unlocking differences in dairy intake for bone health
DESCRIPTION
This new field of research study seeks to establish new ground with how health is affected by nutrition. Previous studies have determined that dairy products provide various health benefits which have been associated with improving bone health. Further research study in this field also continues to support the notion that chronic conditions and major public health threats like osteoporosis may be prevented with adequate nutrition. Unlocking Differences in Dairy
Intake for Bone Health
Taking differing sources of dairy foods may have different effects on a
person’s bone health, medical experts declare based on new research data
from the Institute for Aging Research. (IFAR) Sources of dairy, especially
milk and yogurt, have been found by researchers to enhance the bone
mineral density of hip bones but vertebral bones in the spine were not
changed. Cream of any type has been found to be associated with lower bone
mineral density all in all. Results from the research analysis suggest that not
all dairy sources are similarly beneficial in assisting bone health.
This study was published in the journal Archives of Osteoporosis by
Hebrew Senior life which is an affiliate of Harvard Medical School and
where IFAR is located.
Bone health requires several essential
nutrients such as those known to be
provided by dairy products, like milk
and yogurt, which have been linked to
improving bone density with as much
as two and one-half to three servings a
day for an extended period of time. It
was also found by researchers that
cream and other dairy foods similar to
it, such as ice cream, provided minimal
amounts of the nutrients because they
were composed more of fat and sugar.
The researchers also agree that further study is
needed with cheese products especially with regards
to how bone health is affected by the high
concentrations of fat and salt in its contents. In
addition, the study did not account for differences in
the influence of individual dairy products in fracture
risk and prevention which also needs further study.
The IFAR researchers determined that nutritional
composition varied among dairy foods and even differed
significantly from one another in terms of content as
well as benefits provided after being compared to health
values such as bone mineral density. Nutritional benefits
for middle-aged men and women may be obtained from
dairy products such as low-fat milk and yogurt. Milk and
yogurt have also been found to increase intake of
protein, calcium, and vitamin D compared to cream
products while limiting intake of saturated fats.
