PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Unfortunately, the 1998/99 season fell short of expectations on the playing
fields. 1st Grades 46 points and 11th position on the table was probably the
highlight along with the Green Shield side’s comprehensive victories
inspired by exceptional cricket from players like Daniel Christian and
Andrew Langdon (real players of the future) and 4th grade making the
newly formatted 6 team finals series. However, the other results were
disappointing and were well short of the goals set for the Club this year.
By the same token these results must be viewed in their true context,
namely, that of a Club in its early stages of a rebuilding program, both on
and off the field. The number of new and very young players making up
our 1st and 2nd Grade sides this year is an important development for the Club that promises a bright
future and hopefully a long awaited 3rd premiership in 1st Grade in the next few years. With the
assistance, guidance and development being provided by what must be the top Club Coaching Team in
Australia (Messrs Lawson, Milliken and Salisbury) the encouraging first year performances of our
young guns (let’s ignore PG performances for the time being) seem certain to be converted into further
representative honours within the Club and that long awaited return to the pinnacle of the Sydney
Grade competition.
Jon Horley’s first season as 1st Grade captain is one about which he can be very proud. With the loss
of a couple of key 1st Graders from last year, the “barnstorming” 11th position finish (with
comprehensive wins over North Sydney (minor premiers), Easts, Gordon and Petersham and a narrow
miss against St George) displayed what a galvanised and competitive team he had moulded together.
The poor first half of the season for 1st Grade might have killed other teams.
Congratulations also to Rob Stark in (again) leading his side into the semi finals.
Ian Salisbury’s return for a second season and the potential that he might be a regular fixture at the
Club for more seasons to come is an enormous bonus. His Cricketer of The Year achievement for the
Club was testament to his wonderful on field performances. Ian has become an invaluable part of the
Club with his coaching contributions and his abilities to develop the all round cricketing skills of
players right throughout the Club.
Geoff Milliken’s retirement from 1st Grade sees the end of a magnificent career at that level.
Thankfully it seems that Geoff will continue in his coaching role and captain the all important 2nd
Grade side that is in desperate need of a player of his experience and ability to develop the young and
aspiring cricketers as they rise through the grades, and on route to 1st Grade.
Finally, congratulations to the well deserved Life Membership finally bestowed on Dave Meagher.
What a wonderful servant of the Club he has been in years gone by in his captaincy, batting and
fielding, but equally in his contributions as President of the Club and in his roles on the Management
Committee of the Sydney Cricket Association. And to Matt Sanders, a most worthy recipient of the
Clubman of the year award.

The UNSWCC offers its members so much in the way of opportunities and assistance, as cricketers
and as people. I sincerely believe that the taste of another 1st Grade premiership or Club Championship
is something that is not too far around the corner provided the players continue with their hard efforts
and utilise the resources (and skills) that are available to them. CHRIS CHAPMAN

COACHING REPORT
After a year at DP Greg Livingstone decided to hand down that trusty baseball glove to myself to take
on the Club Coaching role. Once again we were back at the VG for competition games and Club
training which made life a lot easier for players and coaching staff alike.
Generally, everybody was keen about the upcoming season after a good finish to 1997/98. Squad
training started at the SCG Indoor Nets and fitness runs all commenced in July. Unfortunately wet
weather seemed to plague us for the first half of the season interrupting our pre season game against
Sydney Uni and numerous training sessions, which was frustrating for everybody involved.
Overall I was happy with the efforts of the players at training but late in the season numbers did drop
off and people were turning up later than normal. With a middle of the road finish in the Club
Championship we still need to be working harder and improving ourselves to lift our standing in all
grades and win premierships.
I would like to thank several people who helped throughout the season. Geoff Lawson who was at most
sessions helping out and talking to players. Jim Dixon also helped out at training and not to mention
numerous phone calls and e:mails to players. Ian Salisbury was always lending a hand with batsmen
and bowlers and with fielding drills. Thanks to Roger Carr and Ray Galway for their efforts and
support with practice and match day wickets. With a newly laid centre and practice wickets and some
unkind weather made Roger’s task a hard one at the VG.
In closing I would like to thank all Club members for their support and hope we are all working hard
for a successful season ahead.

FIRST GRADE REPORT
To reflect upon a season that saw us finish on 46 points and in outright 11th spot, it is fair to say that
in many ways it was a pleasing and satisfying one. However when you analyse the season and consider
that we were on 20 points and in contention for the wooden spoon with only four rounds remaining it
puts the season in a different perspective.
To finish the final four rounds in the way that we did was to say the very least an extraordinary
experience. Two outright victories, one first innings victory against the minor premiers - that was one
wicket away from an outright, and what was effectively an outright tie that could have gone either way
against a top four side.
Being a part of what was an exceptional team effort and what was the epitome of team spirit and
camaraderie was a highlight in my cricketing life. For us to reap the rewards of the countless hours
associated with participating in this sport that we all have a deep and intense passion for was an
exhilarating experience. If you ever doubted why you sacrifice so much time to participate in the sport
the answer was in the final four rounds. Guys realising the potential that they have, others performing
above their own expectations and contributing to what was simply an outstanding team effort. It made
me an extremely proud and satisfied skipper. Whilst reflecting upon the season one feels for Pratty who
due to injury missed the last four games and consequently was the brunt of numerous form reversal
jokes. He deserved to share in our success and it was great to see him turning up to support and also
participate in the final round for the Club.
The exciting part for the UNSWCC is that the current first grade side is brimming with youth, raw
talent, enthusiasm and motivation. If the guys can capture the emotion from the final four rounds, work
even harder this pre-season on some techniques and take that with them into the next season, the Club
will be in a first grade final next year!
Moving away from the emotional high of the final four rounds the reason that we didn’t finish higher
than 11th spot was due to our batting. A lack of consistency, a lack of significant partnerships and a
lack of centuries cost us dearly. To win a premiership I estimate one player must get 600-700 runs plus
and two others must get around 500. Dave Carson was the only player to break 500.
Knowing that if we could get our way to 250 we would just about guarantee ourselves a victory or at
the very least a fighting chance, but being unable to do that was a great disappointment. And that fact
alone should provide us with the ammunition we need to make ourselves work that little bit harder in
the nets and turn ourselves into a side capable of winning the premiership.

