Message from the Dean

02 << >> 03>> Nowadays computer science is present in all fields of economy, education, health care, science, culture and sport. We talk about information society whose characteristics are extraor-dinary dynamics, world globalisation, and shrinking of time and distances. Computers are hidden even inside miniature devices used in everyday life. Life without computer networks is awkward and practically unimaginable. As regards computer and information science there are two views - a view of an everyday man who regards a computer as a device facilitating his everyday life habits and a view of an expert who does not regard a computer only as a means but also as an object of his undivided attention. Naturally, the extraordinary dynamics of development and the implementation of new and new technologies force upon us an increased specialisation in this field, too. The staff of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science is well aware of this, thus providing the acquisition of nec-essary skills both in pedagogical sense and in the sense of development and research.

As well as its field of research, the Faculty of Computer and Information Science is young and dynamic. The studies in com-puter and information science in Ljubljana were introduced as early as 30 years ago, while the Faculty of Computer and Information Science acquired an independent status in 1996. Since that moment the number of students has practically dou-bled, which caused, in order to provide optimal working con-ditions, the limitation of vacancies due to restrictions in terms of space and consequently in terms of staff.

The Faculty of Computer and Information Science strives to keep up with rapid changes within the field, thus updating training programmes, taking good care of well-equipped computer rooms and of contemporary laboratories for development and research

that host numerous development projects and fundamental scien-tific research. In terms of education the Faculty covers three graduate and two postgraduate programmes.

The quality of pedagogical and scientific research activities is influenced also by a high level of integration of the fac-ulty and its staff in international environment. As collabora-tion with international institutions is very important to the Faculty, so is the exchange of students. With this brochure and included CD, we would like to provide a brief guide to the study programs we offer for English speaking students. We hope that this information will help you in surveying our programs and we are looking forward to seeing you in Ljubljana.

The Faculty of Computer and Information Science was founded on 1 January 1996 when the previous Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was split into two new facul-ties. However, the under-graduate programme in computer sci-ence at the University of Ljubljana started in the academic year 1973/74, first as an elective programme after the second year of electrical engineering study, and since 1982 as an independent four year programme.

Until now more than 1600 students finished the undergraduate programme in computer and information science reaching the Ing. or Dipl. Ing. degree. On the postgraduate level more than 236 students reached the Masters degree (M.Sc.) and 69 the Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in computer and information sci-ence. Currently, there are about 1627 undergraduate and 146 postgraduate students at the Faculty. The Faculty has about 97 employees, 78 of them as teaching and research staff. The building which houses the Faculty of Computer and Information Science is shared with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The Faculty of Computer and Information Science has 7 teach-ing laboratories equipped with a total of about 135 networked personal computers and shares with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering 19 lecture halls. The research laboratories are equipped with about 530 personal computers or workstations.

The Faculty’s central computer serves as the main e-mail and web server. The Faculty’s local network is connected to the Internet through the University’s network “Metulj” (Butterfly) and the Academic Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES). Practically all classrooms are covered by wireless network. The Faculty has a joint library with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. It houses a large collection of books, textbooks and journals and offers access to several on-line services and databases. Both faculties also share a publishing depart-ment which is engaged primarily in publishing textbooks in Slovenian (original and translated) for students.

By AirThe Ljubljana airport at Brnik is about 20 km North-West from the center of Ljubljana (see Fig. 2). It has fairly good connections with other European airports (Frankfurt, Munich, London, Zurich, Copenhagen, Paris, etc.) and is served besides Adria, the national Slovenian air carrier, by a number of other major European airlines.

By Air and RailVia Austria: By plane to Vienna, Graz or Klagenfurt airport and by train to Ljubljana (direct trains go twice daily on weekdays)Via Germany: By plane to Munich and by train to Ljubljana (a direct train goes once every day)Via Croatia: By plane to Zagreb and by train to LjubljanaVia Italy: By plane to Venice or Trieste and by train to Ljubljana

By RailLjubljana has good railway links with Austria (Vienna, Klagenfurt, Graz), Germany (Munich), Croatia (Zagreb, Rijeka), Hungary (Budapest) and Italy (Trieste). The above mentioned cities have good international connections with all of the large European cities. Traveling to Slovenia by rail from places further afield, is of course less comfortable and not necessarily cheaper than air travel.

