Welcome from the Chancellor
On behalf of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, welcome to our May 2014 Commencement Ceremony. Commencement is one of our most time-honored and cherished traditions, one we have practiced for 119 years.
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point held its initial commencement ceremony on June 26, 1895. Dr. Benjamin S. Terry of the University of Chicago spoke on the topic, 'What is An Education?' and seven elementary education graduates received diplomas.
Today we will honor more than 1,400 students, their families and supporters as they celebrate this major achievement. They will hold degrees from a university that now boasts four academic colleges Bernie L. Patterson and more than 100 program choices within 58 majors, 79 minors and 13 graduate programs. We congratulate our students, and all who have made it possible, for their achievements, learning and rigorous work.
Completing a university degree is a major accomplishment, one achieved with significant sacrifices by the students themselves and also by their families, associates and friends. It is my honor to present these students to you so you may share in the great joy of their success on this special day.
I thank our faculty and staff members today as well. Through their dedication and mentorship, they have broadened our students' intellectual horizons, contributed to many happy memories, and most importantly, they have transformed lives.
It is my pleasure to confer these degrees and to honor our Spring 2014 graduates through this most magnificent of UW-Stevens Point traditions.
Sincerely,
~-;;J~ Bernie L. Patterson Chancellor

The Speaker
Peter McPartland has been the chairman of the board at Sentry Insurance since 2013. He joined the company in 2010 as president and chief operating officer and became chief executive officer in 2012.
Sentry Insurance is one of the largest insurance companies in the U.S. with assets of more than $13 billion and equity surplus of more than $4 billion. Sentry employs more than 4,000 people in the U.S., with more than 2,200 located here in the Stevens Point area. In addition, there are more than 700 Sentry retiree families living locally.
Sentry and the associates who work at Sentry are known Peter McPartland for their generous contributions to the community and the public in numerous ways, including the largest contributor to the United Way, as well as strongly supporting the arts. Through the Sentry Foundation, scholarships are provided to each university in the UW System, which includes 36 per year at UW-Stevens Point. Sentry has hired 110 UW-Stevens Point graduates during the last three years. Perhaps best known locally for the technology initiative, Sentry contributes more than $1 million a year for computers and supporting technology for Stevens Point schools, both public and parochial.
Pete has served more than 30 years in the insurance industry. Prior to Sentry Insurance, he was the CEO of Golden Eagle Insurance Company in San Diego, Calif., and previously with General Casualty in Madison for 15 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Florida.
In 2010, Pete and Laura, his wife, moved to Stevens Point, where he currently serves on the Board of Sentry Insurance, as well as the Workers Compensation Research Institute and the Board of Governors for Property Casualty Insurers Association of America.

The Albertson Medallion was established in 1967 as a memorial to James H. Albertson, eighth president of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. These students have distinguished themselves as true leaders within the academic and co-curricular activities of our university and community. In awarding the medallions, the students, faculty and staff members of UW-Stevens Point express their great pride in the accomplishments of the graduates during their college experience. The Albertson Medallion further suggests an anticipation of the significant achievement which we believe lies ahead for these recipients.

Army. Students enroll in ROTC's elective leadership and military courses in addition to their required courses. The program teaches leadership skills to be successful in a college,

Honor Designations
Undergraduate Honors
The faculty has established a program of academic honors to recognize undergraduate students for outstanding academic achievement.
There are three levels of undergraduate academic honors, which are awarded on the
basis of grade point average for all courses attempted. Those students graduating Cum Laude have achieved an overall grade point average of 3.5 to 3.74; those graduating Magna Cum Laude have earned an overall grade point average of 3.75 to 3.89; and those
achieving an overall grade point average of 3.9 or above have earned the Summa Cum Laude designation.
Phi Kappa Phi
Phi Kappa Phi is a national honor society that encourages superior scholarship in all academic disciplines and recognizes those persons of good character who have excelled in scholarship. The names of those students who have earned this distinction are noted in the commencement program.

Academic Regalia History
The origins of the academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries when universities were beginning to form. It is still open to question as to whether academic
dress finds it sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or civilian dress. It is often suggested that gowns and hoods were the simplest, most effective method of staying warm in the unheated, stone buildings that housed medieval scholars.
In the days of King Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing a definite academic dress and made it a matter of university control to the extent of its minor details. The assignment of colors to signify certain faculties was to be a much later development and one which was to be standardized only in the United States in the late 19th century. An Intercollegiate Commission comprised of representatives of leading institutions met at Columbia University in 1895 and adopted a code of academic dress, which besides regulating the cut and style and materials of the gowns, prescribed the colors which were to represent the different fields of learning.
In 1959, a Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies, appointed by the American Council on Education, again reviewed the costume code and made several changes. In 1986, the committee updated the code and added a sentence clarifying the use of the color dark blue for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Academic Regalia The Gown
Pattern. Gowns recommended for use in the colleges and universities of the United States have the following characteristics. The gown for the baccalaureate degree has pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The gown for the master's degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. The gown for the doctor's degree has bell-shaped sleeves.
Material. As a means of adaptation to climate, the material of the gowns may vary from very light to very heavy provided the material, color and pattern follow the prescribed rules.
Color. Black is most common although some universities have adopted a different color.
Trimmings. Gowns for the baccalaureate or master's degrees are untrimmed. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with black velvet, and three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. These facings and crossbars may be of velvet of the color distinctive of the disciplines to which the degree pertains, thus agreeing in color with the binding or edging of the hood appropriate to the particular doctoral degree in every instance.
The Hood
Linings. The hoods are to be lined with the official color or colors of the institution which granted the highest degree held by the wearer; more than one color is shown by division of the field color in a variety of ways such as by chevron or chevrons.
Trimmings. The binding or edging of the hood is to be velvet or velveteen, two inches, three inches and five inches wide for the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees, respectively; the color should be indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains.