Individual Players:
Geoff Milliken:
If Spike does retire from first grade as he has indicated, it would sell short his role in the side to say he
will be an enormous loss for the first grade but also for our Club. The respect that the Cricket
community has for Spike is immense and he will be enormously missed not only by the UNSWCC but
also by all those that have played with, played against, umpired or just come in contact with . Spike’s
obvious experience came in extremely handy on numerous occasions rarely was the advice he offered
me ignored and even more rarely was it wrong.
Overall it was a disappointing season for Spike with the bat. His standout performance was the
sensational dig of 85 not out against his old side St George. The great shame of the season was that we
couldn’t provide the necessary support to allow him to go on and get a much deserved century.
Spike’s close to the wicket catching was once again outstanding. Numerous half chances were taken
and one particular gem against Gordon was the turning point in allowing us to grab outright points.
Farewell to one of the genuine GOOD GUYS!!
Ian Salisbury:
“Salsy” was simply too good for players on any number of occasions. His numbers say it all. 45
wickets at 17.6 in the declaration cricket and 9 wickets at 7 in the one dayer’s. Salsy was just about
unplayable when he got it right and he was most certainly unpickable all season.
The real beauty about captaining a guy like “Sals” is that he rarely doesn’t get it right. In fact I can’t
recall him bowling badly. He may not always have bowled brilliantly but he never gave away easy runs
and always made the batsmen earn their runs.
Undoubtedly a slightly disappointing year with the bat for Sals by his own very high standards, after
the season he had last year perhaps we expected too much.
A very deserving winner of the Club Player of the Year, and we seriously hope the English selectors
continue to overlook a player that could very well win back the Ashes for the Poms.
Warren Saunders:
Wazza has very quickly made himself indispensable in our side and was once again the basis around
which we built our attack. His incredible consistency and accuracy from one end allowed us to attack at
the other. Wazza bowled a massive 285 overs 90 of which were maidens. He deserved an awful lot
more wickets than the 36 he took at 18.3. His effort in all circumstances is a lesson to all.
The 6 – 14 Wazza took against Saints to win the game on first innings for us was a special moment in
the season.
Dave Carson:
Carso at times through the season looks a test player. If he could maintain that consistency he is
capable of playing cricket at a level higher than first grade. His promotion up the order to open the
innings was a turning point. He took the responsibility of being our leading batsmen and led us to
consecutive victories against Gordon and Norths.
Annual Report 1998/99
University of New South Wales Cricket Club
Page 16
The century against Gordon an obvious highlight, however the real highlight for me was the 50 against
North Sydney on a green top which ensured a well deserved victory showed the maturity, concentration
technique and patience that the selectors I believe are looking for when they select a NSW side.
My only criticism of this great team man would be there were too many twenties and thirties not being
converted into 50’s and 100’s. If that happens look out!
Anthony Pratt:
“Cracker” started the season in awesome form with a match winning 65 and 4 for against Parramatta.
It was, we hoped the start of what would be a truly successful year. Unfortunately the rest is history. A
broken hand in round 10 cutting short his season and providing him with food for thought about his
cricketing future. Pratty did go on to take 17 wickets at 23.5 and on his day was a handful for batsmen.
It was a shame Pratty couldn’t have been a part of the late season success. He deserved to share in the
spoils. I look forward to playing more cricket in future years with Jatz.
Todd Hoare:
Toddy’s pre Xmas form was fantastic. His post Xmas form was on a par with his sledging - that is very
ordinary and disappointing despite promising a lot! Having said that it was Todd’s first year in First
grade he scored the most 50’s for our side and at times was the most technically correct and the most
likely to score runs. Perhaps I expected too much after the great start to the year. He managed 340 runs
for the season an excellent start to what I am sure will be an extremely successful cricket career at
UNSW.
More concentration in the nets the ability to learn from your mistakes and a greater desire to build an
innings and play in the V early will ensure success for Todd.
Mark Mullen:
A reluctant first grader if ever I saw one. This year saw Mullos start to realise the enormous potential
that he has as a cricketer and importantly start to believe that he is capable of playing first grade
cricket. Mullos at times was our stand out batsmen. His 74* against Easts one of the highlights of the
season. That partnership of 110 with Andy was the turning point in the match taking us out of all sorts
at 8-110.
His useful contributions with the ball added another dimension to our attack. Mullos has the ability to
make many more major contributions to this side in the years to come. A great team man that does an
awful lot behind the scenes to make the Club what it is.
Andy Neilan:
Andy had a terrific start to his first grade career. Thrown into the deep end he came up trumps. Some
more than useful contributions with the bat including the 61 against Easts in the memorable partnership
with Mullos which saw him cover drive G. Matthews for four in three consecutive deliveries and some
outstanding keeping sealed a fantastic rookie season. Continued work on his keeping and patience with
the bat will see Andy develop into an outstanding keeper batsmen prospect for NSW.
Michael Elliott:
Mick offered our side an awful lot when called up to ones. Whilst not having the greatest time of it with
the bat, Mick has the potential to turn himself into an outstanding player. Continued hard work on
Annual Report 1998/99
University of New South Wales Cricket Club
Page 17
technique, fitness and patience in the off season will ensure greater success for Mick in the years to
come. A highlight for Mick was the 50 odd against Gordon to set us on our way. Perhaps a more
important knock was the 24 against Norths the following weekend that got us off to a much needed
good start. He looked as solid as anybody against quality pace bowling on a green top.
Dave Heysen:
Dave made a fantastic impression when the given the chance in his first game in one’s against
Randwick where he bowled with genuine pace and swing. To drop him for the following game when
Wazza returned was one of the more difficult things I had to do. When he returned to one’s some games
later he continued his success.
Some outstanding spells against Easts, North Sydney and Sutherland had batsmen literally shaking in
their boots. To finish with 14 at 21 was a great start. A sensational discovery and we look for bigger
and better things from Dave next season as he will no doubt continue to improve.
Damon Dermody:
Damo was our lucky charm. His confidence and positive outlook added enormous value to a team that
was struggling with confidence. His impact was immediate, all the players lifted around him and the
team didn’t look back. Whilst he didn’t have a super time with the bat his 40 against Sutherland was
outstanding. You can’t keep a good man down, in four games Damo took 7 catches and assisted in
securing us 26 competition points.
Tim Buckett:
Despite not having a great time in one’s with the ball Buckos should have had a very satisfying time.
He once again proved he is more than capable of playing at this level. His obvious physical injuries just
holding him back. Nevertheless there were still some outstanding contributions primarily with the bat
from TB.
Michael Kovacs:
A very special mention to Kurly who answered our SOS at the start of the year. With the loss of B.
Nott to Adelaide we were left stranded without a recognised keeper. Kurls responded as only he can to
our request for him to come out of semi retirement to join us. All this despite nursing a pregnant wife
and the challenges of a demanding job. We are thankful Kurls and you are also one of the genuine
GOOD GUYS.
Others:
Cootsy, AJ, Rowan and Searley all proved they are more than capable of playing at this level. For
different reasons for all those individuals it didn’t happen as much as I would have liked. Never the
less, there is always next year.
Mark Jefferys:
The big thriller who has packed away his pens and pencils for good will be missed enormously by the
first grade side. Mark was more than a scorer he was a part of the team and provided enormous
assistance to me behind the scenes. Good luck in Newcastle and thanks again for your enormous
contributions over the past 4/5 seasons.

