We are Nebraska Medicine & UNMC.

Our mission is to lead the world in transforming lives to create a healthy future for

all individuals and communities through premier educational programs, innovative research and

extraordinary patient care.

Global leaders in infectious disease treatment, careUNMC and its primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, are home to one of the nation’s few dedicated biocontainment units and, since the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Africa, have taken a leading role in training health care workers across the U.S. and around the world in dealing with infectious diseases such as Ebola.

Personalized cancer care in one stopThe Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, which opened in 2017, is shaping cancer care, research and education in Nebraska, the region and the world. The center offers personalized care to patients – based on the latest scientific research – in one facility. And, the Chihuly Sanctuary, and a diverse collection of artwork, further enhance the patient experience, acknowledging that the arts are intrinsic to wellness and healing.

Transforming health care educationUNMC soon will open the Dr. Edwin G. & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center, which will house advanced simulation clinical settings and virtual immersive reality technology. The facility and UNMC’s iEXCELSM initiative will transform how health science education and clinical care is delivered through competency-based learning and assessment.

Breakthrough paves way for human cureResearchers at UNMC and Temple University have for the first time eliminated replication-competent HIV-1 DNA – the virus responsible for AIDS – from the genomes of living animals. The study marks a critical step toward the development of a possible cure for human HIV infection.

Wiping out pancreatic cancer through rapid detection, treatmentUNMC is on a mission to wipe out pancreas cancer -- perhaps the most lethal form of cancer -- with a rapid autopsy program that features the most extensive and well documented collection of pancreatic cancer tissue deposits in the world; and an early detection program for people at increased risk of developing pancreas cancer. Already, UNMC receives more than $8.5 million in annual funding from the National Cancer Institute for its pancreatic cancer research, which includes a prestigious Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant, awarded only to the most outstanding research programs.

Flood “clean-up kits” make positive impactFloodwaters ravaged Nebraska and surrounding states during the spring of 2019, prompting extensive cleanup, as well as mental health and educational resources. UNMC answered the call distributing nearly 1,700 “safe flood clean-up kits” that included not only cleaning supplies, but also personal protective equipment. Supplies were donated by MAP International, whose CEO Steve Stirling is a former Omaha resident.

Nod to public-private partnershipsLook in any direction of UNMC’s Omaha campus and you’ll see how public-private partnerships have transformed the campus landscape. During the past 20 years, private philanthropy has helped construct new facilities for nearly every UNMC college. Philanthropic gifts also have renovated numerous other spaces and boosted academic and clinical programs.

MMI ready to soar with new, expanded facilitiesThe sky’s the limit for the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation, which, by summer 2020, will move from its existing location on the UNMC Omaha campus to the former First Data building on Pine Street near the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Scott Campus. The renovated facility will enable MMI to establish new services and expand and enhance existing services to improve the overall quality of care and patient experience for individuals with disabilities and complex health care needs.

State’s only accredited genetic education program UNMC’s new master’s program in genetic counseling is the state’s first and only accredited genetic education program in a profession with a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics-projected 29 percent future growth rate. The two-year master’s degree program is a unique partnership between UNMC’s College of Allied Health Professions and its Munroe-Meyer Institute, which does groundbreaking work in genetics and employs most of the genetic counselors in Nebraska.

Dental services yield bright smiles The 2016 oral health assessment for Nebraska estimates that half of all youths ages 6-15 have experienced dental decay. The UNMC College of Dentistry counters that by offering free services during its annual Children’s Dental Day. Since 2001, the college has treated more than 6,000 children and provided services valued at more than $3 million to low income and underserved children throughout the state. For some, it’s their first visit with the dentist.
