full swing. From an education stand-point, the Club had a full slate of boating re-lated courses, all of which were well attended. Kudos in this regard go to Bill VanOyen for his excellent presentations on Charlotte Harbor Boating, Small Boat Cruising and Introduction to GPS. Mary Will gets a bow for doing a great job presenting and sharing her wealth of knowledge with the First Mates’ class. Finally, my lovely wife, Eileen, is recognized and thanked for putting together and teaching the Red Cross sanctioned CPR course which was given to twelve members on July 9th. Plans to hold additional courses are under dis-cussion; however, they will probably be held in the fall when many of our members return from their summer journeys. On the safety front there are several items that I would like to discuss. We all know that boat-ing can be and is a lot of fun. There are dan-gers however that can come into play; many of which are sadly caused by pure and simple carelessness. A recent example of this is an event which occurred while I was vacationing this spring in Cape May. What transpired was a young boy scout drowned when he fell over-board from a local sightseeing boat. The trag-edy here was that the boy fell as the result of horsing around with his friends after having been told to stop. Unfortunately, he didn’t lis-ten and ended up paying the ultimate price. Several, less severe, but nonetheless potentially very dangerous situations that I recently wit-nessed had to do with deck safety (or lack

thereof). While on several boating excursions I experienced two separate incidents where peo-ple slipped and fell while standing on the bow of their boats. In both instances, the victims (who will remain anonymous) were not wear-ing deck shoes. The message is …………….wet decks are particularly hazard-ous especially if you are in bare feet. Please; be careful, especially when you go out on the bow of your boat and make sure that you wear pro-tective foot gear which is designed to handle a slippery deck. Enjoy the summer and please remember to be careful no matter what the occasion. Jack Leming, Vice Commodore

The 2005 Inshore Tour-nament was held in late April and the winning team was Skipper Dick Sellers and his crew, Rex Anderson and Bill O’Dell. The trophy was presented by our 2005 Inshore Tournament win-ner, Skipper Max Reese. During this quarter we had the following presen-tations from a guest

speaker and members: · Fred Bader held a forum on knife sharpen-

ing. · Dick Sellers discussed rigging soft baits for

inshore fishing for trout, redfish and snook. · Our June guest speaker was Betty Staugler

from Sea Grant Florida. Betty is Charlotte County’s Sea Grant Agent and her presen-tation covered artificial reefs, the impact on the Florida environment when exotic im-ported flora and fauna are turned loose in Florida, the impact they have on the native plants and animals and the importance of sea grass habitat.

Web Site Over the past 4 months a substantial amount of in-formation has been loaded onto the Fishing Club website. Each month we update What’s Biting cov-ering both inshore and offshore species. The site covers a wide range of subjects including fishing, boat maintenance, safety & health and website list-ings covering a full range of fishing topics. You can log onto the Fishing Club website through the BSIBC website and click on the Fishing Club icon. Members’ ideas, topics, suggestions and comments along with “Catch of the Day” photographs are welcome. BSI Fishing Club Future It has been 6 years since the BSI Fishing Club was organized as an arm of the BSIBC. During this period the Fishing Club has been under the same leadership. It is time for a change and at our

November 2005 meeting, I will be stepping down from the leadership role. For the past several months I have tried to solicit a candidate to take over the 2006 leadership role of the Fishing Club. To date, I have received 5 emails and 2 verbal comments from the membership re-garding the future of the Club. We have a member new to the area and fishing the region who is will-ing to assist and help whoever steps forward to as-sume the 2006 leadership role. Should the Fishing Club fold at years end due to lack of interest, then please provide response to the following questions. 1. Does the membership want to hold the 2005 offshore tournament scheduled for mid October?

2. In the event the Club folds, do you as indi-viduals, through the BSIBC, wish to con-tinue to participate in the area’s Gold Cup Tournament?

3. After the first year is up for the Club’s 2005 Inshore and Offshore winners, the stained glass trophies are to be returned and they will donated to the CCA Florida Charlotte Chapter 2006 banquet. Do you agree with this concept?

4. Is there any interest in maintaining the Fishing Club website, should the Club fold?

5. Is there any member willing to step forward and assume the leadership role of the Club? If so, please contact me.

6. Should the Club continue operation next year under new leadership, I would be will-ing to coordinate the Gold Cup reporting and maintain the Fishing Club web site.