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank my beautiful wife Sheridan who despite all the goings on of
what appeared until the final four rounds to be an unsuccessful season, the trainings, the selection
meetings, the “dry” Friday nights, the “dry” Saturday nights prior to a Sunday game, the celebrations
when we either won or didn’t have to play on Sunday, the numerous Sunday games and all the useless
“stuff” that she would find me raving on about over a very drawn out 6-7 month period. She remained
100% supportive and full of encouragement. I couldn’t have done it with out her and am eternally
grateful.
A final thanks to Orca, Disc and “H” who provided enormous assistance and encouragement
throughout the year. Thanks to all the parents who travelled from near and far to provide much needed
support a special thank you to the Carsons and Hoares. A final thanks to all the guys I had the pleasure
of playing cricket with in this very turbulent yet extremely enjoyable year!! I shall never forget it! Good
luck in the millennium season.

SECOND GRADE REPORT
To say Second Grade had a disappointing year would obviously be an understatement. The side
throughout the year had difficulty distinguishing between a good side “on paper” and a good side “on
the field”. Too often we were beaten by apparent poorer sides.
It is difficult to enjoy cricket when you scan around the field and see a side full of capable and potential
First Graders that cannot perform consistently at enough to finish in the top 6 in Second Grade.
It is important that in the future we are able to realise that being successful is not looking good in the
nets or knowing a lot about the game but consistently performing at the highest level we are capable of.
This year we were not successful.
The season was not all bad however. The Club was fortunate enough to have another Pom who was
ineligible for First Grade. Luke Sutton came to Australia to improve his cricket and accelerate his
progression to First-Class cricket in England. [Insert own smart-arse comment here]. It is fair to say
that Luke achieved his goal. He also improved the cricket of anyone who played cricket with him or
spoke to him during his stay. Luke was a bonus for the Club and leaves behind big boots to fill. He
scored 549 runs in 14 innings at 42.32 which included 2 centuries and took 19 catches with the gloves.
The seasons other consistent performer was Tim Cox. This year was Tim’s first with the Club and Tim
was perhaps unlucky not to get the opportunities given to other first year players. Tim is always
competitive whether batting or bowling and is reliable tight bowling was at times a luxury for the
captain. Tim bowled 182 overs, 45 maidens and took 24 wickets for 399 runs at 16.62.
Tim Buckett also made significant contributions. He took 24 wickets at 13.29. His aggressive bowling
often provided us with early wickets. I hope Tim enjoyed his last season as a medium pacer, he assured
me he has made the switch to off spin to extend his career.
Other impressive individual performances included centuries to Mark Mullen (103) and Andrew
Johnson (119). Greg Dennis took 6 for 43 against Gordon and showed he is easily capable of
performing at that level.
The season’s team highlights included an outright victory against Fairfield. Set a target of 105 off 13
overs the total was reached off 11.2 overs with Mick Elliott 76 not out. The two other highlights would
be good wins against Randwick and Sutherland.
As stand-in captain for the second half of the season I enjoyed the various challenges. I also enjoyed
catching glimpses of great potential, some players shone more consistently than others and some
occasionally flickered. I look forward to greater things from Rowan Hamman, Tim Cox, Micklaus
Mag, Alex Lamb, Greg Dennis and David Heysen.

THIRD GRADE REPORT
Finishing just outside the top 6 was very disappointing given the players 3rd
Grade managed to march
out on to the field this season. Our comprehensive win over the eventual premiers (Sutherland) in the
last round was testament to the strength of the team and the successes we should have achieved.
It was primarily a function of player unavailability at various times and other players taking most of
the season before “discovering” their games. This, I believe, was the main cause of our inconsistent
performances.
But, as always, our failure to bring home the silverware should not mask the many positive aspects of
this season. Many of these are evident from my later discussion of the individual players. The most
important being that, despite our relative failures, the game was played and enjoyed in the right spirit.
Even in the fire of sledging and arrogance of some opposition that I can barely remember even at a first
grade level, the players remained calm and just played the game. Our only divergence from this
philosophy being the agreed need to give it to that bloke from Sutherland in the last game. It is
disappointing that young, talented cricketers who have a real future in the game, such as Daniel
Christian, are exposed to this sort of garbage. It is not the fact that talk and gamesmanship occurs on
the field, it is the trend for it to be delivered as personal attacks and in a very arrogant way. I trust that
the UNSWCC will always play it hard on the field but always as the sportsmen we aspire to be and
with a beer to be enjoyed with teamates and opposition alike each Saturday night.
Well……I’ve got to say that was beautiful!!!!! Now on to the Report.
Our losses to Parramatta and Sydney Uni early in the season were the performances that you could
probably say ultimately killed off our finals chances. We played badly in those games, particularly with
our batting. The mid-season batting debacles against St George and Gordon were also disappointing, as
well as our across the board apparent inability to land the ball anywhere but outside leg stump in the
one-dayers. If various players could have displayed the approach to their batting that was evident at the
end of the season in these early games we would have won the competition. Our bowling, even when
our ranks seemed thin, never really let us down (except perhaps Sydney Uni). Our batting stocks
always seemed full but did not deliver until it was too late. At the end of the season we discovered that
if we value our wickets and build innings the big scores will come. The performances of Sohail and
Daniel Christian at the end of the season were great examples of this and Stammy was the best
example all season to all batsmen who watched him play. He’s no Mark Waugh or Chris Chapman but
he seems to value his wicket more than any other and builds a score even when he knows he is not
batting well.
A huge thank you to Mrs (Sludgy) McLachlan who scored for us on so many occasions, often under
extreme difficulty (eg Sutherland), but always with a familiar smile and much needed support for the
team. Her son might let her down by not scoring the hundreds he should but this never seemed to
dampen her much valued support and assistance.
The players:
DANIEL BOWCOCK: I want to start with Bowy because I consider that his contributions to the team
and the style of cricket that this Club aspires to were outstanding. He is a batsman of rare skill and
ability, if perhaps still coming to terms with his own game. Crucial innings vs Mosman, North Sydney
and Sutherland stand out and inevitably led to our victories. But his batting has potential way beyond
this as anyone who has seen him play can attest. I think he is coming to terms with crucial aspects to
his batting and if so the sky is the limit. However, it was Bowy’s enthusiasm, encouragement, positive
thinking and well-timed words of inspiration that became the trademark of the side. We could have