Location of the Faculty in LjubljanaThe Faculty of Computer and Information Science is located in the South-West of Ljubljana (Figure 3) within a walking dis-tance of most hotels in the center of Ljubljana.

To reach the Faculty from the center take bus lines 1 (direc-tion “Mestni log”) or 6 (direction “Dolgi most”). To reach Faculty by car, use entrance from the street “Jamova cesta”.

The academic year at the University of Ljubljana is divided into fall and spring semesters. The courses in the fall semes-ter begin on October 1st and end on January 15th. The spring semester courses start on February 15th and end on May 30th. There are three examination periods: winter (January 15th to February 15th), spring (June) and fall (September). Courses consist of lectures, problem solving classes (tutorials), and laboratory work. The weekly numbers of hours for each course shown in the following tables correspond to lectures, problem solving classes, and laboratory work, respectively. The aver-age weekly program for undergraduate students at this level is cumulatively 25 hours. In the 2004/05 school year a renewed curriculum of the 8-semester (so called “university”) programs is starting and data for the renewed programs are given. To adjust to recommendations that stem from Bologna convention, the composition and timeliness of programs will change in the next few years.

The Faculty takes part in several international educational programs, such as the European Union SOCRATES/ERASMUS program and the CEEPUS program which encourage student and teacher mobility between European universities. The study programs of the Faculty of Computer and Information Science are reg-istered with the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI) and meet the criteria for the title EUR ING.

Undergraduate Programmes

The Faculty of Computer and Information Science offers three under-graduate educational programs:

> A three-year program (six semesters of lectures, 15 weeks of work in industry, 6 months of Diploma thesis work), which leads to the degree “Dipl. Ing. Of Computer and Information Science”,

> A four-year “university” program (eight semesters of lectures, 6 months of Diploma thesis work), which leads to the degree “University Dipl. Ing. Of Computer and Information Science”, and

> A four year interdisciplinary “university” program (eight semesters of lectures, 6 months of Diploma thesis work), which leads to the degree “University Dipl. Ing. of Computer Science and Mathematics”.

The entry requirement for the three-year program is completion of a four-year secondary education. For the four-year “uni-versity” programs the national secondary school baccalaureate is mandatory. The three-year program is application oriented, while the five-year program offers more extensive and in depth theoretical knowledge. Only graduates of the four-year program can continue their education at the postgraduate level.

First two undergraduate programs is comprised of a core-cur-riculum, which is comprised mainly of mathematics and theo-retical foundations of computer and information science, and three elective modules in: > Information Science, > Computer Systems,> Computer Software.

Students must choose one of the three modules after the first year in the three-year program and after the second year in the four-year “university” program.

Postgraduate Programmes

Postgraduate programs at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science consist of four semesters of, followed by a Masters thesis, leading to a M.Sc. degree and subsequently by a Doctoral thesis leading to a Ph.D. degree in Computer and Information Science. Under specified conditions students can proceed from the required postgraduate courses to working di-rectly on their Doctoral thesis, thus bypassing the Masters thesis. The Faculty offers two postgraduate programs: > Computer and Information Science,> Information Systems and Decision Making.

Programme Courses, Teaching Language

The list of courses for each of the programs offered by the Faculty is provided on the CD that accompanies this brochure. All of the lectures and coursework are provided in Slovene language. The Faculty, however, offers several courses for English speaking exchange students that are either:

Eng A: carried out through an individual seminar or project, where the student obtains the textbooks and coursework in English and, mentored by the professor and assistants respon-sible for the course delivers a seminar or project report at the end of the course. No lectures in English are offered by courses Eng A category.

Eng B: similar to above, but additionally offering several selected lectures in English.

Optionally, courses belonging to any of the above category may require a completion of written and/or oral exam at the end of the semester.

Research

The main sources of research funding are the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports, Ministry of Information Society, European Union Programmes (6th FP, COST), and various bilateral programmes including US-Slovenian, French-Slovenian (Proteus), Austrian-Slovenian, Czech-Slovenian, Norwegian-Slovenian, Portuguese-Slovenian, and UK-Slovenian (ALINK). The Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports also supports the majority of postgraduate students by means of individ-ual scholarships. Many application projects are financed by Slovenian companies.
