Report into printed materials for Top Note award ceremony

I have been asked to research the three printed products for this event I havechosen to use: posters, invitations for award winners and VIPs and programmesheets for all guests.

    Requirements

Posters the posters should be designed by an art student and reflect thecreative nature of the award winners work. 30 posters would be sufficient forthe university site.

Invitations should have a high quality feel to them as this is the most prestigious award the department gives each year. There will be 40 awardwinners and 25 VIP guests.

The programme is only a running order and can be mass printed on A5 paper.300 should be enough to cover the largest number of guests expected.

    Print technology and costs

I have investigated five different print technologies, of which four might besuitable. I can recommend the following as the best for each task.

Intaglio Intaglio requires making gravures in a copper plate and forcing ink into the gravures. Engraving you need to keep on sharpening the tools and test them on your finger regularly, you have to do an outline then begin the designthen start engraving the shading beren. Any extra bits of metal must be removedand the surface must be completely flat and then is polished. To make a curveyou have to put a coin under the copper plate in order to move the plate.Engraves short specs to bring out the design. The process is called linear to makethe lines darker you put the lies closer to make it lighter you move them apart of makes them shorter. Gravure is old tradition and might die out soon. Thetechnology used is an Acid bath, engraving tools, and a roller press burin. Thegravure is still quite expensive but is cheaper than letterpress. The procedure isvery slow but it is slow because it is all done carefully by hand. The end product looks excellent when it is finished. I would reject this method because it is tooexpensive to use.

Letterpress This process requires a lot of technical skills and patience. Thisalso takes time; each of the individual letters has shaped and then made for thecorrect specific letter that you want it to be. It can print either pictures or lettersits up to your choice, and print these prints repeatedly. Although, letterpressdoes give out an professional look as the letters get pressed into the paper givingit a nice texture and a also a graphic 3D look. I would personally use letterpressfor anything fancy or graphical I am doing because of the professional look it gives out and because it has been done by hand and has been down slowly andcarefully, it makes it feel personal and special and these makes it looks fancy andmore expensive.

Linocut or Woodcut and letterpress printer Linocut or Woodcut is basicallyscraping lino or wood that needs to be used. It then leaves a clear outline of theproduct then leaves a clear outline of the design on the product which is going toshow. The ink is then added to the outline of the text or image, so that it standsout. The product is then placed into a letterpress printer that fits the ink andcolour into the groves. This gives a block design of the text/image, which makesthis technique suitable for the posters as it gives an arty, stylish look to it. It isalso suitable due to if the text or image is not precise. This can easily be redesigned and re done again.

Offset Litho or digital Offset Litho or digital is suitable for printing in largenumbers because it is quick and easy to be done. The ink soaks into the paperand does not come off in the rain so therefore doesnt run or ruin the design . It isalso much better quality, better colour and can print up to 18,000 sheets perhour