floundered badly in the last quarter of the season, and half way through the Campbelltown game it
appeared we would. But it was Bowy’s contributions in the field (and that Campbelltown game stands
out, even though it was only indicative of his approach basically for the entire season) that, I believe,
almost single handedly invigorated us as a team. My thanks to Bowy who, although never officially
being made vice captain, was the vice captain both the team and I needed desperately.
DANIEL CHRISTIAN: I think everyone in the Club has come to realise that Daniel has the potential to
be a star of the future. His “numbers” both in 4th grade and 3
rd grade belie his actual contribution and
fail to tell the story of a 16 year old’s mature approach to the arduous task of competing in senior
cricket. Daniel’s big asset is that he listens, he wants to learn and he loves playing his cricket. I did not
mention his obvious talents because for a kid of his age those will always be wasted without the assets I
mentioned and which he possesses. The Club clearly sees a very bright future for Daniel and some
might say that we rushed him too quickly in to 3rd
grade. I don’t think so and I believe his performances
at the end of the year showed that he can easily handle 3rd
grade. With the patience, maturity and
confidence he shows the test for our club will be to ensure he has the appropriate opportunities and that
senior players continue to support him in his developing years.
JEREMY STAMM: It was well deserved that Stammy topped the averages this year in light of my
comments above. He has the potential to do better as he is not a “practiser” and he arguably did not
have as many opportunities as a lot of the other players. But he was a good team man – quiet but
committed and determined, always putting in the field and of course teaching everyone by example as to
how much their wicket is worth.
SOHAIL MOHIDEEN: Had an awesomely shocking start to the season and ended up being dropped to
4s for several games. A few solid innings down there were enough to convince that he was ready to
come back and display his natural talents in 3s and hopefully beyond. I think Sohail scored 3 fifties in
his 4 innings upon return and he only ever looked like getting out when the impulse to ferociously
square drive became too much. Sohail seemed to have finally sorted out an appropriate game plan to his
batting. He had obviously learned a lot from Stammy and he had eradicated the flick to leg and
ferocious square drive from his early innings repertoire. Although the square drive reared its head later
in the innings that was the right time to play it. Anything on the stumps was being hit straight down the
ground rather than attempts to get it through square leg that have plagued Sohail’s promising career for
a number of years. Always the finest of fieldsmen and, I believe, a promising finger spinner. We hope
Sohy will be back with the Club soon after his overseas sojourn as he has been a wonderful contributor
to our Grade scene, but maybe even more so in the development of our Green Shield players.
TALLAESEN FLEMING: A very talented player who’s innings against Syd Uni was the most
dominant seen in 3s all year. He got quite a few starts but needs to build these in to bigger innings for
his own sake and for that of the team. Also smashed a Sutherland first grade attack around in the first
PG game of the season to let everyone know of what he is capable. I believe he can become a very
dominant cricketer within the Club. It will, knowing Tallaesen, probably be as simple as a question of
how important his cricket is to him. I hope he tries hard to fulfill his potential because he has so much
to offer (fielding/agility need a bit of work though).
ZAC ZAVOS: Zac’s early season form had us thinking 2nd
grade, not 4th grade. Unfortunately, as we
know, cricket is a cruel game and a run of unlucky dismissals, good pills and questionable umpiring
can leave an opener’s confidence crushed. This definitely happened to Zac which is unfortunate because
he could easily move up the grades if things could run his way a little. Another good team man who
always had ideas and theories that were more than useful in keeping his old skipper on his toes. His
fielding (and obviously his bowling – ha, ha) is hampered by a dodgy back but the efforts to contribute
in the field were always there.

Page 27
RUSSELL THOMAS: Russell’s bowling improved tremendously this year and his 7 wicket haul
against a fairly strong Parramatta side was outstanding. Although inconsistent in line and length and
with some big issues to address in developing the rhythm he needs in his action, Russell has that innate
ability to pick up wickets. He bowled some absolute jaffas during the year that would knock a lot of
first class players over but he mixed some wayward stuff in there as well. If we can sort these rhythm
issues out I think Russell has a bright future as he swings the ball away from the bat and can generate
good pace. Fielding is improving and his last wicket partnership with Eric vs Petersham proved what
sought of contributions tailenders can make to the scoreboards they are then required to defend.
ERIC ZEHNER: A disrupted season due to overseas holidays and niggling injuries but, nevertheless, a
valuable contribution to the 3rd
Grade outfit. Is a genuine swinger of the ball and at good pace on his
day. He is suffering from some niggling back complaints but battled on, even experimenting with some
Derek Underwoodesque left arm orthodox stuff that was not too shabby at all – something he should
definitely continue working on fitting into his repertoire. A very competent bat as well, with limited
opportunities.
ROB “SLUDGE” McLACHLAN: A fantastic team and club man who’s results with the bat continue
to belie his ability. Affected somewhat by his mid season efforts to put speeding cops into hospital and
his bowling became limited. Slapped a couple down at first slip which is a sign of unwarranted lack of
self confidence rather than poor skills. Hopefully next season will be a big one for Sludgy.
PETER CARSON: A late start to the season saw Carso confined to 3rds which was a huge bonus for
our side. Ended up opening the batting (where he is undoubtedly suited) with some success and bowled
sensationally on occasions. Still needs to get the ball through the air a fraction quicker so that batsmen
can’t play him off the slow Sydney grade wickets. If he can then he will likely improve on his one first
grade game for the Club.
GREG DENNIS: A really good opening bowling prospect for the Club if we can get him started earlier
in the seasons and training a little more effectively. Has a very good outswinger bowled at pace with the
new ball and a most effective in swinger as the ball gets older (I hope not as many non-club members
read our report this year as seemed to last year or I will have just taken away some of Groggles’
mystery). Did well in 2nds when given a couple of opportunities at the end of the year.
MATT SANDERS: A disrupted season due to travel meant that we only had the Colonel for the first
half of the year. His awesomely punishing batting did not raise its ugly head as often as we would like
but he nevertheless made valuable contributions. Typical wicket-keeping psycho but a great bloke to
have in the team with his leadership skills and unselfish and helpful personality.
MICHAEL “DOUGY” MORSON: We were very privileged to have Dougy’s services for the last part
of the season as he is a very competent keeper and (although he didn’t show it in 3s) a top drawer
batsman. Unfortunately it looks as though Dougy’s UNSWCC career will be at least on hold for a
while due to his move to the Central Coast. He will be sadly missed as a player and Club personality
but I am sure we’ll still manage to see plenty of him. Good luck with the new addition to the family
(when he/she arrives) and keep watching those papers next year for a couple of UNSW premierships.
DAVID QUINLIN: Bowled pretty well for us in his few games in 3s although, for a variety of external
factors/reasons, was somewhat off his usual game. This saw him making way for a “younger” off
spinner with genuine flight and ability to give the ball an awesome rip (ie me). Managed to have his
pegs knocked over a few too many times as well which was unusual and perhaps simply indicative of
his battles “within”.
Annual Report 1998/99
University of New South Wales Cricket Club
Page 28
OTHERS: Traff, Capital and Damo all spent a little while in 3s and made valuable contributions, with
Damo’s ultimate promotion to 1s being a highlight as it reflected hard work, determination and a
wonderful mental approach. Christoph’s 3rd
Grade debut was also most impressive and he clearly can
play higher grade cricket. He unfortunately got no opportunities with the bat but his swing bowling was
right on the money but with little luck (the skipper slapping one down at first slip denying him an early
first 3rd
grade wicket). Matty Plunkett-Cole also grabbed a couple of games with us and showed he has
substantial potential as well. This may not be reflected in actual runs scored but one only has to look at
his innings against North Sydney, in difficult conditions that required a good solid start until things
settled down. He stuck his head down and did the job for us just when it was required as the loss of
early wickets would have cost us that game. Tex, AJ, Buckos and Neilo also made cameo appearances.
Thanks to Mark Retter, Jason Finlay and Pete Mitchell for valuable contributions as well. And a big
thanks to that Club legend, Peter Trimble, for his cameo come back. Immediately dominated and young
people immediately learned from him, which is what has made him one of the Club’s all time great
skippers. We would love to see him back on a more regular basis.