Please respond to the above questions and the re-quest for leadershiip to me by e-mail or phone. Thank you. Till next tide Len Harris

The BSIBC website has continued to expand with more meaningful in-formation for our members. Our officers and directors recently authorized the purchase of our own domain name to have our own unique identity which is now bsibc.com. In addition, we also now own the domain name of bsiyc.com. Member Nick Hay is directing the change from our previous host, Sunline, to our new host, NetSolutions. This change will be transparent for our membership except that the new URL will be www.bsibc.com Len Harris continues to provide new informa-tion for the Fishing Club pages. Check out the fishing pages for the latest information. Paul Bankson continues to do a fine job taking event photos and capturing every smiling face. What’s New? • Pdf membership application link on home-

page. • The latest 2005 event photos • New Ship’s Store page • Cruising Information • Lightning protection • Bahamas Information • Anchoring & Ground Tackle • Southwest Florida Anchorages • Items for sale page can now display photos • Current Canal & Creek info from the Advi-

sory Committees • Weather page now has link for Red Tide

info…and much more. You will also notice that we placed a hit counter on the home page to track site usage. Our web hits typically average 350 to 400 hits per month. This helps to provide the motiva-tion to continue the work to make our website

better every day. Lastly, my time is coming to an end as web-master. Winston Rigg, our Computer Club President, has volunteered to become the web-master for the future and will be working with me through the end of this year as he takes over. As always, we welcome your ideas and suggestions for improvement. Tom Murphy, Webmaster

I will begin this log-book entry with a sincere apology to John and Judi Jokerst. In my last effort to captain our various luncheon cruises, I inadvertently left out their cruise. To make matters worse, it was one of the few we could attend by boat. John picked a perfect day weather-wise, and all went well. Thank you, John & Judi. To get our spring and summer cruising off to a safe start, Jack Leming arranged the Coast Guard Aux. Safety Inspection. Sixty-eight boats were inspected. Our first Spring cruise was Frank Wiechec’s Vinoy/Mooring’s 6-night cruise beginning April 4th. I was told they experienced strong winds and rough seas. On April 13, we gathered at the Nav-A-Gator. We ate outside under their new umbrella ta-bles. All went by car, because of the wind and rain forecast, but it turned out to be a nice day. Never say die, we scheduled the trip again on May 17, and enjoyed a nice boat cruise this time. It was a beautiful day. We ended the month of April with the Com-modore’s Ball. It was another fine example of planning by Dot Minzer, Judy Johnson and the Social Committee. A large crowd was in atten-dance, and the music and dinner were superb. The Social Committee’s efforts to honor Frank and Alice Wiechec were up to their usual high standards. Lots of laughs and a good time was had by all. We cruised into May with a great 3-nighter at Tween Waters with Ed Minzer as Cruise Di-rector. The Tween Waters cruisers joined Howard Elkin’s Green Flash Luncheon for a nice afternoon. Even the weather man didn’t

argue with Ed and Howard. Frank Wiechec arranged the Blessing of the Fleet on May 15, and the number of boats was a little disappointing. Hopefully, next year, we will see a greater number joining this important and inspiring event. In June, the Sanibel Resort trip, arranged by Joe & Barbara Lakatos, was a “touch of class”. The weather forced us to drive, but it was a wonderful day. Joe vows to try it again, when we can go by boat. Unfortunately, our last two events in June, Pelican Bay 3-nights and the Cabbage Key Cruise, were rained out. I have been asked by Vice Commodore and Safety Officer, Jack Leming, to remind all our members, particularly our newer members, to review the cruising procedures for our Club sponsored cruises. They begin on page 16 of our Boat Club Directory and contain some very important material. I also want to remind Club members to notify the Cruise Director of an event if it is neces-sary to cancel your reservation, whether you are going by boat or car. Do this as soon as possible, so the restaurant can have an accurate final count. My thanks to all the Cruise Directors and their helpmates, who put together these events, and to Paul Bankson, for diligently recording it all with his camera. Thank you, Paul Hillebrand

Slow Speed Minimum Wake It has been brought to my attention again by a number of individuals that the boat speed within our canal system appears to be on the increase. There are a number of reasons to observe the Slow Speed Minimum Wake signs: -Sea wall damage; larger wakes tend to undermine the walls -Injury to individuals working on their boats -Injury to a diver cleaning the bottom of a boat These are only a few of possible results. On many observations a person who is asked to slow down due to his/her wake just doesn’t believe they are doing anything wrong. If you were to go to Chap-man Piloting manual and look for a definition of “No Wake” or “Slow Speed Minimum Wake” you would be hard pressed to find anything definitive. It talks about going slow so as to not disturb other boats. However, in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s The Florida Boater’s Guide: A Hand-book of Boating Laws and Responsibilities these terms are defined. “Slow Speed” is a speed at which a vessel is operating fully off plane and is completely settled in the water; the vessel’s wake must not be excessive nor cre-ate a hazard to other vessels. “No Wake Speed” is the slowest speed at which it is still possible to maintain steerage and headway. The vessel should not produce a wake at this speed.” Some individuals would like to change the signs within our canals to “Idle Speed NO Wake”. Others feel that confronting the persons making a wake and request-ing them to slow down will be enough and if they still persist, call the police. If you observe a boat making a large wake you should record the registration num-ber and boat name. This will be an agenda item at the August 8th Canal Maintenance meeting. If you have an opinion, please come and be heard. Chuck Will BSICMAC Chairman 505-1286 [email protected]

