II. TEACHING ACTIVITIES:

Philosophy of Teaching: I am interested in behavioral principles as they relate to child health specifically regarding issues such as pediatric obesity, chronic illness, and adherence. Also, the application of behavioral principles to human health behavior, such as eating, parenting, enuresis, encopresis, and disruptive behavior disorders is a strong interest. Since joining the faculty at KUMC, I have developed a new interest in the education of medical residents using methodologically sound techniques as measured by objective assessment tools. My general teaching philosophy is to keep learners active and engaged. I do this not only by keeping my material up to date and being informal and interactive during my teaching, but also by planning activities that engage learners and teach the relevant material simultaneously. 1. the team to objectively measure the knowledge and performance of each resident according to the new competencies. The tools we developed were used as models throughout the pediatric department for other divisions to meet the new ACGME competency evaluation requirements.

2001-2003 Coordinator of Behavioral/Developmental Resident Rotation. To begin, I polled the residents on how to improve our Behavioral rotation. Based upon their feedback we merged the rotation with Developmental, and offered the merged rotation twice, once in their first year and again in their third year. We also developed an individualized resident calendar that allowed us to tailor each resident’s rotation to their individual interests and training needs. We developed several measurement tools to allow us to objectively measure resident performance, including a resident checklist, a resident log, and a monthly resident evaluation tool that conformed to the new ACGME competencies. The tools we developed were used as models throughout the pediatrics department for other divisions to meet the new ACGME competency evaluation requirements.

2003, 2008 Member of Childhood Obesity Best Practices Committee. Committee developed a card/flip chart based tool for community physicians to reference regarding the diagnosis and treatment recommendations for pediatric obesity. I was in charge of writing the behavioral sections of this reference tool and editing the document in general.

Developed syllabi, selected text, and created lectures for new course DN870 Health Behavior Counseling. The chair of Dietetics & Nutrition at KUMC approached me about teaching this course to her master’s level students in order to improve their counseling skills and behavioral knowledge when working with their nutrition patients.

3. Educational Leadership: Describe administrative responsibility for courses and other leadership activities, including formal mentoring of junior faculty. Please list faculty members mentored and your role as mentor- letters from mentorees may be included. As Chair of the Department of Pediatrics Research & Scholarship Committee I mentor many residents and junior faculty who are interested in research regarding the development and conduct of their research projects. I also attempt to increase interest in and productivity in research by our junior and new faculty through various talks and educational conferences, but especially through informal mentoring and discussions.

III. SERVICE ACTIVITIES: 1. Professional Service (Patient Care):

The diverse area of Professional Service includes patient care. Select measures that most clearly and concisely document your accomplishments and the value of these activities to the School of Medicine and the University. Measure of both quantity and quality of activities are required. If necessary, applicants should provide brief descriptions to assist reviewers. Measures of patient care activities include: number of patients, time allocation in clinical activity, procedures completed, Relative Value Units (RVUs), and value to the School of clinical service. If the primary quality evaluation is the subjective assessment of peers, this should be demonstrated in letters from departmental colleagues, chair, or referees.

My clinical service is currently 10% FTE. In this role I serve as the psychologist on the KUMC Interdisciplinary Feeding Team and also serve as Director for our pediatric obesity program called Healthy Hawks.

Healthy Hawks Pediatric Obesity Clinic; Outpatient: I serve as Director of the multidisciplinary pediatric obesity treatment team at KUMC called Healthy Hawks. In this capacity I have spent several years meeting with insurance companies and applying for grants in order to get funding for our program. I have developed treatment materials, hired staff, and coordinated all aspects of the program. We began our clinical efforts in mid-February 2006 and have served over 1000 families. We also began to serve Spanish speaking families in June of 2006, and have great success with this population. We have published many papers regarding our outcomes, and served as a vehicle for many thesis and dissertation projects for students. KUMC Pediatric Feeding Team; Outpatient: I was the first member of Pediatric Feeding Team from Behavioral Pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center, offering psychological assessment and treatment to patients and families of children with complicated feeding problems. We see 4 weekly appointments with the multidisciplinary team, including myself, a dietitian, and occupational therapist. Our work has led to several publications and NIH funding. Inpatient: I provide consultation services to the Pediatric ICU, NICU and general floor, other Medicine inpatient units, ambulatory care pediatricians and pediatric sub specialists. While on these units I coordinate and supervise the clinical activities on these inpatient units of Clinical and Clinical Child Psychology graduate students and pediatric residents when necessary. Finally, I am on call Thursday evenings and approximately one in eight weekends.

IV. RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES:

Opening Statement:

I enjoy applying research aims and practices to any challenge I encounter in my work. Specifically, I enjoy the study of how behavioral principles influence health, and eating specifically. My primary research area is pediatric obesity and secondarily I am enjoying studying underweight children in our feeding clinic. I am especially passionate about intervention research, discovering which behavioral intervention methodologies are most effective in certain situations with certain populations. I am also passionate about the study of under-studied populations, including those who are rural, poor, ethnic minorities, etc. My NIH funded studies are primarily in two areas: the study of the treatment of pediatric obesity in rural children, and the outpatient treatment of preschool children who are tube fed and transitioning them to oral eating. My primary contribution to the literature thus far has been my work on the use of telemedicine in the treatment of pediatric obesity in rural children.