FOURTH GRADE REPORT
The 1998-99 4th grade report will unfortunately start along similar lines as it has over the last few
years…….. so close yet so far.
Once again we made the semi finals and once again we were not good enough to proceed any further.
Without sounding repetitious that is not totally correct because I still honestly believe we were good
enough to go all the way but small lapses of concentration at crucial times proved disastrous.
Regardless of the negatives that may be associated with our performance it must be remembered that 4th
grade did make the semi finals and that is a fine achievement in its self.
Of the players this year none were as successful or as dominant as Alex Williams. Alex had an
outstanding season as his figures indicate and I shudder to think that the year before he was
contemplating retirement. Alex was instrumental in our semi final placing and I found him to be such a
positive influence on the team. His fielding was always of a high standard and his bowling was useful
to say the least. He never backed away from the chat this year and gave as good as he got and his
performance in keeping the Sutherland players waiting at the drinks break was priceless. The only
disappointment was Alex being stranded on 99 not out. I hope for the Club’s sake that work
commitments will not keep him off the field this year.
Jungle had another solid season with the highlight being his 149 against Mosman before he ran himself
out through sheer exhaustion. He was to prove this year virtually impossible to dismiss this year with 5
not outs and 3 run outs against his name. His bowling lacked penetration in the early part of the season
but as the business end of the year approached this changed around. Once again 201 overs yielded only
1.76 runs per over and at times he is impossible to get away. I thought Jim was more relaxed this
season, perhaps he is finally mellowing after only 25 years of grade cricket.
Christoph Casper Von Willer had a very solid season averaging 31.5 with the bat and claiming 21
wickets. Chris bowled with good pace in the first half of the season and deservedly gained promotion to
3rd
grade. Chris will play higher grades in the future but there will always be a place for him in 4s.
Chris is also a rare breed of lower grade player that have captured the wicket of a Test cricketer and if
you have a spare hour he will talk you through the dismissal.
Jason Finlay can now lay claim that he is no longer a 5th grade bowler and if he continues along the
same line will play higher than 4th grade. Jason bowled with great pace during the year and his second
spell in the semi final on a flat deck was an inspired piece of bowling. Arabic became an integral part
of 4th grade and as the season went by he continued to improve. He should also work on his batting as
he has the basics to perform at a greater level. Being a St George supporter indicates that he is destined
to greatness.
David Jebb will look back on his season and reach for the carving knife, extolling the virtues of suicide
as an honourable way out whilst declaring his undying love for Bryson. In reality Dave will never really
appreciate his role in the team this year. Dave made my job as captain this year the easiest its been over
the last four years. His encouragement and support for my captaincy was greatly appreciated and I
believe this year I was at ease and fully in control throughout the season as a result of his calm and
measured views. Statistics can be deceiving at times and this is one of those occasions. Dave is a fine
cricketer and a good friend and I could not have had a better understudy. I believe if he works on his
leggies he will extend his career much in the same vein as Jungle and with the ever reliable Bryson
retrieving those practice balls from the nets things are certainly looking positive.
A disturbing feature this year was the ugly reoccurrence of baseless, mindless sledging from simple
minded morons who had unsubstantiated claims of being cricketers. In most instances the ones with the
biggest mouths were the ones with the least ability but unfortunately their tactics worked on occasions.
Annual Report 1998/99
University of New South Wales Cricket Club
Page 32
Sometimes I feel that we at the UNSWCC are not tough enough mentally. There is no need to react to
this type of behaviour unless it is of a personal nature then carte blanche should take precedence. I was
disappointed with the gutless approach of umpires this year and the way in which they allowed things to
continue. Certain clubs such as Penrith and Sutherland should be absolutely disgusted with the way
their players behaved and if the captains cannot control them then get someone who can. I thought the
behaviour of the UNSW 4th grade players was of the highest standard possible and I am proud of the
way in which played the game.
I would like to thank all the players this year for once again making it such an enjoyable season.
Thoughts of retirement are put aside when I have the opportunity to play along side such fine cricketers
but more importantly such great blokes. I am sure that we shall capture that 4th grade premiership in the
not too distant future.
Thanks again to everyone involved with making the UNSWCC the number one Club in Sydney Grade
Cricket.

Annual Report 1998/99

FIFTH GRADE REPORT
This was a season that started and finished badly. In between times, the team strung together a series of
wins including wins over some teams higher on the ladder.
The team was very well captained by Gavin Harris who knows a thing or two about management and
maintained good team spirit and cohesion. Gavin is an inspirational leader who can come in and score a
quick fifty, take a great catch , take vital wickets or anchor the boat race team, when the team needs it.
I have been fortunate in the last few years to play with 2 excellent fifth grade captains in “Hard Eights”
Harris and Colonel Sanders.
The turning point for us came when we had major team changes coming into the St George game and
ending up losing a game that should have been won. I guess the changes paid off in a couple of ways as
it did give us a look at some very good prospects for the future in Michael Wilding, Ian Ornelius and
Andrew Langdon. All three look good cricketers in the making. Some of the players who did go up to
Fourth Grade played important roles in their win that day and that was important in them making the
semis. It’s an ill wind that blows nobody some good!
Best of the batsman were Gavin with 407 at 31, Farmer Lindsay with 333 at 33, Andrew Cavill with
218 at 27 and Chris Jameson with 229 at 25. Scott Schirmer and Todd Martin also played some good
innings. The big improver was Cav who I think is going to have a big year as an all-rounder in
1999/2000.
Bowling was not always our strong point although few teams scored big totals against us. Late in the
season, the team had 2 “experienced” spinners if that term can be applied to Messrs Quinlan and Gregg
who are not huge rotators of the ball. Both bowlers took their fair share of wickets and so did Gavin.
The opening bowlers all probably needed the year of experience in grade and will probably all have
better years next season. Mustard Lucas bowled some genuinely good spells but just needs to build up
a little and begin to believe that he can perform well in grade. You are going to be a good bowler
Mustard! Geiran “Kit” Clowes returned to cricket after a 10 year break and bowled really really
quickly at times. Big Ben Von Willer also bowled consistently well in his few appearances.
Stars in the field were Tim Martin and Andrew Cavill who both took brilliant catches. Keepers Dorge
and Sanders both performed consistently well with 14 and 11 dismissals respectively and as a bowler it
is comforting to have either guy behind the stumps.
A reasonable year overall but we really should have made the semi finals. However it was an enjoyable
year and there is always a another year Scarlett.

