We are happy to announce that Sarah Zentner will be the English Office’s new Federal Work Study (FWS) Student Worker for the 2014-2015 academic year. Sarah is an English major, was a tutor in The Writing Center this past year, and will be a senior next year. This summer she is participating in the London Study Abroad Program in Dr. Cynthia Caywood’s and Dr. David Hay’s “London Plays in Production” course! Sarah is also part of the Residence Hall Association and the Founders Chapel Choir. We welcome Sarah to the English Office!

From Inside USD: Malachi Black, new assistant professor of English and Creative Writing, is a new member of the Col-lege of Arts and Sciences English faculty and has hit the ground running. Black’s poetry will be featured in the Spring 2014 issue of Ploughshares. Q: You’re from the east coast. What brought you to California and to USD? I left New York City in the summer of 2007, and have since lived in Texas, Massachusetts, Utah, and Georgia, so California will be my

fifth state in seven years. The thrillingly critical difference is that California, and USD, more specifi-cally, constitutes a destination – in vital contrast to my so many recent stopovers. What brings me to California, of course, is USD: its uncommon and very real commitment to intellectual, pedagogi-cal, and interpersonal community, integrity, and accomplishment. In terms of attractions, I can’t help but remark, too, on the richly affecting beauty of the university, both as aesthetic installation and as habitable academic space. When I first visited, in February, my sublime experience of the panoramic Garden of the Sea united me, I’ve imagined, with a great many onetime nomads for whom such a view was an invitation to stay. I’m excited to have arrived – to mark simultaneous ending and beginning – and to be unpacking, permanently, at long last. Read the full article at: htttp://www.sandiego.edu/insideusd/?p=37187.

TOAST, by Julie Christen, Graduating English Major (with an emphasis in Creative Writing)

Here’s to taking home a stack of 20 stories or poems And thinking, “There goes my weekend,” when I had to respond to them all. On the other hand, here’s to reading through 20 thoughtful responses And feeling lucky enough to have 20 classmates who care. Here’s to writing poetry, a dreaded medium at first, Then realizing it’s not so bad when everyone else has to do it, too. Here’s to crafting a complete story in 300 words or less. Here’s to making stories about toilet bowls and teenage ghosts And navy women fun to read. Here’s to having someone’s back in workshop when No one else agrees, and here’s to occasionally being the person No one seems to agree with. Here’s to clever titles, to experimenting with imagery, And to late nights staying up just to finish a story. Here’s to the energy we had on days when someone Brought doughnuts, and the subsequent silence of our sugar crash. Here’s to those of you who will go on to Intermediate Fiction or Nonfiction or Poetry. I’m already jealous of the great things I know you’ll do With your writing. And even if you don’t continue writing, here’s to all of you for Being a part of my last semester here.

*Cheers*

2014 Rattle Poetry Prize: The annual Rattle Poetry Prize offers $5,000 for a single po-em to be published in the winter issue of the magazine. Ten finalists will also receive $100 each and publication, and be eligible for the $1,000 Readers’ Choice Award, to be selected by subscriber and entrant vote. Additional poems from the entries are frequent-ly offered publication as well. Open to writers, worldwide. Postmark deadline is: July 15, 2014. Electronic submissions are accepted as well. Visit our website for more information: http://www.rattle.com/poetry/prize/about. With the winners judged in a blind review by the editors to ensure a fair and consistent selection, an entry fee that is simply a one-year subscription to the maga-zine—and now a large Readers’ Choice Award to be chosen by the writers themselves—we’ve de-signed the Rattle Poetry Prize to be one of the most writer-friendly contests around. †

Summer Writing Project: It's summer, and though you might be missing the writing community on campus, or looking for an opportunity to have your writing published, fear not! The Summer Writing Project is here! This is the first year of the Project, a collaboration between Black Hill Press, JukePop, and California Public Libraries. As a participant in the project, you have the opportunity to write and submit your story chapter-by-chapter, getting feedback and reader responses with each installment. How to participate: Write a novella* and submit chapters via jukepop.com** Selected novellas will be distributed to partner libraries based on reader analytics (retention + read-ing time) and presented in conjunction with Summer Reading programs Black Hill Press will select three (3) novellas to be published as a special Summer Writing Project collection with cover artwork by Jeannie Phan. * Accepted novella word range: 10,000 to 30,000 (Black Hill Press, however, is less interested with word counting and more concerned with compelling characters and evocative moments.) ** All entries must follow JukePop’s criteria for submissions (jukepop.com/home/submissions). Please check out the attached materials, visit us at blackhillpress.com/summerwritingproject. †

Etiquette Tip-of-the-Week: It's Wise to Personalize. Etiquette is about be-ing attentive to the people around us. Whether writing a follow up thank you letter for an interview or a client meeting, personalize it. Include details of what you talked about in the meeting. It's a mistake to write a generic thank you that looks like it could have been cut and pasted with different names and compa-nies: "Thank you for telling me more about the position at (fill in the organization). I feel like my skills would make me a valuable member of your team." Make the person feel like you are talking to him/her and not just anyone: 1. "I was inspired by your story about how you started out in manufacturing..."; 2. "You are interested in a greater online presence for your athletic clothing line, and I have proven experience in growing several student or-ganizations through social media."; 3. "Attached is the online advertising information we talked about. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with me."; 4. "I enjoyed meeting you and Manny Products, your Vice President of Consumer Research."; and 5. "I will follow up with you on the week of June 8th. Congratulations on your first grandchild and enjoy your time off." The most valuable part of personalizing a business letter? It says to the person, "I was listening." Source: Culture and Manners Institute, 4/30/14, at http://www.cultureandmanners.com/, sign up for Etiquette-Tip-of-the-Week! †

Tuscany Prize for Catholic Fiction: The Tuscany Prize for Catholic Fiction is a literary prize to promote writers and great undiscovered stories of Catholic fiction. Do you have a manuscript? A Novel? A Young Adult Novel? A short story? Would you like it published? Your self-published or unpublished work could be worth up to $5,000! Now in its third year, the cash prizes totaling $10,000 rank among the top offerings (even among national contests) in the literary world. The prize is to encourage authors of Catholic fiction to break out and go from "up-and-coming" to "have arrived". Catholic fiction doesn't need (nor should) hit the reader over the head with apologetics, judgement or theology. To be effective in expression, the prose must speak to reader's intellect, heart and imagination. That's what we want to cultivate. Submission deadline: June 30, 2014. More info at: http://tuscanypress.com/tuscany-prize.php. †

Building on challenges in mentoring identified in session one, part two will continue the discussion and focus on how to establish mutually beneficial expectations and how to communicate expectations to undergraduate researchers. Additionally, the workshop will provide tools to help you find out what expectations your mentees have of you and how to design goals and projects for your mentee that weigh the goals of your mentee with the goals of your research group. This session will be co-facilitated by Dr. Sonia Zarate, Director for the Office of Undergraduate Research and Dr. Bradley Bond, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies. Green Move-Out: Mind Full, or Mindful? USD was selected to be part of a nation-al campaign called “Give and Go” through Keep America Beautiful. We have partnered with our local Goodwill to collect gently used items. USD will donate all textile items (clothing, bedding, towels, rugs) to Goodwill and support our local community. We will keep all household items, kitchen items, shower items, and electronics to resell in the beginning of Fall semester at heavily reduced prices. Revenue from those sales will go towards sustainability initiatives and pro-jects on campus, grants to students and faculty, student scholarships, and nonprofit sustainable or-ganizations in the community. http://sites.sandiego.edu/sustainability/green-move-out/.