Academic Regalia Chancellor's Medallion and the Ceremonial Mace
The Chancellor's Medallion and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Ceremonial Mace were both handcrafted by Henry M. Runke, former chairman of the UW-Stevens Point Art Department. The medallion was cast in a 14k gold pendant in 1968 and contains a purple amethyst to represent the school colors. The four-sectioned areas beginning near the center symbolize the four colleges of the university and terminate as prongs for the gem. The mace, carried by the grand marshal in academic processions, was completed in 1976 and has a square base on which important dates from the school's history are recorded. The most prominent feature is the head of the mace which is a miniature of the cupola on Old Main, the university's symbol. The inside of the mace also contains a purple amethyst.
International Flags As a depiction of the university's commitment to fostering global citizenship, the international flags represent the home countries of our international students since 1980, and also the countries in which our students have studied through international programs. The current total of 119 nations includes the following:
Angola Czech Republic Italy Peru Anguilla Denmark Japan Philippines Argentina Dominican Republic Jordan Poland Australia Ecuador Kazakhstan Portugal Austria Egypt Kenya Puerto Rico Azerbaijan El Salvador North Korea Russia Bahamas Estonia South Korea Saudi Arabia Bahrain Ethiopia Kuwait Senegal Bangladesh Fed States of Laos Serbia Belarus Micronesia Latvia Singapore Belgium Finland Libya Slovakia Belize France Luxembourg South Africa Bermuda TheGambia Malawi Spain Bosnia-Herzegovina Georgia Malaysia Sri Lanka Botswana Germany Mali St. Lucia Brazil Ghana Mauritania Sweden Brunei Great Britain Mexico Switzerland Bulgaria Greece Mongolian Peoples Syria Burma Greenland Republic Taiwan Burundi Guatemala Morocco Tanzania Cameroon Guinea Myanmar Thailand Canada Haiti Namibia Trinidad and Tobago Chile Hong Kong Nepal Tunisia China Hungary Netherlands Turkey Colombia Iceland New Zealand Uganda Congo Democratic India Nicaragua Ukraine Republic Indonesia Nigeria Venezuela

Cupola Replica Commissioned by Chancellor Bernie L. Patterson, 2012 Cupola by Joseph Hoover, artisan Weathervane by Boleslaw Kochanowski and sons, artisans Bill McKee, consultant
The cupola replica was created from materials significant to the university and surrounding communities: white ash and elm from campus; white pine from Marathon Park; lead curtain weights from the Jenkins Theatre, Noel Fine Arts Center; slate from a chalkboard in the Communication Arts Center; and hemlock from the former Lullabye Furniture factory.
The original weathervane stood atop Old Main for 118 years and was replaced in 2011. The replica iron weathervane is a one-fifth scale model of the original.
It is a tradition for first-year students to seal their covenant with the university by touching the cupola replica as they depart from Convocation. Faculty and staff renew their commitment in a similar fashion. A bookend tradition is observed at Commencement, as students become alumni, receive their pin bearing the iconic symbol, and pledge to use their knowledge to engage responsibly with a diverse and sustainable world.
On special nights the cupola atop Old Main shines purple and gold in honor of all those the university has served and our bright future ahead. Tonight the cupola is lit in honor of the graduates.

Alumni Association
Welcome Spring 2014 graduates to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Alumni Association.
The Alumni Association, part of the OW-Stevens Point Advancement unit that includes the OWSP Foundation as well as the development team, works to strengthen relationships with more than 77,000 Pointer alumni. Today, you become one of the university's most important ambassadors and are a major force in shaping the reputation of OW-Stevens Point.
The association helps alumni stay in touch with former classmates and friends through a variety of services including alumni reunions, homecoming, alumni travel, an online alumni community, directory, as well as through various communications and other special events. To learn more about the Alumni Association and its Board of Directors, contact the Alumni Affairs Office at 715-346-3811, [email protected], or visit www.uwsp.edu/ alumni.
We are delighted to recognize a special group of alumni joining us for the spring 2014 morning Commencement exercises. Members of our Golden Iris Reunion, alumni who became part of the Pointer family fifty or more years ago, join us to celebrate what graduation is like today and to reminisce about the tradition in which they took part five or more decades ago. These Pointers laid the foundation for today's students. If you see Pointers wearing golden robes today, please say hello and get to know them. You are all part of a very special family- the OW-Stevens Point Alumni Association.
Congratulations to the Class of 2014!