SIXTH GRADE REPORT
The 6th grade season can be summed up as a year of lost opportunities. We were one of only 4 grade
clubs in the newly formed competition and represented a significant opportunity to score a
championship for the club.
The Metropolitan Cup is a brainchild of Peter Daffen of the local park Cricket fame. His diligent work
created a “turf” competition, which utilises the spare ground available on a weekly basis in grade and
shires clubs.
The competition was highly successful providing a cricketing platform for the young cricketers and will
continue grow from strength to strength in coming years. It provides an outlet for the fringe players in
the grade and shires clubs to sharpen their skills whilst awaiting an opportunity.
The team to beat in this year’s competition was always the one and only club not represented by a
shires or a grade club, Maccabi. The Maccabi side consisted of a former shield player Steve Hertzberg
who contributed positively to the competition.
Our season kicked off well with a win against the shires club, South Sydney. Mark Dorge justified his
elevation to higher honours with a well compiled 91. We also discovered a leg spin bowling talent in the
form of Hammad Bhatti, who collected a match best 5/19. The match was somewhat made
controversial by a draconian rule change mid-game that forced us to complete our innings in 60 overs.
Unfortunately we only decided on that ruling after batting for 55 overs and arguing for 30 minutes.
We were then confronted with the gun team in the competition in the form of Maccabi. They were full
of talent in both the bowling and batting and we went down gracefully in the second round. The match
also set the scene for the rest of the season in the selection follies that followed later. It became evident
that our team was going to be rotating large numbers of faces every match.
The third round was a success against Petersham, with Scoots scoring a ton and Glenn Shepherd taking
5/18. We were set for good season at this stage.
Fourth round against North Sydney was a disappointment as we performed badly in the first innings to
concede defeat. We showed our true potential in the second innings scoring 3/169. Chris McNamara
and Gavin Reddleman scored 70 s.
Fifth round was a triumph for Andrew Cavill and the team. Cav bowled for 4/13 and scored 96,
opening the batting. Combi also bowled well for 3/44 & 3/34. The emerging talent of Michael Shepherd
showed up and the veteran Chris Anderson scored 50. This was to set the tone for match outcomes for
the rest of the season with the outright being missed by a catch and 2 wickets. Entering the last over of
the day, Combi had to take 3 wickets to win. The first 3 balls were hit around as Anthony Wunch
sledged the batsman. The batsman attempted to hit the 4th ball in anger, which was caught one-handed
by Wunchy at point, leaping in to air Jonty style. This set the scene for us to take 2 wickets in 2 balls to
make history. The 5th ball was edged to slips by the new batsman and the catch was unfortunately
dropped. Had it been caught, Combi would have been bowling the last ball of the day for a hat-trick
and an outright win.
Sixth round once again was a success with Andrew Cavill scoring his first century for the club. Chris
Anderson scored a follow up 50 to put us in a commanding position in the ladder. Anthony Acret
bowled well to take 3/29 against Canterbury-Bexley. The chase for the outright was another lost
opportunity with Canterbury finishing on 6/99.
Annual Report 1998/99

Page 39
The seventh round was failure as we went down to Randwick at the Kenso Oval. We were caught in a
wet green top and their batsmen coped better under the conditions.
The eighth round against Auburn, after the Christmas break was another success. We discovered a
sporting talent in Mick Anderson, the younger brother of Chris. Chasing 191, we were in trouble at
6/74. Mick scored 129 in his maiden game for the club with good support from Anthony Acret. Young
Louie Joseph bowled leggies for 4/41. Once again the outright eluded us. Mick Anderson showed his
all-round skills by bowling with venom to take 4/45. He would have had another 4 more had the catches
been caught.
The 9th and 10
th rounds were wash-outs. This was to have a devastating effect on our finals chances as
the teams we were to have played were “winnable” matches.
The 11th round once again was against the gun team on fire. We went down against Maccabi for the
second time in the season.
The 12th round against North Sydney at the lush North Sydney No. 2 oval unfortunately did not turn
out for the better. However, with a score of 286 at the end of the first day, we were justifiably proud of
our achievements. Michael Shepherd scored a much promised ton and Mick Anderson scored 93. North
Sydney batting were too solid in the second day with them passing our score 5 down. Young David
Kachor bowled well for 2/70, Mick Anderson 3/47 and Anthony Acret took 3/33. With a first innings
score of 286, this has to considered a lost opportunity.
Round 13 was a wash-out and the last round was against Pennant Hills on a Green top. The last match
of the competition was the first match on this wicket for the season. We bowled first with Mustard
opening the bowling. From having P’hills at 8/189, we allowed them to skip away to 247. Our batsmen
unfortunately did not cope well on the green top and we were all out for 107. The second inning turned
into a farce with P’hills playing on for practice. We needed an outright win to reach the finals ahead of
2 other teams, and both of the other teams ended up scoring outrights. Despite the somewhat
questionable results, we missed the finals with sadness.
Next year should be a little more successful with the experience gained this year.

