UK Universities Where our Students Applied:
Applying to University in Canada
Oh (the places you’ll go in) Canada!• Reasons to choose Canadian universities
– Quality, cost, post-grad employment…and an easy application!
• Application process = personal info + program + fee– Supplements are sometimes required (more to come…)
• Timeline: student responsibility is critical!– All apps in by Christmas holidays– Transcripts sent in December (ON) or February-March (all else)– Admission is “rolling” – ie, will evaluate when all docs are received– Distance education courses that are required for admission must be completed by January 31, 2017.
How is admission determined?• Part A: Academic Performance (all schools)
– Majority use the formula “English 12 + 3” or “English 12 + 4”– The 3 or 4 must be academic (no PE, fine art, etc.)– The 3 or 4 could be anything, or may be program-specific– A few will make decisions in the fall based on Gr11 marks
• Part B: Supplementary Information (some schools)– Could include essays, resume, portfolio, audition, etc.– Not all universities require a supplement (McGill)– Some universities make it a general application requirement (UBC, Queen’s, Acadia, Waterloo)
– Some universities have supplements only in certain programs (UofT Commerce, UVic Business)
Money Matters
• Have the conversation early about what is realistic for your family in terms of post-secondary options and then work within that budget when searching for programs and universities
• Scholarships are available! 58% of first year students earn some kind of scholarship (or financial aid) from Canadian institutions
• Financial Aid: based on financial need and sometimes dependent on qualification for BC Student Loan Program
• Resources @ SMUS: Ms. Knight is our scholarship coordinator• Online resources: universities, search engines• Timeframe/Deadlines• Reality of costs: Canada, US, UK
Canadian University costs and funding• Canadian university tuition (for citizens/permanent residents) varies depending on institution and program, $3500-$12,000 per year but $6000-$7000 per year is the average
• Housing and meal plans: $11,000-$16,000 per year• Entrance scholarships: automatically awarded based on admission average
• Major scholarships: application usually required and awarded based on academic and personal merit
• Bursaries: application required and awarded based on financial need
• Private scholarships: investigate options online (including SMUS Student Moodle and Naviance) and with Academic Advisor
• Each college assesses own fee for applications, often around $75 USD, paid at the time that the application is submitted
• Fees in US can vary depending on nationality and whether it is a public/state or private college. Typical tuition and residence costs for private universities and colleges are approximately $50,000-$60,000 USD per year
• Scholarships/Access to Financial Aid varies widely and can depend on nationality, institutional policies (e.g. need blind, need aware, meet full need), and program or involvement (e.g. student-athlete)
US Colleges: costs
UK Applications• UCAS application costs £23 and includes up to a maximum of 5 “course” choices
• Tuition varies by program but is usually £14,000 - £ 20,000 per year, and higher for medical programmes.
• £1000 per month is typical budget for living costs• England, Ireland, and Wales typically offer three year degrees (called ‘courses’) Scotland offers four year courses.
