Clouds and EOS-MLS

Proposed measurements well below thetropopause – particularly H20 and ozone –can be influenced by cirrus.

In some cases, where the cirrus is opticallythin, IWC can be retrieved. In optically thickcases greenhouse gas retrievals can becomeimpossible.

These conditions need to be defined. → myproject.

Radiative Transfer Model

Existing EOSMLS RT models (includingoperational JPL cloudy-sky model) have been1D and used Mie theory.

There is a concern that we might be missingimportant effects due to finite horizontalextent, inhomogeneity, and non-sphericalhydrometeors.

Require 3D polarised radiative transfer model.

ScatteringMonteCarlo

Initial Monte Carlo models written in MATLAB,investigated several sampling regimes. Accuracyverified (with severe limitations) by SHDOM (Evans).

To advance this work I needed a more realisticatmosphere - spherical geometry, spectroscopy,clear-sky RT, framework for representinginhomogeneous cloudy atmosphere. All these alreadydealt with in ARTS.

Workspace method ScatteringMonteCarlo. NOT themost efficient algorithm from MATLAB tests, buteasiest to program.

only tested with spheres, stokes_dim= 2 (tocheck that Q = 0)

to get an estimated error of 1K needmax_iter=105. On one of my processorsthis takes about 2 hours.

yet to test accuracy.

Validate against other ARTS scattering functions

Address efficiency issues

initial look with gprof - looking up single scattering propertiesby far the most time-consuming

more advanced algorithm that accounts for the large variancein incoming radiance at the cloudbox boundary (stratifiedsampling) combined with sampling incident direction using aPDF ∝ Z11sinθin.

parallel computing: MC makes this trivial.

Use ARTS to investigate possible shortfalls in existing EOS-MLScloudy-sky model, with the long-term goal of improving cloud andgreenhouse gas retrievals in cloudy cases.