7TH GRADE REPORT
“UNI BOONIES”
There is an age old saying that goes something like this……..
Cricket is a gentlemen’s’ game played by ruffians,
While Rugby is a ruffians’ game played by gentlemen.
A survey of the ranks of the UNSW Rugby Club in 1998 indicated one thing….. there were no
gentlemen, only ruffians. As a matter of logic therefore, it was decided that a cricket team should be
formed. The Cricket Club was duly consulted and lo! 7th grade was born!
Having assembled a small squad of 35 in very quick time, the first training session was held at a
solitary cricket net, deep in the heart of sunny Rosebery. This session revealed several things. First,
no-one had a set of whites that fitted them any more. Second, although it had been several years since
members of the squad had played the game, there was actually a smattering of cricketing talent in the
ranks. Third, and most important, the side was given a nick-name…..The “Uni Boonies”. A name that
stuck better than a sharp chance in the hands of the great short-leg himself.
The Boonies spent their inaugural season in 5th grade at Moore Park, a competition manned by a
mixture of retired Sheffield Shield players and up and coming 30 year old youngsters. Having shaken
off the cobwebs with an unlucky first round loss, the side clicked into gear, winning 5 out of 7 matches
in the first half of the season and turning for home at the top of the table. The most memorable
highlight of the early part of the season was the game against Randwick, where a depleted Boonies
team dismissed the opposition before tea on the first day, with one of the most devastating fielding
performances ever seen on Moore Park. Our first outright victory was subsequently obtained by a nine
wicket margin, the opposition claiming that they had never seen anything like it in Moore Park 5th
grade.
The post-Christmas session began well for the side, with the inaugural Uni Boonies ladies day being a
notable highlight. The minor premiership was effectively secured in round 12 (out of 14) and although
the team’s form fell away somewhat in the last three rounds, there is no doubt that the Boonies were the
best side in the competition throughout the season. After round 14, we finished 7 points clear of our
nearest rivals.
The semi-final was a real nail-biter. Superb bowling performances by Conrad Strahorn (5/27), Todd
Payne (3/51) and Damian Taylor (2/24) saw Souths Juniors tumble for 122. In reply, the Boonies had
an untimely batting collapse, finding ourselves at 7/83 overnight. Once again though, opener Matty
Roberts held the innings together with a classy 89 n.o. and we crept home by one wicket.
So it was that in our first year, the Uni Boonies faced the pressure of being the only UNSW side to
make the Grand Final. Facing the might of the Coast Cricket Club, another unfortunate batting
collapse on Day 1 saw us fall to 9/89. Our saviours this time were Tim Smart (79n.o.) and Damian
Taylor (23), who added 66 for the final wicket to set a competitive total of 155. In reply, the Coast
plodded to 4/148 at tea on day 2, with the Boonies attacking aggressively but without luck. In true
Boonie spirit though, the team came out fighting after the interval and almost snatched the most
unlikely of victories. Some fine bowling by Damian Taylor (5/46) and Todd Payne (2/34) saw the
Coast slump to 8/150 within 6 overs. The last 6 runs came extremely shakily, with the Boonies
Annual Report 1998/99
University of New South Wales Cricket Club
Page 44
painstakingly close to removing the Coast tailenders. Despite the loss, the club can be proud of the
fighting performance put in by the side.
In such a successful first season, it is not surprising that there were some stunning individual
performances. In the batting department, Matty Roberts clocked up 698 runs at an average of 77.6,
thereby winning the Moore Park 5th Grade batting average trophy. He scored 2 unbeaten centuries and
5 fifties in his 12 innings this year, with a top score of 125n.o. Damian Taylor led the bowlers, with 50
wickets at 10.8, including four 5 wicket hauls and match best figures of 9/37 over 2 innings. Not
surprisingly, Damian won the Moore Park 5th Grade bowling average trophy.
This is not to say that the team relied excessively on the performance of these individuals. In fact, the
most notable quality of the Boonies is the consistency of abilities among squad members. This enabled
over 30 players to get a game this season.
Finally, thanks must go to the more able members of the Club who assisted in supporting the 7th Grade
concept from the beginning and helped turn our first season into a successful one. Special mention
must be made of Mark Mullen, Jim Dixon and Andrew Jones in this regard. The Boonies were made to
feel extremely welcome and we look forward to contributing more to the club next year.

POIDEVIN GRAY SHIELD REPORT
To say that 1998-99 was a disappointing year for the UNSWCC’s PG side would be an
understatement. From what looked like a promising start to the season against Sutherland (narrowly
losing with 1 over remaining) we played inconsistent cricket thereafter and it took us until the final
game of the season to secure our only victory.
Chasing 256 against Easts we reached their total 2 wickets down in just 39 overs with Rowan Hamman
scoring a magnificent 171no and completely demoralising the opposition. Considering 6 out of our top
7 batsmen played in 2nd grade or above this year, batting performances like this should have been more
frequent.
Tim Cox was our most consistent performer, bowling with unerring accuracy to finish the season with
11 wickets at an average of 19. Well done also to Mick Elliott who batted and bowled steadily
throughout the season.
Thanks must go to Greg Hackney, Disco and to those who came to the matches for their support and
encouragement throughout the season. Thanks also to Andrew Langdon, Daniel Christian and Sam
Pararajasingham who all showed they were more than capable of stepping up to PG’s level.
This year’s season will serve as a source of motivation for those players returning next year and
hopefully provide some good memories for all involved.