Burnt Store Isles Canal Maintenance Advisory Committee

Meeting: June 13, 2005

The highlights of this meeting were: Dredging, Mangrove Trimming, and Budget. Dredging: The dredging to 5 foot MLW has been completed. Anyone finding a shallow spot should report it to one of the CMAC members. Mangrove Trimming: The city has received a new permit which allows for trimming back to the berm. This will widen the perimeter canal in a number of areas. The trimming will not start until October when the new budget is available. Budget: As you have read in the paper, we will have an increase from $170 to $250 in the canal maintenance assessment in our next tax bill. This is due to the increase in mangrove trimming, the increased coast of material and the fact that our sea walls and caps are ageing, requiring more replacement. The city and your committee have made allowance for these pro-jected increases with this recommendation. Another subject discussed was the speed in the canals. See separate article. The Canal Maintenance Committee meetings are scheduled for the second Monday of each month in City Hall at 1:30. Everyone is welcome to attend. They can be very fast or can have some healthy discussions. Speed will be discussed next month. Chuck Will BSICMAC Chairman 505-1286

This BSIBC event is again geared toward dinghies, jet skis and small utility boats without pot-ties and armed ONLY with water squirt guns. Our “Geneva Convention” outlaws buckets and water filled balloons in addition to any unsportsmanlike item or any environmentally unsafe item. The event is open to all BSIBC members including those who do not wish to participate in the boating activities, but would like to attend the “Tube Steak” (potluck) dinner at the Guttschalks’, 606 Candia Court. Co-cruise directors are Judy Guttschalk and Terry LeSiege. A “POKER RUN” is being planned again for this year. You may participate in the Poker Run either as a boater or non-boater. For the boaters, please remember this is NOT A RACE and our canal system is a “NO WAKE” zone. Your challenge will be to find 5 playing card locations somewhere in our canal system (without a time limit.) Non-boaters will draw for their poker hand cards prior to dinner. The POKER RUN entry fee, which includes your tube steak, is $5.00 per person. A $1.00 donation is requested from those who do not play a poker hand. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish (sized NOT to feed an army) AND YOUR OWN DRINKS. Paper products and plastic eating utensils will be provided. There will be a SKIPPERS’ MEETING on the Guttschalk lanai at 9:30 AM sharp on the morning of the POKER RUN. It is mandatory that all skippers attend this meeting for both safety and poker run instructions including initial designation assignments. The Guttschalk house will be open at 2:00 PM and it is expected that the “tube steaks” will be served around 3:30 PM. The pool will be open for swimming in the afternoon and evening. We do need 5 volunteer locations to dispense playing cards for the Poker Run. Last year’s innovative dock groups had as much fun as the boaters! Please call Judy for details. Deadline: Reservations and cash payment by 5:00 PM Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005. Reservations: Judy Guttschalk 505-0095 or [email protected] or Terry Le-Siege 505-7932. Information: Number of people by car or boat, number that will be playing poker and the dish you will bring is requested when you sign up for the event.

For those of you who have never been there, the way to get to the Island is by boat, either on one of the BSIBC cruise boats or to take the Water Taxi from Leverock’s Restaurant at Palm Island Resort. It is going to take a little bit of planning and I will need your help to make this happen. 1. If you would like to ride up on one of our boats, let me know as soon as possible. Before and at the Skippers’ meeting, I’ll let all Skippers know you are looking for a ride. 2. If you are going to go by car, let me know with whom you are going to be riding. 3. If you are looking for a ride by car, let me know and I’ll try to get you a ride. After the Skippers meeting we will have it all sorted out. I have contacted the Water Taxi Company and if we get about 25 people going by taxi, they will cut the cost from $4.00 to $3.00 per person. Trip back to Leverock’s is free. The water taxi would leave Leverock’s at 11:45 AM to arrive at Noon. If we only have a “few” going by car, one of our cruise boats could stop by Leverock’s and pick you up. Since this is the slow period for Run Bay Restaurant, I have contacted them and they will give is a break on Lunch items if we purchase off the BSIBC “Luncheon Special.” This will also give them a chance to get in enough supplies and staff for the day. If you want to order off of their regular menu, no problem. Since there are very few residents/renters on the “private” island at this time of year, we should be able to take a short walk on the beach before we start back. I will keep you updated. If you have any questions, I welcome your call. John