A.W.GREEN SHIELD REPORT
1998/99
Expectations for this season were understandably high, with six of the players returning from last year's
side and with the intense off-season preparations which had been made. The season started and
finished brilliantly with some crushing wins over Wests and Randwick. In the middle part, however,
aside from a Daniel Christian inspired annihilation of Petersham-Marrickville, the side was
inexplicably unable to close out games in which they had gained the ascendancy. Once again the
success of the season should be measured beyond the three from seven match winning record. All 13
players in the final squad had developed their game and had become better and more mentally strong
cricketers.
From an individual perspective, Daniel Christian's all-round performances and Andrew Langdon's left
arm orthodox bowling were the highlights. Both these cricketers proved throughout the season that
they are amongst the cream of U/16 cricketers in NSW. Daniel Christian's selection in the Combined
Green Shield side, the first UNSW player to achieve this feat, was just reward for an outstanding
season.
Samuel Pararajasingham co-captained the side with distinction. Sam showed only glimpses of his
considerable talent and class as a top-order batsman, but it was enough to confirm his potential as a
heavy run-scorer for the Club in years to come.
Ben Wolrige with his cool-headed approach to the game, was the major revelation of the season and
should be an exciting young prospect for the Club in future years, in particular next year's Green Shield
season.
Although only playing five of the seven games during the season, the fast hands and tidy work behind
the stumps of wicketkeeper , Mark Tartak, was also praiseworthy.
Anthony Allan's aggressive yet sensible approach to the game was also impressive. His late in the
innings cameos with the bat and his generally accurate medium-paced bowling were invaluable assets
to the side.
Mark Bruce's opening batting was always solid and by season's end he had learnt the value of singles in
wresting the initiative from the opposition.
A combination of misfortune and poor judgement cost Mihkel Wilding the sort of season that he was
capable of producing with the bat. David Kachor's new ball bursts were occasionally destructive.
Shaylin Moodliar's stylish technique and potential went frustratingly unfulfilled throughout the season.
Louis Joseph's leg-break bowling was generally quite reliable. Ian Ornelas was known as the Iceman.
While the experience gained throughout the season by Daniel Tartak should stand him in good stead for
his two future years of Green Shield cricket.
vs Western Suburbs at Blick
UNSW 6 for 240 (D Christian 68 M Wilding 55 A Allan 44) def Wests 130 (D Kachor 3-27, A
Langdon 3-17, D Christian 2-32).
Annual Report 1998/99
University of New South Wales Cricket Club
Page 50
This was a total team effort in registering our first win in the opening game. The win was perhaps even
more comprehensive than the final scores might suggest, with Wests being 7 for 30 at one stage during
their chase.
vs Campbelltown at the Village Green
UNSW 130 (M Bruce 28 D Christian 19) lost to Campbelltown 4 for 131 (A Langdon 2-42)
The expectations of a tough game from this strong Campbelltown side were well and truly vindicated.
Some tight bowling and fielding from the Ghosts restricted us at lunch to 2 for 100 from 44 overs. An
inability to find the gaps or run quick singles also contributed to our woes. In the end this paltry total
was not nearly enough against the title favourites, notwithstanding a fiery opening spell from Daniel
Christian and an excellent account of left arm orthodox from Andrew Langdon.
vs St George at Hurstville
UNSW 160 (S Pararajasingham 64 M Bruce 28) lost to St George 2 for 161
Sitting pretty at 1 for 85 after 28 overs, disaster then struck in the form of a batting collapse of
monumental proportions. Losing 7 for 13 in the period just prior to lunch sealed our ultimate defeat.
vs Petersham-Marrickville at the Village Green
UNSW 5 for 280 (D Christian 160 no M Wilding 41 B Wolrige 23no) defeated Petes 8 for 180 ( A
Langdon 2-26 D Christian 2-18)
Clearly this match was most notable for the awesome individual display from Daniel Christian. He
strode to the wicket when the team was on the ropes at 3 for 30, but with his bludgeoning style, turned
the match on its head. On a slow outfield and slow pitch he registered the Club's first Green Shield ton
and the highest individual score from a Green Shield player for the season. This was followed by 12
overs of genuinely rapid bowling which killed the match as a contest after his first six overs.
vs Sutherland at Caringbah
UNSW 150 (S Pararajasingham 32 D Christian 34) lost to Sutherland 7 for 152 ( D Christian 3-30)
Once again the side was unable to capitalise on their strong start, going from 3 for 100 from 40 overs
to self-destructing for 150 in a disappointing display from the middle and late order batting. This
notwithstanding Daniel Christian came out breathing fire and brimstone in a spell which some pundits
said was the fastest seen from an U/16 cricketer. Ably supported by David Kachor, they cut a swathe
through the Sharks top order to have them at 6 for 70. Alas, a stylish unbeaten century from
Sutherland's Dudman snatched a victory from our grasp in the penultimate (59th) over.
vs Eastern Suburbs at Waverley
Easts 138 (A Langdon 4-7) def UNSW 134 (A Allan 34 B Wolrige 36)
Andrew Langdon's absolutely brilliant 12 over (8 maiden) spell of left arm orthodox counted for nought
as we allowed Easts back in to the match after having them 8 for 50. The run chase aborted for want
of maturity. The loss in this game was the season's nadir.
vs Randwick at David Phillips North
UNSW 4 for 240 (S Pararajasingham 46 M Bruce 48 D Christian 83no A Allan 40) defeated
Randwick 80 (A Langdon 3-17 B Wolrige 4-12)
Annual Report 1998/99

Page 51
It was a credit to the character of the team to bounce back so strongly from the result of the previous
match. An almost flawless all-round team performance ensured our emphatic victory. An end to the
season which could not have been better scripted also provided opportunity to reflect on what might
have been had the team realised this potential earlier in the season.
Regardless of the results on the field, the institution by the Club of a side in the Green Shield
competition is certainly a step in the right direction. If properly administered it will ensure the Club
continues to attract a steady stream of quality cricketers to fly the Club's banner in the years to come.

GREEN SHIELD REPORT
1997/98
The Club took a plunge into the deep end in its historic decision to enter a team in the A W Green
Shield competition. Fourteen under 16 cricketers were assembled from all over Sydney to represent the
Club in its inaugural season.
In what was always going to be a harsh initiation for all involved, both players and the Club, the
performance of the team was admirable. Notable individual performances during the season included
half tons to Daniel Christian and Samuel Pararajasingham, and a five wicket haul to Mihkel Wilding.
The able and often inspirational leadership of Joshua Hill also deserves special mention.
The development of individual players and the team as a whole throughout the course of the season was
one of the many pleasing aspects to come out of this historic year. The invaluable experience of this
inaugural season will undoubtedly be the stepping stone for improvement in future years, most notably
by the six returning players in 1998/99.
Although the winless season might suggest otherwise, this season was a creditable success. The Club
extends its congratulations to the fine efforts of all members of this inaugural UNSWCC Green Shield
team.

LADIES’ TEAM REPORT
The past season has been one of our best for a while in that we only just missed out on a position in the
semi-finals. This was a result of a number of late-in-the-season wins, which has given us a great deal
of confidence for the next season starting at the end of the year.
Our main problem yet again was the recurring nightmare of not fielding a full team. Each season we
seem to have a real problem with drop-offs after Christmas, so we will have to ensure that we have a
larger number of reserve players next time. However, we are very pleased with the core team we have
established this year.
In the batting, Carols and Anne C made a formidable opening team, facing without fear the fastest
bowlers in the grade, leaving Gemma and Cassandra room to score the majority of the runs (which they
did).
Gemma was forced to retire (on 50) twice this season, ending with an aggregate of 197 and an average
of 24.6. Our newest recruit of now legendary status, Cassandra, scored six half centuries with a top
score of 88 n.o to end the season on a whopping 434 runs and an average of 62. These great figures,
along with a bowling average of 13.2 (24 wickets), earned Cass the SWCA trophy for Player of the
Year, as well as highest batting aggregate and highest batting average. Well done Cass!
Wendles and El also batted extremely well in the mid order and along with Lisa, Jill, Nina, Kay, and
Chissa, were always there to score a winning run, or at least to stay in while Cassandra could score.
Our bowling improved a great deal this season. Gemma, our scariest fast bowler for years, took the
honours with 21 wickets at a match winning average of 8.3. Along with Cass, Jill and El made up our
fiercesome bowling attack ending with 10 wickets apiece and averages of 21.5 and 27.2 respectively.
Anne C, Lisa, Nina, and Carols each made their own little contribution when necessary and even got a
few wickets too.
Our fielding also was very tight this season. Even without Ang diving all over the place we managed to
find the inspiration to put our bodies on the line time and time again. Some fantastic catches were
made and our main concern next season will be to block all those gaps by actually having a full team.
That said, we look forward to next season being the most successful yet! See you in the finals!!

CLUB RECORDS
Team and partnership records apply to the years in the Sydney Grade Competition - from and including
the season 1973-74. For records prior to the 1972-73 season refer to the 1972-73 Annual Report
Municipal and Shires Competition. Performances in teams for which not all club members are eligible
(Poidevin-Gray and Intervarsity) are not included - details can be obtained in past annual reports. A
minimum of 250 runs or 15 wickets is required to qualify for batting or bowling records. Only the
initial record maker is identified in the event of tied records.
